In the small town of Waterford, Ohio, one local household stands out. One fall Saturday every other year or so, Roger and Shirley Doak open their doors for family, friends and strangers. Since the 1960s, they’ve turned a day devoted to making apple butter into an all-day event. They start the fire at dawn, then take turns stirring it, and have a buffet until sunset. By the end of the day, they’ve created apple butter together.

Where to eat

There are a number of different places to eat in the shopping center.

The Noodle House is small, but very popular. The noodle soup tastes very good, and the fried noodles with roast pork are delicious. Everything is clean and the staffs are friendly. Prices are good too, but you may have to wait quite a long time as the restaurant is so busy.

Roma is a new restaurant. It is very smart, but the pizzas here do not taste good. We didn’t eat our fish as it smelled bad. The waiters looked angry and we thought it was very expensive. This restaurant has to improve.

The Tokyo Restaurant has been here for many years, and the staffs bow to customers when they enter and are very kind. The fish is very fresh and most of the food is delicious. The amount of food you get is quite small, but it always looks nice on the plate.

The Golden Dragon is a large Chinese restaurant. It has a lot of different food. The sweet and sour pork is excellent, the Beijing Duck is famous, and the winter melon soup is good. Go there for a really good meal, but expect to pay a lot. Prices are high.

The Come in Coffee Shop is very modern. There are many sorts of coffee and if you like sweet things, wait until you taste their cakes and cookies! You can also have sandwiches —— I enjoyed the egg sandwiches a lot. They have modern music playing , but it is very noisy, so it is quite difficult to have a conversation.

If you’re looking at Mercer’s top 20 livable cities as inspiration for your holiday, you would miss out many great places. Actually, many of the world’s most livable cities are a little dull. The world isn’t dashing to visit Canberra or Montreal. Obviously, considerations for enjoyable holiday hotspots are different from those that make cities comfortable places to live in.

This should be no surprise, since the various livability lists aren’t concerned with tourists or even native people. Mercer, for example, is a Britain-based consulting company whose lists provide multinationals with information about where to start their businesses. “The success of international business is mainly influenced by necessary things such as ease of travel, communication, personal safety and good public services,” says Slagin Parakatil, who leads Mercer’s research. “In short, Mercer’s rating is mainly determined by whether the cities are attractive to businesses, and have good schools, hospitals and nice offices.”

Still, Mercer’s Quality of Living Survey has its uses for tourists, since it also looks at natural and cultural environments and entertainments. It ranks public transport and infrastructure (基础设施) particularly high, a consideration shared by the World Economic Forum in reports on tourism and travel competitiveness. This includes hotels, rental-cars and even ATM numbers, all of which make a place friendly to businesses and visitors.
