As a boy, Robert Ballard liked to read about wrecks (沉船) . He read a lot about the Titanic. “My lifelong dream was to find this great ship,” he once said.

On September 1, 1985, Ballard’s dream came true. He found the wreck of the Titanic. The ship was in two main parts lying about four kilometers under the sea. Using a video camera(摄像机), Ballard looked around the ship.

In 1986, Ballard visited the Titanic again. This time, he got to see the inside of the ship and took a lot of photos with the help of underwater cameras. When other people saw the photos, they wanted to visit the ship, too.

When Ballard returned in 2004, he found the Titanic in a very bad state. Other people had taken away about 6,000 things from the ship. Some even took pieces of the ship. Some people think the Titanic should be moved to a museum, but Ballard doesn't agree. “The deep sea is the earth’s largest museum,” he says. He thinks people should make where the Titanic lies a historic site (历史遗迹).
