动物英雄
Most people have mixed feelings about mice and avoid them if they can. Bart Weetjens thinks that we must treat mice as heroes.
He started an organization called APOPO in Tanzania. Bart's organization trains African giant mice to smell the ground in order to find underground landmines (地雷) left in the area during past wars. Many of these landmines are still active. They often explode (爆炸), killing and injuring thousands of people each year. Villagers avoid places where the dangerous landmines are. But much of this land could be used as valuable farmland if the mines weren't there. These mice are helping villagers get their land back.
The giant mice are never mistreated. None of them die from doing their work. They even have sun block(防晒霜) put on their ears and tails while they work. And when they find a landmine, they get a treat!
While mice aren't usually seen as heroes, some animals, like dogs, often are. There are many stories about dogs that save lives, but dogs have another lifesaving skill that we're still learning about. Just like landmine—smelling mice, dogs have an amazing sense of smell. They're now being trained to smell out chemicals from the body which are connected to certain illnesses, sometimes even before doctors or medical tests can find them!
So, the next time you see a mouse or dog, don't be afraid of it anymore__Remember, these animal heroes can save lives.

It’s there, but it has no weight, no colour, and you can’t smell it. You can’t see it, but it’s working everywhere in our modern world. Don’t try to touch it! It’s dangerous. It has always existed, but humans learned about it only 500 years ago.
What is it? Electricity. It’s powerful and mysterious. Thanks to electricity, you can flick a switch(开关)and have light. Watched a good TV show lately? You couldn’t do that without electricity. We cook our food, heat our homes and run our computers using electricity. But what is it, really?
Here is a simple description. Everything in the world is made of atoms (原子). Atoms are small. You can fit millions of them on the head of a pin. In every atom, there are electrons (电子), protons (质子) and neutrons (中子). In some atoms, it is possible to move electrons easily from one atom to another. As the electrons move, a current(电流) is created. This is electricity.
Don’t worry if you don’t understand it fully. Just remember that electricity is the result of the movement of electrons. As the electrons move, they create a strong electric charge.
There are many ways to generate electricity. A machine called a generator spins(旋转) rapidly. Water and wind can make a generator spin. So can motors fuelled by oil. As the generator spins, the electrons begin to move. As they move, they create an electric current. Power lines (电线) are built from generators to carry this current to places where people can use it. Along your street, power lines bring electricity right to your door. A wire runs into your house. More wires inside your house are attached to the plugs. Plug in your lamp, the electricity lights up the bulb, and you have light!
It takes a lot of energy to make electricity. Oil is one of the main fuels(燃料) used to power electric generators. Another common fuel is coal. Our planet is running out of these resources, and using them creates a lot of pollution.
In the future, most electricity will be produced using the sun and wind. But for now, be careful about how much electricity you use. Don’t forget to turn off the lights when you leave a room. Every little bit helps.

Antigua in Guatemala(危地马拉) is a place where time stopped three centuries ago. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Central America. In this city, you can feel what life was like in the past.
You can see the buildings that people designed in the 1700s. You can walk in the streets, see the Cathedral of San Jose, and visit the church.
I have visited this city several times because I like it so much, but I will never forget my first time in this city. I was 12 years old when I first discovered the streets covered with small stones, the houses with big windows and beautiful gardens, the colonial(殖民地的) buildings, the people from different cultures walking around the central park, and the natives wearing the typical multicolored clothes and talking with the tourists to try to sell their products.
I still remember the taste of the candies from the Kona Maria Gordillo Shop and the smell of hot chocolate and banana bread from the Dona Luisa Chicothencalh Restaurant.
Antigua mixes the past with the present, and I think this is one of the reasons that make people who visit this city feel delighted. To me, thinking about Antigua is like travelling back to another epoch(时代). If you have the opportunity to travel to Guatemala and also want to travel back to colonial times, you must visit this beautiful city.
1.The writer likes Antigua so much that he has ________.
A.lived there B.worked there C.visited there many times D.planned to live there
2.The writer bought________ at the Kona Maria Gordillo Shop.
A.candies B.chocolate C.bananas D.bread
3.The underlined word “delighted” in the passage means “________” in Chinese.

4.What is the best title for this passage?
A.A Beautiful City in Central America
B.A Beautiful Building in Central America
C.The Food of Central America
D.The Culture of Central America
