A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly( 经常地)remind him about his meetings, his classes, even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors, “If John didn’t have his head tied on, he would forget that too!” Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn’t that he was not clever, as some critical people tended to say, but just very, very absent-minded.
One hot summer day, Pro.Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor’s wife was surprised to see him again so soon.
“Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town.”
“What? You forgot the name? Maybe one day you will forgot my name! Now I’ll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don’t forget where you put it.”
Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed.
A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example.Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner.Ronny said excitedly,"Some people are fighting!Let's go and have a look!"But Henry refused,"It's none of our business. We'd better go home and don't get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me."
"You are a coward((懦夫),and afraid to go,"said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys.Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on,they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus,he just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However,Ronny didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore.Instead,he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward.Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

When the young horse Daisy May came to us, she was pregnant (怀孕的). With no related experience, I was unprepared for what might come next.
After some difficulty, Daisy’s baby was born. I heard a gurgling noise. I couldn’t believe that baby was breathing and blinking his big brown eyes at me! We called him Samson, and of course I became his mother as much as Daisy was. I prepared to bottle-feed him, but Samson quickly found his natural food source. Thank God! This new mother was going to stay with her baby.
Samson has grown up surrounded with loving companions. I had to separate Daisy and Samson for a few hours a day when he was nine months old to wean (使……断奶) him, but otherwise he goes wherever she does. I think she would be lost without him. His horse stepdad Bernard taught him to always be ready to have fun. They enjoy playing football together and going for a roll on a hot summer day.
I asked a worker to make a harness (马具) for my three little horses. When I brought it home I taught them one by one how to pull a cart. Samson watched and freely followed Daisy. When he was three, I put the harness on him and he knew exactly what to do.
The most exciting thing about Samson is that he has become a little famous for his talents. Last winter, I wondered how Samson would feel about dragging a plastic sled behind him with me sitting on it. No problem at all- we moved smoothly across the snow.
People came from all over to see him perform.

We went to Darjelling during the summer holidays and booked a cottage(农舍) for our stay. Our cook Gopi came with us because we could not do without home-cooked meals.
Usually all the shopping was done by our home help Bharat, who went to our holiday destination with us. However, one early evening, my mother decided to do all the vegetable shopping by herself. She believed that Bharat did not wait to check the really fresh items and instead, bought some things in a hurry. As a result, the vegetables he brought back were not fresh.
After getting ready, she took her favorite purse with quite an amount of money, thinking she could go to other shops too after finishing at the vegetable market. My mother asked Bharat to get a rickshaw for her and on reaching the market, she asked the rickshaw wallah ( 人力车车夫) to wait for her. She took a coolie (小工) and did her shopping happily, choosing some of the freshest green vegetables available there. At last, her shopping was done. She returned to the rickshaw and sat on it while the coolie put all the things my mother had bought onto the rickshaw.
On reaching home, Bharat took all the packets of vegetables inside and my mother quickly paid the rickshaw wallah and got off, forgetting to collect her purse from the seat of the rickshaw. The rickshaw wallah left soon after saying goodbye to my mother. All of us greeted my mother and asked her about her evening of shopping with much delight.
Then we began to help my mother prepare our dinner. My father came to help cut the meat; I helped wash the vegetables; we were talking and laughing. When dinner was ready, it was late in the evening, almost 9 p.m.

Three years ago. I was arranged to work for a few weeks as a dentist in a new dental clinic at Victor Harbor, to the south of Adelaide and an hour further away than my usual workplace. My first day there was rush driving to a new and unfamiliar clinic and getting used to the different rules and clinical environment.
In my worry and anxiety, and feeling a little unfamiliar in the new setting, I removed my three things: my wedding ring, a ring that belonged to my mother and one that was an anniversary gift from my husband. I wrapped them in a tissue(纸巾) and placed them beside my computer.
During my lunch break, I noticed the wrinkled tissue and thought that it didn’t look very neat and dropped it into the rubbish bin. I went about my duties and my day went on well; I met new patients and felt that I had been productive and efficient. Driving home at the end of the day, just moments before I reached my house, I noticed that I was missing my rings. I felt the heart in my body rose, my cheeks burning red. I went inside and tried to calm down. I felt sick to my stomach and I had that sinking feeling in my heart. I spent an hour or so making calls trying to follow the track of my rings. The first people I called was my manager and clinical leader and they gave me a few contact numbers for cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic and she informed me that the bins had already been collected.
Heartbroken, I knew nothing could be done now. I had lost my wedding ring and one of my most treasured rings my mother’s wedding ring. Had it not been for my carelessness, all this would not have happened. With great sorrow and regret, I just sat there rooted in my chair.

One day Mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. However, little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose pleasant smell filled the car. Suddenly, Mom pulled over. She hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat.
''It'll just be a minute,'' she said.
Impatiently, I caught sight of a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared empty handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, ''Do you know someone there?'' She shook her head. ''Then what did you do with the flowers? '' She smiled slightly, ''I gave them to the receptionist. '' ''What?'' She laughed at my confusion. ''I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them.''
I kept silent for a moment. Then I asked her, ''Did you leave your name? '' To this she answered instantly, ''No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.''
Lost in thought, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the garage was.
Not knowing what to do, Mom and I decided to walk back to the nursing home and seek help. When we arrived, the receptionist was surprised, but warmly helped us contact the garage. There, the old men who had received the flowers were excited to meet us, talking about how great that day was. It amazed us what random actions of kindness could mean to the people who received them. While we were laughing and talking merrily, we received the news that the garage had got our car repaired.
As we drove along the road, a flower shop came into sight. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

My crippled(瘸腿) grandmother was dancing. I stood in the living room doorway, absolutely shocked. I heard her sing when I opened the door but did not want to interrupt her by shouting I had arrived. She was wearing beautiful dancing shoes and her legs obeyed her perfectly. As long as I could remember, she was once the pet of the dancing world. But it was all over after a sudden accident. She had always limped(一瘸一拐地走),helped with a cane(拐杖).
She turned around and saw me standing in the doorway. Her song ended, and her beautiful movements with it. Grandma turned towards the kitchen. She was walking with no difficulties in her beautiful shoes. I followed her, not believing my eyes.
“So…” I asked surprisedly but happily, “How did your leg heal(康复)?”
“To tell you the truth—my legs have been well all my life,” she said.
“But I don’t understand!” I said, “ I mean… You pretended all these years?
“Very much so,” Grandmother closed her eyes, “And for a very good reason.”
“What reason?”
“Your grandfather.”
“You mean he told you not to dance?”
“No, this was my choice. I am sure I would have lost him if I had continued dancing. I weighed fame(名声)and love against each other and love won.”
“We were talking about engagement(订婚)when your grandfather had to go to war. It was the most terrible day of my life when he left. I was so afraid of losing him, the only way I could stay peaceful was to dance. And then one day a letter came. There were only three sentences:‘I have lost my leg. I am no longer a whole man and now give you back your freedom. It is best you forget about me.’”
Grandma continued to tell me that Grandfather was in hospital and she made her decision not to give him up. She took her leave, and traveled away from the city.
Several weeks later, she returned.

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people hardly visited. The house was very old and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out he would not say hello to neighbors or passers by but simply just glare(瞪眼看)at them.
The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy's parents told him to stay away from the house. A lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same from their parents.
As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. " What do you want?" the old man said. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota(份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines.
"Uh, sir, I uh am selling these magazines and uh I was wondering if you would like to buy one." The old man just stared at the boy. The boy could see inside the old man's house and saw that he had dog figurines(小狗雕像) on the wall. "Do you collect dogs?" the little boy asked. "Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here. They are all I have." The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul. "Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much." The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, "No boy, I don't need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye."
The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the big house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. Although it was autumn, the snow was already beginning to fall in Tibet. Our legs were so heavy and cold that they felt like blocks of ice. Have you ever seen snowmen ride bicycles? That's what we looked like!Along the way children dressed in long wool coats stopped to look at us. In the late afternoon we found it was so cold that our water bottles froze. However, the lakes shone like glass in the setting sun and looked wonderful. Wang Wei rode in front of me as usual. She is very reliable and I knew I didn’t need to encourage her. To climb the mountains was hard work but as we looked around us,we were surprised by the view. We seemed to be able to see for miles. At one point we were so high that we found ourselves cycling through clouds. Then we began going down the hills. It was great fun especially as it gradually became much warmer. In the valleys colorful butterflies flew around us and we saw many yaks and sheep eating green grass. At this point we had to change our caps, coats, gloves and trousers for T-shirts and shorts.
In the early evening we always stop make camp. We put up tent and then we eat. After supper Wang Wei put her head down on her pillow and went to sleep but I stayed awake. At midnight the sky became clearer and the stars grew brighter. It was so quiet. There was almost no wind-only the flames of our fire for company.

A friend of mine named Paul received an automobile from his brother as a Christmas present.
On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a little boy was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it. "Is this your car, Mister?" he asked.
Paul nodded. "My brother gave it to me for Christmas." "The boy was astounded. "You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you anything? Boy, I wish..." He hesitated.
Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the lad said jarred Paul all the way down to his heels.
"I wish," the boy went on, "that I could be a brother like that” Paul looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added, "Would you like to take a ride in my automobile?"
"Oh yes, I'd love that."
After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes aglow, said, "Mister, would you mind driving in front of my house?"

From the first week of high school, my best friend, Tina, was always going out with the popular girls. At first I thought, “It’s okay, she’s just making new friends.” But soon I realized that Tina wasn’t interested in me anymore. I’d lost my best friend. It really hurt me.
One day, I told Tina that we should stop pretending to be friends when we really weren’t anymore. I wasn’t trying to make her mad, but she was. After that, Tina started talking about me behind my back, telling people that I was bad. Some of our friends were on her side. I felt like she was taking them away from me.
The more I thought about it, the angrier I got. Finally, I took up a picture of Tina and drew lines on her face. I wrote “I hate this person” across the bottom. And then I did something I’ll always regret: I put it on a website which I thought was popular. I thought people would see it, and it felt good to work off the anger. A week later, Tina’s mom saw the picture. She called my mom, who made me take it off the website right away. However, it was already too late. Lots of people had seen it, and I was in a lot of trouble. That whole day, I felt terrible. I had to say sorry to Tina face to face. She said she accepted my apology, but I felt she was still angry with me.
Posting that picture was one of the worst decisions I had ever made.
