NASA has a new job listing, and it’s no joke. The US space agency is looking for a “joker” to join their planned mission (任务) to Mars.
A mission to Mars is no laughing matter. The red planet is 140 million miles away from Earth. A trip there would take around 8 months in a small spaceship.
“When you’re living with others in a confident space for a long period of time, problems are likely to take place,” Jeffre Johnson a scientist at the University of Florida said.
This is probably why NASA wants an astronaut with a sense of humor (幽默感). “There are people that have the ability to pull everyone together,” Johnson said.
In stressful situations, perhaps humor is a way to know we aren’t alone. By laughing together, we share our stress. Then we can pay more attention to our jobs instead of just worrying.
There are other examples of team “clowns (小丑)”. One example is the journey to the South Pole (南极) led by Norwegian explore (探险家) Roald Amundson. It was a difficult journey, full of danger. Adolf Lindstorm, A cook at Amundson’s team, was a “clown”. He made people laugh through the whole journey. Amundson later wrote that Lindstrom was the most valuable member of the team.
But if you’re hoping that your favorite TV comedian (喜剧演员) will fly to Mars, that probably won’t happen.
“Being funny won’t be enough to land somebody the job,” Johnson said. “They also need to be an excellent scientist and engineer.” Besides, they must be in top physical condition.

On May 27th, the national cultural office dropped management of vendors and other roadside businesses in the city as a requirement for deciding if ạ city can be given the civilized city" title. In less than a week, one city after another has introduced polices (政策) that will benefit (使受益 )vendors and a wide group of other people and will also raise the economy (经济).
The first to benefit are job—seekers. In Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, which is famous for its rich kinds of snacks, the policy created 100,000 new jobs overnight, and 100,000 households have got a better income.
Vendors do not have to spend money renting ( 租用) a place. All they need is a 2 square meters of space by the roadside for two to three hours in the evening. And all the money they make from it goes to them or their families. However, that does not mean common shops will lose customers. The two kinds of businesses are different parts of economy.
Office——goers too will benefit. Instead of having to wait in a long line at a supermarket, they can now snack from a vendor after a whole day in the office. They can appear from a subway station and grab a cake or get off a bus and buy some handmade ice—cream.
City management officials, or chengguan are also doing less stressful jobs now. Earlier, their job was to drive away vendors doing businesses without licenses. They are now more helpful, making sure that vendors are dealing with their garbage before shutting business for the day and looking for space for vendors at a place with no traffic problems or which won' t cause traffic problems.
But that will need more wisdom and more services to the people, which in turn requires the local governments' wisdom. Time for them to be creative!

Some primary schoolchildren have been raised in homes with more green space around. They are likely to come with larger volumes of white and grey matter in certain areas of the brain. These differences are associated(关联)with good influence on cognitive function(认知功能). This is the main conclusion of a study led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health.
The study was performed among 253 schoolchildren in Spain. Lifelong exposure(接触) to green space in the living places was recorded―using the information on the children's addresses from birth up through to the time of the study. Brain structure was studied using 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Working memory and inattentiveness(注意力不集中)were graded with computers.
"This is the first study that shows the association between long-term exposure to green space and brain structure." Says Dr. Payam Dadvand, the leading researcher of the study, "Our findings suggest that exposure to green space early in life could result in good structural changes in the brain."
The findings show that long-term exposure to greenness is positively associated with white and grey matter volumes in several parts of the brain. Some of them are related to(与 ……有关)higher scores on cognitive tests. Moreover, larger volumes of white and grey matter in those parts might lead to better working memory and less inattentiveness.
Exposure to nature has been thought to be necessary for brain development in children. Another study of 2,593 children shows that children in school with more green space have a greater increase in working memory and a greater decrease in inattentiveness.
Humans are believed to be tied to nature. Playing in greener areas offers children chances to search and learn. Accordingly, green space is thought to prompt important exercises in discovery, creativity and risk taking. These exercises in turn positively influence brain development.
Dr. Dadvand's study suggests how such structural changes could bring about the good influence of green spaces on cognitive development, it also adds to the proof that suggests the lasting influence of early life exposure to greenness on our health and the importance of increasing greenness in cities.
Further studies are needed to prove the findings in other populations, settings and climates. And researchers need to examine differences according to the nature and quality of green space.
1.The second paragraph is mainly about________ .
A.how long the study lasted B.what was recorded in the study
C.how the study was carried out D.who took part in the study
2.The word "prompt" in paragraph 6 probably means "________ ".
A.control B.encourage C.balance D.change
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Working memory influences white and grey matter in the brain.
B.Dr. Dadvand stressed the importance of changing the environment.
C.Studies proved the influence of greenness on populations out of Spain.
D.Living in greener neighborhoods is good for children in brain development.
