By the time a student starts to apply (申请) for a US university, much of his or her record, including grades and after-school activities, has been set in stone. For this reason, the student must in his or her first year of high school start getting ready for college. He or she also has to decide on the non-academic (非学业的) tasks, which are important to improve the student’s chances of getting in.
1. After-school activities
When it comes to high school activities, quality is better than quantity (数量). Admissions (录取) officers do not want to see a student who has joined dozens of organizations (组织) for a short period of time.
Many students try to do this towards the end of their high school. But schools want to see a student who has been with one organization for all or most of high school. A student who can do this shows maturity (成熟). It is the quality that admissions officers look for as it is one of the markers of future success.
2. Leadership
Schools want to see a student who has taken on a leadership role in an organization. A student can show leadership by taking on any role that needs extra commitment (奉献) and responsibility.
If you do not have a great title (头衔) such as president, be sure to explain any leadership roles you have taken. This kind of involvement (参与) in school activities shows you are the responsible person that admissions officers look for.
3. Consistency (一致性)
Admissions officers like an application (申请) to be consistent. For example if there is a high school activity you particularly (特别地) love, it would help if that activity matches your future academic and career interest.
Of course not everything needs to be consistent. Otherwise (否则) the student would be narrow and this is not what schools are looking for. However, you cannot have different parts of your application saying conflicting (矛盾的) things.

Many students have already chosen whether or not to apply for Early Decision (ED). The official deadline for most colleges and universities with an ED application is Nov 1st at 11:59 p.m.
Early Decision has risks. 1.However, ED comes with some nice perks (好处).The two biggest advantages are:
1.Early notification (通知). Students apply early and are notified early - usually by December 15.
2.A boost (提高)in acceptance. With just a little bit of research, you can find out the acceptance rate for students who apply normally and those who apply through ED. You might be surprised.2.
What questions do you need to ask before you make the ED choice?
First, consider academic fit. Are you satisfied with the amount of research you've done to make a four-year commitment (承诺)to this school? Have you spent enough time on die college's website to understand the academic offerings?3.Do you think you'd struggle to keep up with the other students in class?
4.Are you sure you'll like the climate? Is it the right size (not too big, not too small)? Is the emphasis on sports, arts, culture, etc. right for you? Do you like the surrounding area? Is it enough to keep you entertained, or is it too overwhelming (难应付的)?
5.If you apply for Early Decision and are accepted, will you be able to attend if you are not offered any financial aid? If the answer is "no" then you probably should reconsider applying through ED, because you will need to withdraw (撤回)your other applications if you are accepted.
A.Look at the social fit, too.
B.Also look at your finances.
C.Turn to your teachers for advice, too.
D.Do you think you're competitive academically?
E.Are you sure you can adapt to the new surroundings?
F.ED acceptance rates at some schools can be twice as high as the regular acceptance rates.
G.It means the student has agreed that if he or she is accepted to a school, he or she must attend it.

For many of us, the real stress begins when a test actually starts. Here are some important ways to manage the stress and do your best on an exam.
Show up on time. Get the test off to the best possible start by getting there on time. 1.. However, arriving too early could give you time to sit there and worry about things.
Stay focused and relaxed. Focused and relaxed? Does that sound impossible? Well, what we mean is this: keep your mind on the test, but don’t tighten up. 2.. If you feel so nervous that you are afraid you might actually snap your pencil in your hand, try that deep-breathing thing for a moment. Then get right back to the test questions.
3.. Don’t worry if you still have some stress while you begin the test. Almost everyone feels this because you want to do your best and get a good grade. The key is to accept it and not let worrying about the stress make you even more stressed.
Read the directions. Take a minute to read the test instructions before you get started. 4.. And you won’t have to waste time going back and redoing any work because you don’t understand the directions.
And finally --- one more important thing. Once the test is over, try not to think about it for a while. Instead of worrying about what grade you might get, reward yourself for making it through the test. Hang out with your friends, or spend an afternoon doing something that makes you happy.5.. And more tests will come along soon. So just enjoy the fact that you’re finished with one!
A. Expect and accept a little bit of stress.
B. You can’t do anything to change your grade now.
C. This will keep you from making simple mistakes.
D. Know ahead of time how many questions there are.
E. Arriving late might make you feel rushed and nervous.
F. After all, you don’t want to spend ten minutes on a super-hard question.
G. Try to stay loose and cool so that you can move through the questions one by one.
