Child labor — the employment of children in industry, often against their will — has been a problem for many years. Over a hundred years ago, Charles Dickens shocked many of his readers when he described the conditions under which young children worked in British factories. The conditions Dickens described continue almost unchanged today in many parts of the world. The only difference is that today employment of children is confined(limited)to small industries and family businesses, such as hotels, restaurants and particularly farms, rather than to large factories.
Girls suffer more from child labor practices than boys. Many of them are forced to start work when they are only ten years old. Although the work they are given to do is often light, it is often harmful to the health. Recently, children as young as six years were found to be working in Asian factories, and the children were working from eight to fourteen hours a day in overcrowded and unhealthy working conditions. Sometimes a whole family group is employed, with the payment going to a parent or older relative. The children not only receive nothing or very little for their long hours of work, but also they are prevented from attending school. Therefore, when they become older they are unable to do any other kind of work.
The solution to the problem of child labor is clearly better laws to protect young children, greater supervision(监督)of industry and heavier fines for those who break the laws. Only in this way can young boys and girls be allowed to enjoy the most valuable time of their lives—childhood.

As the longer life and rapid decrease in the laborage population are expected, extending the retirement age(推迟退休年龄) is a wise choice for the government. This is why at the Third Plenum (全会) of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (中国共产党十八届三中全会)it was agreed that there should be a study on the subject.
It is undoubtedly necessary for the government to adjust its policies to meet the challenge of an increasingly aging society. According to the government, China’s senior citizens above the age of 60 will reach 200 million, about 14.8 percent of the population, by the end of this year, and the figure is expected to grow to 248 million by the year of 2020 and more than 400 million by 2050, when they will account for 30 percent of the population. Meanwhile, extending the retirement age will result in several benefits — slowing the rapid increase of the retired, reducing the rapid decline in experienced workers and keeping the laborage population at a considerable size for stable economic development.
However, before the policy is drawn up there will need to be thorough research, so there can be careful consideration of the interests of all parties to make sure that the new policy does not harm the interests of workers in different jobs.
There are 112 million workers who do heavy physical labor and may not be willing to put off their retirement to a later age. And the opinions of government employees and other whitecollar workers will also need to be listened to before a policy is introduced to extend their retirement to a later age.
No doubt it will be impossible to please all, but it should be possible to make the policy acceptable to the most. Anyway, any extensions that will hopefully help reduce the negative influences of our increasingly aging society also need to be fair.
1.The text mainly tells us________.
A. China is going to enter an aging society
B. All people agree to accept the policy
C. Extending the retirement age will bring about multiple benefits
D. China has planned to extend the retirement age
2.Which of the following is TRUE?
A. China’s old people above the age of 50 will be about 14.8 percent of the population.
B. Extending the retirement age may contribute to the economic development of China.
C. Extending the retirement age may reduce the experienced workers.
D. There will be about 248 million elders by 2050.
3.What can be inferred from the text?
A. All the workers will be pleased with the policy.
B. The whitecollar workers go against the policy.
C. There can be many difficulties in extending the retirement age.
D. The government should please all so as to give up the policy.

Webber is a labor economist. His latest research offers guidance on how to keep students on target to earn a degree from a college or university. Among his findings: It is important, whenever possible, for college students to complete their degree program in four years. Also, getting a part-time job is probably a good thing to help finance a college education. But too much time spent working on a job makes it less likely the student will graduate.
One thing, Webber said, is financial aid that helps many students pay for college. Scholarships and other assistance generally stop after four years. So the cost of each additional year in school is likely to come almost entirely from the student and/or parents.
But there are other reasons why taking more than four years is a problem, as Webber notes. It’s because life gets in the way, other things happen. He means the longer you stay in college, the more likely that some unexpected event will affect your studies. It could be a loved one getting sick, a parent losing a job, or the student running out of money for college.
Only about four in 10 graduated within four years. It is also important that students have enough time to complete their college classes, Webber added. His research suggests part-time work of 15 hours or less will not cause harm to the student’s scholastic performance. But his research shows students who work 20 hours or more a week are about 15 percent less likely to graduate on time, or to graduate at all.
His belief is that students active in college athletic programs would face the same problem. It is common, he said, for student athletes to spend 20 hours or more for training, travel and to compete against athletes or teams from other schools.
1.What is the disadvantage if your college education lasts too long?
A. You have to work longer to pay the fee.
B. You’ll have a heavier economic burden.
C. No one will support you with money.
D. The cost will be too high to afford.
2.Which matches Webberr’s opinion about college education?
A. No pains, no gains. B. Every coin has two sides.
C. A long delay may cause trouble. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
3.To graduate from college on time, Webber suggested ________.
A. devoting enough time to studies. B. earning enough money to pay.
C. gaining rich work experience. D. giving up part-time work.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Complete Your College, the Sooner the Better.
B. It Is No Mistake to Study Part-time at College.
C. Study Is More Important Than Part-time Jobs.
D. Key to Success, Finishing College in 4 Years.

We live in a technological society where most goods are mass-produced by unskilled labor. Because of this, most people think that craft no longer exists.
One of the ways these people wrongly support their view is by pointing to 100-year-old homes which are still solid, and arguing that it is the craftsmanship that is responsible for their durability, “Homes in those days were well-built.” they say. No doubt these homes were well-built, but what these people have done is mix up the quality of material used in the house with the quality of the craftsmanship.
Homes today could be built to last just as long as those old homes if people were willing or able to pay the price. For example, most people can no longer afford solid oak stairways, although they were once fairly common in older homes. Nor can they afford the high labor cost of employing a carpenter to build the stairway. Yet if someone can pay the high cost, there are still plenty of carpenters around able to make those stairway. And not only would these carpenters know how to build them, they would probably do a better job than carpenters of old.
One thing the modern carpenter has which enables him to do a better job is much more advanced tools. Such tools as laser beams and power planes help them lay out a house better and make more precision cuts on the wood. Also, it is not uncommon any more to find carpenters with college degrees and carpenters with a sold knowledge of mathematics, which would enable them to deal with more difficult house designs.
The problem of modern quality, then, really boils down to the problem of material, for the modern carpenter is just as able to produce craftsmanship as the carpenter of fifty yeas ago, but only if given proper material.
1.Compared with the carpenters in the past, modern carpenters are ________ .
A. more learned B. more successful
C. more imaginative D. more hardworking
2.What does the underlined word “they” (paragraph 2) refer to?
A. Carpenters who are fond of oak stairways.
B. People who think highly of carpenters of old.
C. Carpenters who have college degrees.
D. People who think that modern material is of low quality.
3.What dose the third paragraph mainly discuss?
A. People in the past preferred to use oak to build stairways.
B. It is now expensive to employ a carpenter.
C. Good carpenters still exist in modern times.
D. Modern houses last as long as the old ones.
4.What would be the best title for the text?
A. Carpenters Today and Yesterday
B. Craft, Back to Life?
C. History of Craftsmanship
D. Is Craft Dead?

Last year, around Labor Day, I read a “Happy Ad” in our local newspaper. There was a lady in a local nursing home for the aged, who was celebrating her 90th birthday and her family wanted everyone to know about it.
