It is commonly seen that students take pictures of teachers' blackboard-writing using their smart phones. This starts a discussion on whether taking a picture can take the place of taking notes.
Among those in the photo-taking camp, some can’t read their own handwriting. So it's best to take a picture of teachers' writing so that they can understand the notes. Some take pictures of notes because they know the phone is a safe place to store materials. They may lose paper, but they may not lose their phones. Some take photos because they want to record exact words that have been written on the blackboard.
It may be convenient to use phones as note takers, but is a picture a replacement(替代品) for the process of note-taking? Can the two be equally effective?
Taking. notes may be an old-fashioned method, but a method which has a long history doesn't mean it* s out of date. Taking notes is a traditional way to help make preparations for getting and understanding information. Teachers encourage students to take notes because the act of doing so is more than only recording necessary information — it requires students to ask questions about what they don't know. The act of writing information down forces the brain to begin to memorize, establishing the building blocks of learning something new.
I' m not sure which is better. For now, I allow students to take notes however they see fit ——handwritten or photographed — because I think that some notes, no matter the method of note-taking, are better than none.

Critical thinking isn't about thinking more or thinking harder, but about thinking better. Training your critical thinking skills can open up a door to a better world. But the journey of being a person with critical thinking is difficult. It requires a lot of hard work and practice.
Train your questioning skills.
Asking questions is perhaps the key act of critical thinking. If you don't know what questions to ask, or don't ask the questions in the first place, you may as well not get the answer. Finding the answer is what critical thinking is all about.
Think several steps ahead.
Don't just think one or two steps ahead. Think several. Imagine you're a chess grandmaster who's fighting with someone with the ability to think several steps ahead. You have to match intelligence with him. Once the problem you are working on may begin, use your imagination to guess what the possible futures will be.
Spare at least 30 minutes a day to improve your brain function.
Spend 30 minutes in your busy day making your brain more powerful. There are a few ways that you can do this:
●Try to be active in finding the solution to a problem a day. It could be a theoretical or a personal one.
●Find the time to exercise regularly. 30minutes of exercise— as little as a walk around the neighborhood——can help improve brain function.
●Eat the right kinds of foods. Avocados, blueberries, wild salmon, nuts and seeds, as well as brown rice play an important role in keeping your brain healthy.
As long as you keep practicing, you can improve your critical thinking a lot.

I was happy in those days before I started going to school. Because I had good neighbors to play with. I played with them from morning to evening. We played games outdoors, dressed up as cowboys and rode around on our tricycles(三轮车) happily.
At the age of five, I had to go to kindergarten(幼儿园) and it was quite hard for me at first. I felt very sad about having to leave my mother each morning. I cried and wanted my mother around. As the days went by ,however, I made friends easily in my class. I became happy again and looked forward to leaving my house each morning。
I still remember those days when I was learning to ride a bicycle. I fell several times but I never gave up。Finally, I was able to join my friends riding around on my bike.
Another memory I like is the end-of-year concert held at the kindergarten. I was chosen to play the role of Jack in the play, Jack and the Magic Beans. I became the superstar that night and received praise for my performance.
What a wonderful childhood I had! At times I really wish I could go back to those days.

Everyone wants to find happiness. But sometimes looking for happiness can be as hard as looking for lost treasure. Just when you think you nearly reach it, something unexpected happens. This may trouble you a lot. Here are some tips for helping you find happiness.
● Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. If you depend on one thing or one person to make you happy, it may be impossible. You need to have larger circle of friends.
● Follow your heart. When we go against our own thoughts, we usually feel sad. Follow your strong feeling and let it guide you to people and things that will improve your life. Day by day, you will be happier than before.
● Organize your ideas. Many people push away happiness when they think too much. Don’t keep everything in head. Try making a list of lot of things that don’t seem too big to manage on your own. You may find the list isn’t as long as you thought. You can do most of the things by yourself.
● Look at your life as a whole. Most of the things that stop us from feeling happy are just some little things. Remember life is always going on and whatever the little thing is, it will finally end.
Happiness can be hard to feel at times, so don’t think there is something wrong with you if you don’t feel it. The ways above will help you to feel more of it.

According to the traditional Chinese customs, 2019 is the year of Pig, ranking as the twelfth animal in the Chinese zodiac---the Shengxiao. Many people believe that pigs are naturally fat, lazy and dirty. But are any of those things true?

China and Western countries may have different cultural beliefs about certain animals, but when it comes to pigs, they agree that pigs are ugly, lazy, stupid and shameless.
Just look at the idioms and phrases in our languages. In Chinese, we have the expressions of “Boiling a dead pig”, and “A pig looking in the mirror is still a pig". And in English, there are expressions such as “eating like a pig” and “sweating like a pig”. If you search on the Internet for the word “pig”, you will find more idioms. Here is another example. When old people have a dream to get to the top of Qomolangma, other people will laugh at them and say, “Pigs might fly.”
None of these expressions are exactly complimentary (称赞的).
But the truth is that pigs do have some good qualities. And there’s probably no better time to clear their names than now during the Year of the Pig.
First of all, science proved that pigs aren’t stupid at all. According to a passage, pigs are similar to dogs and chimpanzees. They like to play. They have good long-term memories. And they know the difference between those who treat them well and those who don't.
There are lovable pig characters in cartoons, too. Peppa pig, for example, a UK cartoon has become one of the most popular cartoons in 180 countries and regions. It has attracted wide attention. In the cartoon’s pig family, they teach children about love, friendship, and the importance of family. And in China, McDull, a piglet (小猪崽 ) works hard toward his dreams even though he is in the face of quite a few failures. McDull is slow and patient, and not afraid of repeated failures. He has a heart of gold.
Perhaps these are the qualities of pigs to keep in mind when we celebrate this Chinese New Year - their intelligence, cuteness, patience and innocence (纯真).

The concept of homeschooling is not a new one. Homeschooling means educating children at home instead of sending them to public or private schools. Nowadays, homeschooling has become popular in the USA for a lot of reasons. One of them is poor quality of education in public schools and it’s also because of the high cost in private schools. Some parents believe that because they know their child’s strengths and weaknesses, they can teach him or her better. Some parents prefer homeschooling so as to prevent their children from getting into bad company. There is another group of people who choose to educate their children at home because they want them to learn their religious beliefs. They also think that homeschooling would help in development of strong family bonds (家庭纽带).
However, there are some negative influences of homeschooling on students as well as parents.
Homeschooling is a full-time job and not fit for parents who have their own careers. It takes a lot of time for parents’ side to make homeschooling a success. Other family members’ responsibilities may also be affected. They may give their full attention to the needs of their children. Besides, a parent may have high educational qualifications, but that does not make him or her a good teacher. Teaching is an art, which requires the ability to understand the needs of the children. It may be difficult for the parents to explain the concepts to their children.
In today’s world, competition is seen in every field, and school prepares children to face these competitions. However, homeschooling does not give the children a chance to compare with other kids. They will also not be aware of where they stand in educational position among their classmates. This may affect their lives. Education is not the only thing that the children need to become successful human beings. It is necessary that they learn to communicate in the society, and public school provides them with such an environment, where they meet many people. Schools also provide children with a chance to take part in different activities to improve their overall development.
It is true that it has many advantages, but one must get to know that school teaches children skills to survive.

Sue and Jim were neighbours for five years but they were never interested in each other. Then one day, Sue saw Jim’s music collection. She noticed a rare punk rock CD that she also owned. At that moment, she realized that they both had the same interest in music and they started talking. Sue said, “I thought we had nothing in common(相同)until I saw his CD by the New York Dolls.” They are now married and living with each other.
Some psychologists (心理学家) think that your taste in music is related to (有联系的) your personality. As part of a test at the University of Texas, Austin, USA, volunteers created a CD of their favourite songs. The volunteers then listened to each other’s CDs and made guesses about the CD creator’s personality—outgoing, adventurous, happy, and so on. These strangers correctly guessed much more about each others’ personalities through their CDs than through their clothes or taste in films. For example, Sue and Jim love punk music, which means they have outgoing personalities.
The psychologists who did the test found Snoop Dogg (hip-hop) fans are likely to be energetic and talkative. People who like U2 (rock/pop music) are generally independent and adventurous.
The psychologists also found that Louis Armstrong(jazz) fans tend to(倾向于) be serious and intelligent While fans of classical music are also likely to enjoy jazz music and tend to be shy.The psychologists were surprised to find that rap and heavy metal fans were also shier and quieter than many other music lovers.
