The Fish I Didn’t Catch
I still remember my first fishing trip as if it were but yesterday. It was a still, sweet day of early summer. I received the first fishing pole from my uncle’s hand, and walked with him towards the _____.
My uncle, who knew where the best hangouts of fish were, kindly placed me at the most favorable point. I threw out my line as I had so often seen others, and ____ eagerly for a bite. Nothing came of it. “Try again,” said my uncle. Suddenly the bait(鱼饵) went down out of sight. “Now for it,” I thought, “Here is a fish at last.”
I made a strong pull, and brought up a tangle of weeds(一团海草). Again and again I cast out my line and drew it back ____. I looked at my uncle appealingly(可怜巴巴地). “Try once more,” he said, “We fishermen must have ____. It took me a whole day until I got my first fish.”
Suddenly something pulled hard at my line, and swept off with it into deep water. Jerking it up, I saw a big fish wriggling(扭来扭去) in the sun. “Uncle!” I cried, looking back in uncontrollable ____, “I’ve got a fish!” “Not yet,” said my uncle. As he spoke, there was a plash(泼溅) in the water, my hook hung empty from the line. I had lost my ____. My patience was used up.
I sat down on the nearest stone and ____ to be comforted. Even my uncle promised that there were more fish in the river. He refitted my bait, put the pole again in my hands, and told me to try my luck once more.
“But remember, boy,” he said, “Never show off catching a fish until he is on dry ground.”
Though years have now passed, I have always been reminded of the fish that I did not catch. When I hear people show off a work as yet undone, I call to mind that scene by the river, and the wise warning of my uncle, “It’s no use to talk too ____ about anything until it’s done.”

It was my first day at school in London and I was half-excited and half-frightened. On my way to school I wondered what sort of questions the other boys would ask me and practiced all the answers: “I am nine years old. I was born here but I haven’t lived here since I was two. I was living in Farley. It’s about thirty miles away. I came back to London two months ago.” I also wondered if it was the custom(习惯)for boys to fight strangers like me, but I was tall for my age. I hoped they would decide not to risk(冒险)it.
No one took any notice of me before school. I stood in the center of the playground, expecting someone to say “hello”, but no one spoke to me. When a teacher called my name and told me where my classroom was, one or two boys looked at me but that was all the curiosity my arrival aroused(唤醒).
My teacher was called Mr. Jones. There were 42 boys in the class, so I didn’t stand out there, either, until the first lesson of the afternoon. Mr. Jones was very fond of Charles Dickens and he had decided to read aloud to us from David Copperfield, but first he asked several boys if they knew Dickens’ birthplace, but no one guessed right. A boy called Brian, the biggest in the class, said: “Timbuktu”, and Mr. Jones went red in the face. Then he asked me. I said: “Portsmouth”, and everyone stared at me because Mr. Jones said I was right. This didn’t make me very popular, of course.
“He thinks he’s clever,” I heard Brian say.
After that, we went out to the playground to play football. I was in Brian’s team, and he obviously had Dickens in mind because he told me to go in goal. No one ever wanted to be the goalkeeper.
“He’s big enough and useless enough,” Brian said when someone asked him why he had chosen me.
I suppose Mr. Jones remembered Dickens, too, because when the game was nearly over, Brian pushed one of the players on the other team, and he gave them a penalty(罚球). As the boy kicked the ball hard along the ground to my right, I threw myself down instinctively(本能地)and saved it. All my team crowded round me. My bare knees were grazed(擦伤)and bleeding. Brian took out a handkerchief and offered it to me.
“Do you want to join my team?” he said.
At the end of the day, I was no longer a stranger.
1.The writer prepared to answer all of the following questions EXCEPT “_________”.
A. How old are you?
B. Where are you from?
C. Do you want to join my team?
D. When did you come back to London?
2.We can learn from the passage that _________.
A. boys were usually unfriendly to new students
B. the writer was not greeted as he expected
C. Brian praised the writer for his cleverness
D. the writer was glad to be a goalkeeper
3.The underlined part “I didn’t stand out” in paragraph 3 means that the writer was not _______.
A. noticeable(值得注意的) B. welcome
C. important D. popular
4.What can we infer from the fact that the writer was offered a handkerchief?
A. He threw himself down and saved the goal.
B. He pushed a player on the other team.
C. He was beginning to be accepted.
D. He was no longer a new comer.

It was near Christmas during my first term teaching at a new school. I loved my small special class more than any group I had taught in the past. They were hungry for knowledge and I was enjoying teaching.
Other teachers had told me that our children were from poor families and not to expect any child to bring a Christmas gift. In fact, I wasn’t expecting any gifts.
Imagine my surprise when every child brought me a gift on the day before our holiday break. First, I got a much-loved toy monkey from a shy girl. I was told, “He is my favorite, but I love you and I want him to be with you, Miss Taylor.” How thrilled I was!
Next came a new set of Christmas tree lights that was “missing” from a mother’s cupboard(碗橱).
Finally, I came to one little boy’s gift which I had never received. It was an old, dirty and broken Christmas storybook. Just when I wanted to show my happiness, I was interrupted(打断) by the giver, “And see, it is new! It still has the price tag(标签).”
When other children laughed at him, I stopped them and said, “Oh, books are good in that way. The story is always new if you have not read it before. Now, Let’s read one together.” Everyone listened quietly as I read the most wonderful Christmas story of my life.
I still keep those Christmas gifts. They always remind me of my lovely kids.
