When it comes to film, people usually favor good over evil, focus on the main characters and ignore the supporting characters. But when it comes to the Minions (小黄人), these conventions go right out of the window.
Originally comedic background characters in the Despicable Me series, these yellow pill-shaped screwballs(怪人) have totally stolen the show.
This summer the characters appeared in their own self-titled movie in theaters abroad, having the second biggest opening weekend of all time for an animated film, according to USA Today. Recently, McDonald’s has been including Minion toys with kids’ meals in some regions, causing loyal fans to go to the restaurant to collect them all. Related video games, clothing, toys and other merchandise are sweeping the world.
The movie’s huge popularity even surprised its writers. “We never knew the Minions were going to be so popular. It just became a force of nature,” the film’s co-writer, Cinco Paul, told the Los Angeles Times.
So, what makes the banana-loving Minions a big hit? For many, the most attractive is obviously their cuteness. Their simple, graphic (图形的) nature can easily transcend cultures and age groups. “Even children can draw them”, Los Angeles Times reporter, Rebecca Keegan, wrote.
But there’s more than just cuteness. US entertainment website, HitFix, explains that their way of communicating makes the creatures infectious (有感染力的) as well. They largely speak in nonsense words. But it seems everyone can understand them through their exaggerated movements and expressions.
They desire nothing more than to serve their most despicable master, Felonious Gru. And this evil characteristic strikes a chord (引起共鸣) with humans.
“Perhaps we love Minions because they remind us of ourselves,” Huffington Post associate Web editor, Sara Boboltz, wrote.
1.What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A. People usually like the supporting players instead of the main characters.
B. People like the Minions who are the supporting players in the movie.
C. The Minions are the main characters in the film, Despicable Me.
D. People prefer the main characters to the Minions in Despicable Me.
2.What has McDonald’s done to attract customers?
A. It has made its food look like Minions.
B. It has made Minion video games to show to customers.
C. It is giving some Minion clothes to customers as gifts.
D. It is offering Minion toys to attract fans.
3.Which of the following is NOT the reason why the Minions are so popular?
A. Their cuteness.
B. Their exaggerated movements and expressions.
C. Their way of communicating.
D. Their bad behavior.
4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. HitFix explains that Minions gained popularity by striking a chord with humans.
B. While Minions can’t be understood sometimes, their way of communicating is infectious.
C. Minions are eager to take on whatever task their despicable master gives them.
D. The opening weekend of Minions was the second biggest of all time.

If you've ever seen a James Bond movie, you'll know that the hero gets around in a smart Aston Martin car. Even if you know full well that you could never afford such an expensive vehicle, you don't forget the name, or the car.
Why? You have been affected by product placement.
Companies pay a film to place their products in the movie. Product placement took off in the West in the 1980s and is now catching on in China. Two Hunan Satellite TV dramas are recent examples:Ugly Wudi and Let's Go Watch the Meteor Shower (《一起去看流星雨》).
Shampoo, mobile phones, cars and fitness centers – anything can be product-placed. Advertisers value the mass appeal of the movies, knowing that a successful film can showcase their goods to hundreds of thousands of viewers. But when product placement takes over, artistic considerations can take a back seat.
Cai Zhiyong has been product-placing for years. The Beijing-based advertiser admits there is a conflict between art and business. He explains the way one ad works. In If You are the One (《非诚勿扰》), the actress Shu Qi plays a flight attendant. The movie contains product placement for airline companies.
Cash-strapped filmmakers often have to give less consideration to the quality of their work because they need money from advertisers. In the original story for Meteor Shower, the heroine's mother owned an ice cream shop. But no ice cream company wanted to sponsor (赞助) the film. For this reason, the story was changed. In the film the man drinks 20 cups of milk tea instead of eating ice cream.
So you may see the power of business over the movies, since the script (剧本) was perhaps written so that a product could be placed-whether it was ice cream or milk tea.
1. James Bond movies are mentioned in the first paragraph to show_________.
A. how popular James Bond is B. how great the Aston Martin car is
C. how to make a movie more artistic D. how effectively product placement works
2.Product placement can have a bad effect on the_________ of a movie.
A. atmosphere B. mass appeal C. box-office success D. artistic value
3.What does the underlined word "cash-strapped" in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Short of money. B. Wasting a lot of money.
C. having enough money. D. Trying to save money.
4.We can learn from the example of Meteor Shower that__________.
A. business has a big say in the movie
B. the original story was not suitable for a movie
C. filmmakers are only concerned about making money

Most heroes are not super. They don’t appear in comic books, on television, or in movies. They just do what they believe needs to be done to make their world a better place. Bike Batman is one of them. Bike Batman is a 30-year-old married engineer who lives in Seattle, Washington. He’s a cyclist who also buys and sells bikes as a hobby.
About three years ago, he was looking for a bike for his wife. He found one on Craigslist, a website where people list things they want to sell. As he often does, he also looked at Bike Index, a popular website that allows users to register (登记) their bikes and post reports when they’re taken. The bike, which he was considering buying, clearly matched one reported stolen on Bike Index. Then he called the person who claimed (声称) to be the bike’s owner and arranged (安排) to meet him — supposedly to complete the sale. When the two men met, Bike Batman told the thief, “You’ve got two options. You can wait until a police officer gets here, or you can just get out of here.” You can imagine what the thief did.
After that first success, Bike Batman developed safer steps. When he sees questionable bike ads on Craigslist, he compares the bikes with those reported on Bike Index. Once he has made sure about it with the owner, he arranges a meet-up with the thief and will call the Seattle police department so that officers can take part in the action. In more than half of the 22 cases in which he has got back and returned bikes, the thieves have been arrested (逮捕).
His nickname came from a discussion with a police officer who suggested he be called “Robin Hood”. Since he wasn’t exactly stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, “Batman” seemed a better fit. The idea of a superhero punishing criminals feels pretty silly to him, but the main reason he continues his work is to keep up Seattle’s reputation (名誉) as a friendly city.
1.What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To explain what is a superhero.
B.To introduce a hero in Seattle.
C.To encourage citizens to catch bike thieves.
D.To show how badly the police perform their duties.
2.What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A.Bike Batman began his good deeds by accident.
B.The thief refused to return the bike.
C.The police failed to catch the thief.
D.Bike Batman doesn’t like online shopping.
3.What will Bike Batman do first when he discovers a questionable bike?
A.To contact the owner of the stolen bike.
B.To surf the net for more information of the bike.
C.To call the police department immediately.
D.To arrange to meet the thief at once.
4.What kind of person do the underlined words “Robin Hood” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.A superhero who always punishes criminals.
B.A clever person who is good at buying and selling bikes.
C.Someone who hates the rich and is friendly to the poor.
D.A heroic person who likes robbing the rich to help the poor.
