When you walk into a room on the 17th floor of Copenhagen’s Bella Sky Hotel, you’ll be greeted by soft roses and other fresh flowers, fruits, fashion magazines, and a bathroom with beauty products. This is Europe’s first hotel floor dedicated(专用的)entirely to women—and according to the hotel’s CEO Arne Bang Mikkelsen, it is designed by women, for women.
“Women’s hotel preferences(偏爱)are very different from men’s with key priorities(优先考虑的事)being to feel safe and comfortable. When men come into a hotel room, the first thing they do is check the view, turn on the TV, plug in their computer, and check out the fridge. Women, on the other hand, go straight to the bathroom. Does it smell nice? Is it clean? Does it have a nice bathtub and shower?”
Unlike other hotels, it seemed like someone actually thought about what women wanted. To get it right, the hotel asked a number of women what they wanted, and added to their list of things like cleanliness, a nice bathroom, high-powered hairdryers, steam irons, cosmetic mirrors, healthy choices on the room service menus, and full-body mirrors.
It seems that they are helped by the boom(繁荣)in female business travelers. Global numbers are hard to get, but a research report shows women account for about half of all business travelers in the US in 2010, up from approximately 25% in 1991.
Places like the Naumi Hotel in Singapore, the Premier Hotel in New York, the London Dukes Hotel and the Georgian Court Hotel in Vancouver seem to be realizing the possibility in catering(迎合)for women.
At the London Dukes Hotel, the manager says bookings(预订)for their “Duchess Rooms”,which are standard rooms with fresh flowers, fruit, and styling things, have increased 25% over the past year.

When Ron first started with his organization, he loved his job. He went into work every day filled with purpose and passion (热情). Three years later, however, it was hard to recognize him. Now, Ron detests going to work. He feels that his work is meaningless, he’s always stressed, and he calls in sick frequently.
These are basic symptoms (征兆) of burnout. If you’ve experienced this yourself, it’s important that you should know how to recover from it before you have difficulty in having a sense of satisfaction and then dislike your job.
You first need to know why you’ve experienced burnout. First, look at any resentment (愤怒) that you feel towards your work. Often, feelings of resentment point to something important that is missing.
Here’s a good example. Jennifer manages a team around the world, so her workday often starts at 6 a.m. She doesn’t mind this because she likes her team and her job. But she feels resentful when her boss forgets that she starts work so early and repeatedly asks her to stay late, which causes her to miss important time with her family.
In this example, burnout wouldn’t happen if Jennifer disliked her job; in fact, she loves what she does. She experiences burnout because she hates missing out on family time in the evenings.
Take time to think about any negative feelings that you have about your role, and try to get to the root of the problem. Once you’ve known the cause of your burnout, write down at least one way that you can manage that source of stress. This might include giving some of your duties to others, working from home one day a week, or even changing roles.
1.Which of the following is closest in meaning to “detests” in Paragraph 1?
A. Minds. B. Hates.
C. Avoids. D. Misses.
2.What does the author say about burnout?
A. It has a bad influence on one’s job.
B. It causes serious health problems.
C. Its cause is unclear.
D. It lasts a short time.
3.What causes Jennifer’s burnout at work?
A. That she works too hard.
B. That she doesn’t like her job.
C. That her boss is too strict with her.
D. That she can’t make time for her family.
4.What does the author advise people to do in the last paragraph?
A. Try to keep great passion at work.
B. Change the role you play in your work.
C. Find out the cause of burnout and solve it.
D. Consider negative feelings as something unimportant.

In most situations, light helps us see. But when it comes to looking at the night sky, light is actually a kind of pollution. It prevents our view of some of life’s most striking sights: stars, planets, and even galaxies.
“When I was a little boy, I loved the night sky. I remember looking up and the sky was filled with stars. I became an astronomer because I was amazed by their beauty,” says Robert gent, “Now in most big cities kids can’t see the stars like I did.”
Normally, about 2,500 individual stars are visible to the naked eye without using any special equipment. But because of light pollution, you actually see just 200 to 300 and fewer than a dozen from some cities. Only one in three Americans can see our own galaxy (星系) with the naked eye. Those people live far away from the lights of big cities, office building, and shopping malls.
Fortunately, there’s an inexpensive and useful way. If we shine lights down at the ground instead of up into the sky, and use lower brightness levels, we can save big amounts of energy and keep the beauty of the night skies. Many cities and towns have passed laws limiting lights at night, making sure enough shine for safety without creating much light pollution.
Light pollution affects more than our view of the heavens and can harm wildlife. Migrating (迁移) birds sometimes fly over cities and become confused by the brightness, flying in circles until they drop from exhaustion. Sea turtles need dark beaches for nesting and won’t approach bright lights. Too much light at night may even affect human health. For all these reasons, researchers are working on ways to use light only when and where they are truly needed. Everyone deserves to look up at the sky.
1.According to the text, using our naked eyes, ______________.
A.people in remote areas can see more stars than those in big cities |
B.over one third Americans can see our own galaxy |
C.about one in three Americans in big cities can see our own galaxy |
D.Americans can only see 200 to 300 stars |
2.Many cities and towns have passed laws limiting lights at night mainly to _________.
A.save the electricity | B.make sure of cities’ safety |
C.let you count the number of stars | D.avoid much light pollution |
3.In how many ways will the light pollution do harm?
A.One | B.Two | C.Three | D.Four |
4.The underlined word “exhaustion” in the last paragraph means “_________”.
A.air pollution | B.tiredness | C.breath | D.brightness |

An Israeli law banning too skinny models went into effect with the start of 2013. The law, approved last March in Israel, requires models to prove they have maintained a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 18.5 for three months before a fashion show. That means a woman who is 5'8''tall can weigh no less than 119 pounds.
“This law is another step in the war against eating disorders,” said physician Adatto. “Underweight models,” he explained, “can no longer serve as role models for innocent young people who copy their false image of being skinny.”
But some critics in this country say it is misguided, focusing on weight instead of health. They also say the Israeli ban is bound to fail because of the strong power of the fashion industry. “I think it’s an approach that isn’t going to work.” Said eating disorder expert Susan Ice, who worked with an organization which creates a healthy working environment for models.
But Adatto told the reporter that he began to concern the issue after meeting an ambitious model who looked like she needed to be hospitalized. He said. “I realized that only legislation can change the situation. There was no time to waste, so many girls were dieting to death.”
However, the efforts to regulate models’ weight in Spain and Italy have not resulted in significant changes in part because of difficulties in determining reliable methods of measuring weight and health.
Still, folks including Ice say there’s no denying that images from Hollywood and the fashion industry can be difficult for young women to deal with. “Certainly I don't believe the modeling industry has caused the rise in eating disorders, but it makes it harder,” she says. “It’s a difficult recovery environment, worshiping thinness as the beauty ideal.”
1.What does BMI in the first paragraph refer to?
A.A measure of body health based on height and weight.
B.A worldwide prize for the healthiest model.
C.A new show held by those skinny models.
D.A kind of medicine to cure eating disorders.
2.One benefit the new Israeli law may bring is __.
A.to change the working conditions of models
B.to lower the chance of skinny models’death
C.to provide guidance for women worshiping thinness
D.to prevent models from suffering from eating disorders
3.In the opinion of the critics, the law won’t succeed because______.
A.it misleads young women to form a bad eating habit.
B.it doesn’t provide a proper approach that can work well.
C.it doesn’t create a healthy working environment for models.
D.the fashion industry is much too influential.
4.According to the passage, the new Israeli law banning skinny models is__.
A.practical B.arguable C.acceptable D.reasonable

Ireland has had a very difficult history. The problems started in the 16th century when English rulers tried to conquer (征服) Ireland. For hundreds of years, the Irish people fought against the English. Finally, in 1921, the British government was forced to give independence to the south of Ireland. The result is that today there are two "Irelands". Northern Ireland, in the north, is part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland, in the south, is an independent country.
In the 1840s, the main crop, potatoes, was affected by disease and about 750,000 people died of hunger. This, and a shortage (短缺) of work, forced many people to leave Ireland and live in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada. As a result of these problems, the population fell from 8.2 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851.
For many years, the majority of Irish people earned their living as farmers. Today, many people still work on the land but more and more people are moving to the cities to work in factories and offices. Life in the cities is very different from life in the countryside, where things move at a quieter and slower pace.
The Irish are famous for being warm-hearted and friendly. Oscar Wilde, a famous Irish writer, once said that the Irish were “the greatest talkers since the Greeks”. Since independence, Ireland has revived (复兴) its own culture of music, language, literature and singing. Different areas have different styles of old Irish songs which are sung without instruments. Other kinds of Irish music use many different instruments such as the violin, whistles, etc.
1.What does the author tell us in paragraph 1?
A. how the Irish fought against the English.

B. people are moving to the cities for lack of work in the countryside
C. it is harder to make a living as a farmer than as a factory worker
D. different kinds of old Irish songs are all sung with instruments
