In the past 50 years, the amount of water in the open ocean with zero oxygen has gone up more than fourfold. In coastal water bodies, including river mouths and seas, low-oxygen sites have increased more than tenfold since 1950.Scientists expect oxygen to continue dropping even outside these zones as Earth warms .
“Oxygen is fundamental to life in the Oceans,” said Denise Breitburg, a marine ecologist with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. “The decline in ocean oxygen ranks among the most serious effects of human activities on the Earth ’s environment. Actually, it's a great loss to all the support services that rely on recreation and tourism, including hotels and restaurants and taxi drivers and everything else. The reverberations(严重影响) of unhealthy ecosystems in the ocean can be extensive.”
In areas traditionally called “dead zones" , like those in Chesapeake Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, oxygen plummets(大幅下跌) to so low levels that many animals die. As fish avoid these zones, their habitats become smaller and they’ re easier to be attacked or caught. But the problem goes far beyond “dead zones”. Even smaller oxygen decline can prevent growth in animals, hinder reproduction and lead to disease or even death. It also can cause the release of dangerous chemicals such as nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas up to 300 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. While some animals can boom in “dead zones”,overall biodiversity falls.
Climate change is the key criminal in the open ocean. Warming surface waters make it harder for oxygen to reach the inside of the ocean. Furthermore, as the ocean as a whole gets warmer, it holds less oxygen. In coastal waters, too much nutrient pollution from land creates algal blooms, which use up oxygen as they die and break down.
People's livelihoods are also on the line, the scientists reported, especially in developing nations. Smaller fisheries(渔场)may be unable to relocate when low oxygen destroys their harvests or forces fish to move elsewhere. So we humans have to carry on a war now and win the war.
1.What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The ocean has been losing its oxygen. B.The amount of sea water is increasing.
C.The coastal water bodies are dangerous. D.The Earth becomes warmer and warmer.
2.What can we infer from Denise Breitburg's words?
A.Different oceans have different levels of oxygen.
B.The decline in ocean oxygen has great influences.
C.The future of tourism relies on the levels of ocean oxygen.
D.The decrease in ocean oxygen is the most serious environment problem.
3.How does the “dead zone" affect sea animals?
A.It offers more food. B.It forms dangerous gas.
C.It reduces their living areas. D.It produces more carbon dioxide.
4.How can we win the war according to the text?
A.By closing smaller fisheries. B.By controlling humans' bad activities.
C.By improving people's living standards. D.By stopping nutrients entering the ocean.

Back in 1963, a company in the US was suffering from low employee(员工) spirit. Everyone was worried that they might lose their jobs, since the company had just joined up with another company, which meant there were suddenly more employees than needed.
That was when Harvey Ball(1921﹣2001), an artist, was invited by the company to find a way to raise the workplace's spirit. It took Ball less than 10 minutes to draw a smiley face on a bright yellow background, which was then made into buttons that employees could wear on their jackets as a reminder to smile at each other. The face soon became part of the companys culture and was introduced across the country, and﹣ before Ball realized it﹣to the world.
However, as much effort as Ball made, that "message"soon grew to become twisted(歪曲的). Just think about it: How many of us still use the simple smiley face emoji just to say, "I'm smiling "? Chances are when we use it, we often mean, "I'm just going to ignore you or"That' s just perfect"﹣ in a sarcastic(讽刺的)way. And our favorite emojis perhaps also include the upside﹣down face or the face with tears of joy ﹣both changed from Ball's former smiley face﹣ and yet, both are often used sarcastically.
Indeed, in today's world, we deal with many things with sarcasm instead of with a smile, perhaps because were finding it harder and harder to be happy. but we keep forgetting about the fact that happiness and smiling go both ways. As Vietnamese spiritual teacher Thich Nhat Hanh once said, "Sometimes, your joy is the source of your smile. But sometimes, your smile can be the source of your joy That was probably what was in Balls mind when he first came up with the smiley face: A smile brings joy, and joy brings people closer together.
1.Ball drew the smiley face in order to .
A. show his gift for drawing
B. decorate the employees jackets
C. cheer up the employees in the company
D. spread the company's culture to the world
2.According to Paragraph 2, the smiley face has been .
A. changed gradually
B. used in a bitter way
C. ignored completely
D. recognized as a happier sign
3.What can we learn from the text?
A. Smiling can bring about happiness.
B. Smiling is not popular in today's world.
C. We should make ourselves happier in a different way.
D. We haven't understood the true meaning of the smiley face.

When the weather turns warm, everyone wants to be in or around the water. Learning how to keep safe is necessary if you plan to go swimming.
“Buddy up!” Always swim with a partner, every time-and this is very important. Even experienced swimmers can become tired or face sudden accidents, which might make it difficult to get out of the water. When you swim together, you can help each other or go for help in a minute.
Get skilled. It’s good to go be fully prepared. Learning some life-saving skills can help you save a life. A number of organizations offer free classes to both beginning and experienced swimmers and boaters. Check with local hospitals, or the Red Cross.
Know your limits (极限). Swimming an be a lot of fun and you might want to stay in the water as long as possible. If you’re not a good swimmer or you’re just learning to swim, don’t go in water that’s so deep for you and don’t try to keep up with skilled swimmers. That can be dangerous, especially when your friends are challenging you.
If you are a good swimmer and have had lessons, keep an eye on friends who aren’t as comfortable or as skilled as you are. If they or you are getting tired, you should take a break for a while.
Swim in safe areas only. It’s a good idea to swim only in places that are directed by a lifeguard. No one can expect changing ocean currents (水流), sudden storms, or other dangers. In the event that something does go wrong, lifeguards trained in life-saving skills are ready to help.
Swimming in an open body of water like a lake is different from swimming in a pool. Do your research so you know where not to swim, and pay attention to any warning sign(警告标志) posted in the area.

The Harp Seal is one of nature’s most beautiful and appealing (吸引人的) creatures. Many years ago it was hunted for its fur. Hunting Harp Seals is now illegal.
The seals spend the summer months migrating (迁徙) in large groups. Harp Seals close their nostrils (鼻孔) and earholes when diving in water, but have to surface frequently to breathe. Their favourite place to rest is on the top of icebergs.
The female Harp Seal gives birth in February or March and feeds her pups for 14-18 days. Baby Harp Seals begin to lose their white fur at around six to eight weeks of age. As an adult, the Harp Seal has brown skin. At birth, Harp Seals weigh 12kg but can weigh up to 130kg as adults. Harp Seals eat small fish, shrimps and krill. However, they are able to switch from one food to another depending on what they can get as food. Males have a lifespan of 29 years while females usually live for longer than 30 years.
