National lawmakers are calling for more effective environmental protection of the Qilian Mountains, a vast natural habitat in western China.
The mountains stand across the border between Gansu and Qinghai provinces. The nature reserve became a national protected site in 1988, but hundreds of mines in the area and various construction projects took a toll on the environment.
Thanks to the recovery of the mountains’ environment and greater efforts to protect wildlife, many protected and rare wild animals have been sighted very often in recent years.
The city has also moved away all farmers, herdsmen and one-third of its people who were living in the mountains to a new zone and helped them find jobs in an effort to reduce the pressure on the environment.
Scientific research and advanced technology are key to the restoration (重建) of the mountains’ ecology (生态), said Wang Tao, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources.
Wang said a research center led by the institute was set up last year to focus on ecosystem recovery and the ecological management of the mountains under the influence of global climate change.
The center has begun research to carry out environmental observation and assessment (评估), providing support for the creation of a Qilian Mountains national park, he added.
To better protect the mountains, Wang said, it’s necessary to promote large-scale, rapid observation approach and build a great ecological assessment system in the reserve.
A data-sharing (数据共享) management system should be pushed forward to create a database (数据库) of the mountains, environment, which would support its protection in a scientific way, he added.
1.What does the underlined phrase “took a toll” in the second paragraph mean?
A.protected B.ignored C.harmed D.controlled
2.What’s the purpose of moving away people working and living in the mountains?
A.To create a national park
B.To found a research center.
C.To increase the number of wildlife.
D.To reduce the pressure on the environment.
3.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Rare wild animals can be seen everywhere in the reserve.
B.A research center was established for ecosystem restoration.
C.Since 1988, the Qilian Mountains have been well protected.
D.Many effective laws have been made to protect the environment.
4.What do Wang Tao’s words suggest?
A.An ecological assessment system should be set up.
B.Scientific research plays the biggest part in restoring ecology.
C.Global climate change influences the research on ecological assessment.
D.A data-sharing management system has been widely applied in the reserve.

Running is often tiring and a lot of hard work, but nothing beats the feeling you get after finishing a long workout around the track.
But while it’s long been believed that endorphins (脑内啡) — chemicals in the body that cause happiness — are behind the so-called “runner’s high”, a study suggested that there may be more to this phenomenon than we previously knew.
According to a recent study published by a group of scientists from several German universities, a group of chemicals called endocannabinoids (内源性大麻素) may actually be responsible for this familiar great feeling.
To test this theory, the scientists turned to mice.
Both mice and humans release high levels of endorphins and endocannabinoids after exercise, along with many other chemicals. After exercising on running wheels, the mice seemed happy and relaxed and displayed no signs of anxiety.
But after being given a drug to block their endorphins the change. However, when their endocannabinoids were block with a different drug, their runner’s high symptoms seemed to fade.
“The long-held notion of endorphins being responsible for the runner's high is false. Endorphins are effective pain relievers, but only when it comes to the pain in your body and muscles you feel after working out,” Patrick Lucas Austin wrote on science blog Lifchacker.
Similar studies are yet to be carried out on humans, but it’s already well known that exercise is a highly effective way to get rid of stress or anxiety.
The UK’s National Health Service even prescribes (开药方) exercise to patients who are suffering from depression.
“Being depressed can leave you feeling low in energy, which might put you off being more active. Regular exercise can boost your mood if you have depression, and it’s especially useful for people with mild to moderate (中等的) depression,” it wrote on its website.
It seems like nothing can beat that feeling we get after a good workout, even if we don’t fully understand where it comes from. At least if we’re feeling down, we know that all we have to do is put on our running shoes.
1.What did scientists from German universities recently discover?
A.Working out is a highly effective way to treat depression.
B.The runner’s high could be caused by endocannabinoids.
C.Endorphins may contribute to one’s high spirits after running.

2.The scientists gave mice drugs in their experiment to .
A.find what reduces the runner’s high symptoms
B.see the specific symptoms of the runner’s high
C.identify what is responsible for the runner’s high
D.test what influences the level of endocannabinoids released
3.The underlined word “notion” in Paragraph 7 has the closest meaning to .
A.effect B.goal
C.question D.belief
4.According to the UK’s National Health Service, regular workouts .
A.are the best way to treat depression
B.can help ease depression symptoms
C.only work for those with serious depression
D.can help people completely recover from depression

I teach online and have been doing so for years .I understand the value of traditional face-to-face course offerings for certain courses and certain subjects. I doubt an online course in chemistry can ever be as effective (有效的) as a face-to-face course held in a lab. Fortunately, I teach writing, and the Internet is an effective place for teaching subjects that call for careful reading and discussion.
It is true that there are things I cannot do in my classes on the Internet. It is also true, however, that there are things I cannot do in my classes held in traditional classrooms. So the question we should ask is: What works better or worse in face-to-face classes rather than in online courses, and vice versa(反之亦然)?
One of the things I value most in my online classes is the necessity for everyone to take part in order to show their presence. In my face-to-face classes, a student can sit quietly and appear to be engaged in(积极参与) the discussion without ever offering a thought or opinion. Online, I consider a student who sits quietly but who does not join in the discussion to be simply not present. Further, students in face-to-face classes who are too shy or who are talked over by quicker and louder voices have the chance to take part in an online discussion.
When I teach online, my students and I can be inside or outside and we can sit wherever and however we want. In Michigan, where a winter storm can make going to campus dangerous or even impossible, the ability to learn in class from the comfort of wherever you live is a big advantage. When the weather is not nice, I often teach while sitting in a local coffee shop. When the weather is nice, I often teach while sitting in my backyard.
I agree that online education is not a “recipe (秘诀)for personal success.” Then again, I’m not sure traditional face-to-face education is such a recipe, either.
1.What does the author think of online courses and traditional courses?
A.Chemistry courses can be done online.
B.Online courses are more popular.
C.Traditional courses are more helpful.
D.Both have their advantages.
2.How can shy students benefit from online discussion?
A.They can do a better job than louder students.
B.They can sit quietly to listen to others opinions.
C.They can think independently and take an active part.
D.They can appear to be engaged in online discussion.
3.Which advantage of online teaching is mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A.It is much safer. B.It is less affected by weather.
C.It is more comfortable. D.It happens anytime.
4.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Why I teach online. B.I’ m online.
C.A recipe for success. D.A new teaching style.

If you ask people to name one person who had the greatest effect on the English language, you will get answers like “Shakespeare” “Samuel Johnson” and “Webster”, but none of these men had any effect at all compared to a man who didn’t even speak English - William the Conqueror.
Before 1066, in the land we now call Great Britain lived people belonging to two major language groups. In the westcentral region lived the Welsh, who spoke a Celtic language, and in the north lived the Scots, whose language, though not the same as Welsh, was also Celtic. In the rest of the country lived the Saxons, actually a mixture of Anglos, Saxons, and other Germanic and Nordic peoples, who spoke what we now call AngloSaxon (or Old English), a Germanic language. If this state of affairs had lasted, English today would have been close to German.
But this state of affairs did not last. In 1066 the Normans led by William defeated the Saxons and began their rule over England. For about a century, French became the official language of England while Old English became the language of peasants. As a result, English words of politics and the law come from French rather than German. In some cases, modern English even shows a distinction between upperclass French and lowerclass AngloSaxon in its words. We even have different words for some foods, meat in particular, depending on whether it is still out in the fields or at home ready to be cooked, which shows the fact that the Saxon peasants were doing farming, while the upperclass Normans were doing most of eating.
When Americans visit Europe for the first time, they usually find Germany more “foreign” than France because the German they see on signs and advertisements seems much more different from English than French does. Few realize that the English language is actually Germanic at its beginning and that the French influences are all the result of the man’s ambition (野心).
1.The two major languages spoken in what is now called Great Britain before 1066 were ____.
A.Welsh and Scottish B.Nordic and Germanic
C.Celtic and Old English D.AngloSaxon and Germanic
2.Which of the following groups of words is, by inference, rooted in French?
A.president, lawyer, beef B.president, bread, water
C.bread, field, sheep D.folk, field, cow
3.Why does French appear less foreign than German to Americans on their first visit to Europe?
A.Many French words are similar to English ones.
B.They know little of the history of the English language.
C.Most advertisements in France appear in English.
D.They know French better than German.

Kong Zi, also called Confucius (551-479B. C. ), and Socrates (苏格拉底) (469-399 B. C. ) lived only a hundred years apart, and during their lifetimes there was no contact between China and Greece, but it is interesting to look at how the world that each of these great philosophers came from shaped their ideas, and how these ideas in turn, shaped their societies.
Neither philosopher lived in times of peace, though there were more wars in Greece than in China. The Chinese states were very large and feudal, while the Greek city-states were small and urban. The urban environment in which Socrates lived allowed him to be more radical (激进的) than Confucius. Unlike Confucius, Socrates was not asked by rulers how to govern effectively. Thus, Socrates was able to be more idealistic, focusing on issues like freedom, and knowledge for its own sake. Confucius, on the other hand, advised those in government service, and many of his students went out to government service.
Confucius suggested the Golden Rule as a principle for the conduct of life: “Do not do to others what you would not want others to do to you.” He assumed that all men were equal at birth, though some had more potential than others, and that it was knowledge that set men apart. Socrates focused on the individual, and thought that the greatest purpose of man was to seek wisdom. But like Confucius, he also believed that the superior class should rule the inferior (下层的) classes.
For Socrates, the family was of no importance, and the community of little concern. For Confucius, however, the family was the centre of the society, with family relations considered much more important than political relations.
Both men are respected much more today than they were in their lifetimes.

Imagine stepping out your front door and standing in the middle of a national park. Daniel hopes this might soon be possible for millions of London residents. Daniel is leading a campaign to make London a national park city.
Although London has much more concrete than a national park usually would, it is home to more than 13,000 kinds of wildlife. These species live in its 3,000 parks, along with 15,000 varieties of flowering plants, and more than 300 species of birds. In fact, 47 percent of the land in London is green space.
“We have 8 million trees in London; it’s the world’s largest urban forest,” Daniel says. That’s almost one tree for every person living in London! Yet, even though London has thousands of outdoor spaces, one in seven children living there hasn’t visited a green space in the past year.
Daniel believes that making London into a national park will protect the animal life and green spaces in London. He hopes it will also encourage people, especially young people, to spend more time outdoors. Daniel takes his own son out to explore in London, and he thinks that other parents should do the same. Daniel believes that people who spend a lot of time in nature live happier and healthier lives. What do you think?

The effect of having no friends
A study has found that people who are lonely have more physical and mental health problems than those who feel connected with others. It affects your health in four ways.
You are more likely to be depressed (抑郁的).
1. Researchers have shown that when you’re lonely, brain hormones associated with stress such as cortisol (皮质醇) become active, which can cause depression. The previous research has found that the more positive social interactions (交流) people with depression have, the more improvement in symptoms they experience.
2.
Research has shown you’ll eat less healthily if you frequently dine alone. Researchers have pointed out that if you are cooking for other people, you are more likely to prepare a healthier meal that contains a range of foods—meat, starch (淀粉) and vegetables. 3. People who are lonely are also more likely to be physically inactive.
You are more likely to suffer from heart disease.
Research has repeatedly shown lonely people have a higher risk of heart disease, and it’s for many reasons. Since they don’t have social support, they’re more likely to be affected by stress. 4. If they’re lonely, they’re less likely to be physically active or eat properly. If they don’t feel well, they’re much less likely to go to see a doctor.
5.
Research has found that loneliness can affect the immune (免疫的) system. People who are lonely produce more inflammation (发炎)—related proteins in response to stress than folks who feel more socially connected. Inflammation is linked to numerous health conditions including heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease.
A.You are likely to eat more food.
B.You had better get on well with others.
C.You are less likely to take care of yourself.
D.You could have a weaker system to fight off disease.
E.This increases the possibility of getting heart disease.
F.Otherwise, you’re just throwing something together for yourself.
G.The more lonely you feel, the more likely you are to be depressed.

“Children who eat three or more hamburgers a week are more likely to suffer from asthma (哮喘),” researchers say. However, they say that the risk may not be caused by the meat-rich diet itself, but by a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables.
The study looked into 50,000 children from 20 countries. Parents were asked about their children’s eating habits and whether they had ever suffered from asthma. The effects of their diet seemed to be different depending on where they lived. Fruit and vegetables are more helpful in less rich parts of the world, while eating lots of fish was more helpful in richer countries. Eating at least three hamburgers a week was linked to a greater risk of asthma, but only in wealthier countries.
Dr. Gabriele Nagel said different things may cause asthma in different parts of the world. “This gives us more understanding of how asthma affects different people, and its effects in developing as well as developed countries,” she said.
High levels of unhealthy fat in hamburgers could increase the risk of asthma. However, the researchers said children who ate several hamburgers a week might have other unhealthy lifestyle habits as well.
Researchers said the study helped us understand how asthma and diets are connected. “Previous (先前的) studies have shown that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables can help to reduce a child’s risk of developing asthma symptoms (症状),” Dr. Elaine Vickers said. “Our advice to parents is to make sure that children have a healthy diet and also get plenty of exercise.”
1.What can we know about asthma from paragraph 1?
A.The danger of it is common among children. B.Children who eat hamburgers suffer from it.
C.Lack of fruit and vegetables may cause it. D.The meat-rich diets can make it much worse.
2.What did parents do in the study?
A.They provided information about children’s eating habits.
B.They helped look into children from different countries.
C.They compared the effects of children’s diets right away.
D.They changed their children’s eating habits on purpose.
3.What do the researchers say about the study?
A.It shows fruit and vegetables stop children from developing asthma.
B.It is based on previous studies but the results are quite different.
C.It is helpful for them to know the relation between asthma and diets.
D.It offers many suggestions to parents and children on a healthy diet.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Risk of Asthma Is High in Wealthier Countries
B.Unhealthy Eating Habits May Lead to Asthma
C.Eating Hamburgers Increases the Risk of Asthma
D.Hamburgers Are Really Bad for People’s Health
