The most popular television actor in China is not Chinese. He is a South Korean actor named Kim SooHyun (金秀贤) who stars in the TV play My love from the Star (<<来自星星的你>>).

The TV play is a part of the South Korean Wave (韩流) of cultural imports to China, which includes music and fashion. South Korean “cool” influences the clothes people wear, their hairstyles and even the food they eat. The favorite food in the show is fried chicken and beer, and as a result, young Chinese have been getting into the South Korean restaurants.

Although it is a small country with less than 50 million people, South Korea now has great influence  on other countries. This influence is called “soft power” and it is a way for a country to make friends.

Because of this “soft power”, more people are interested in South Korea and in studying the Korean language. At my school, a foreign languages school, more students are studying Korean than Japanese. And some of the students plan on surfing the South Korean Wave all the way to university in Korea.
