There have been big changes in the attitudes of most parents over the last few years. Physical punishment is banned(被禁止) in schools in most countries, and in many countries, there are moves to ban all physical punishment of children even at home. However, many parents still believe that they have the right to use some physical punishments to deal with certain misbehavior at certain ages.
It’s easy to find reasons to allow some physical punishments. One issue is that many parents find it very difficult to give up physical punishment completely. Parents argue that this was the way they were brought up and that it didn’t do any harm to them. They believe that for the child’s sake they have the right to discipline (惩罚) the child in any way they consider fit, including using some physical punishments. The other one is that physical punishment can be quick and effective. There is not much point reasoning with a screaming child in the supermarket.
However, there are several reasons why we should stop using physical punishment. One point is that most parents are not trained to deal with misbehaving children. They don’t have enough resources or choices to handle the situation. As a result, they immediately react by hitting the child even if there are other solutions to the problem. Another point is that unless people are challenged or forced to change their belief, they may keep following negative habits. An example is seat belt use — now most people wear seat belts without thinking, while years ago the idea of using seat belts was strange to most people. In the same way, banning physical punishment will force people to change their habits.
In conclusion, parents have to change some of their belief and ideas about how children should be raised. It is possible to avoid the use of physical force, and doing so will help us move closer to the dream of removing violence from our society.

A.they are disappointed with their children
B.they don’t want to hurt their children badly
C.they were brought up just in the same way
D.they don’t know what to do with their children
3.The author gives the example of using seat belts in order to show ________.
A.most people are used to wearing seat belts
B.people won’t change their old habits unless forced
C.seat belts are really very necessary and useful
D.it’s not difficult to change some negative habits
4.The main purpose of the author in writing this passage is to ________.
A.talk about a ban on using physical punishment

Over the last few years, nutritional trends have grown in numbers, as more and more people are becoming aware of the positive advantages that a healthy and balanced diet can have. So it should be no surprise that the phrase “clean eating” has been added to the Collins Dictionary. 1.
“Clean eating” is the trend that became popular over the Internet, especially among health and fitness fans. It is a type of diet where people avoid processed (加工过的) foods, such as bacon and white sugar. 2. No chemicals are used while growing organic foods, so they are kept in their natural state and are considered “clean”. Above all, “clean eating” encourages not only a more conscious type of eating, but also a lasting change in lifestyle, such as regular exercise.

There has been a large increase in the number of natural disasters over the past few years, and it is believed that global warming and climate change could cause even more disasters in thefuture. Some of the world’s leading cities are facing disasters like floods and heat waves.
London
London’s flood defences are getting older. Since 1982, the Thames Barrier(水闸)has protected the city from the threat (威胁)of flooding, but it was only designed to last until 2030 and close once every two or three years. About 31 years later the barrier now closes five or six times a year and according to Environment Agency predictions, by 2050 the barrier will be closed on almost every tide if the problem is not solved
There are 26 underground stations, 400 schools, 16 hospitals, an airport and 80 billion worth of property(财产)in London’s flood risk area, so large scale flooding would be disastrous.
Paris
Over a six week period in July and August 2003, more than 1 1,400—mainly elderly people—died in France from dehydration(脱水)and extremely high body temperature in a deadly heat wave. Heat waves of similar intensity(强度)are expected every seven years by 2050, so what can be done to make sure such a disaster does not happen again?
One solution is to have air-conditioners installed(安装)in elderly care homes. But this is considered a short-term solution, as the increase in demand for electricity also increases carbon emissions(排放).
In Paris the local authorities are encouraging architects to design new types of buildings such as the building “Flower Tower,” which uses a covering of bamboo to act as a natural air-conditioner.
Shanghai
Shanghai is the fastest growing city on Earth. It has a population of 18 million and is only 4 meters above sea level. Sea levels are predicted to rise by 20 cm within the next century.
About 250,000 people move to Shanghai every year in search of work, placing extra demands on energy consumption(消耗). China depends heavily on coal—fired power stations, but these emissions increase temperatures and, in turn, warmer seas increase the risk of typhoons.
1.What problem should be settled now in London?
A. How to protect the city’s property
B. Where to build its flood defences
C. How to use the Thames Barrier to protect the city
D. How to improve the function of the old flood defences
2.Which of the following measures can’t solve the heat wave disaster in Paris?
A. Putting up new types of buildings with a covering of bamboo.
B. Having air-conditioners installed in elderly care homes.
C. Forbidding the city to build “Flower Tower”.
D. Encouraging architects to design new types of buildings.
3.The major threats to Shanghai are __________.
A. increasing population and coal-fired power stations
B. rising sea levels and typhoons
C. extremely high temperature and rising sea levels
D. extra demands on energy consumption and typhoons
4.The purpose of the passage is __________.
A. to tell us how to protect the big cities
B. to give advice on how to defend natural disasters
C. to explain what causes flood and heat waves
D. to warn us of the increasing natural disasters in big cities

The US film industry may have generated profits somewhere in the region of $40 billion last year, but it seems Hollywood still has plenty of work to do if wants to compete with the most popular American institution: the public library.
Yes, according to a recent Gallup poll (民意调查), which was the first such survey since 2001, visiting the local library remains by far the most common cultural activity American join in. As reported earlier today by Justin McCarthy:
“Visiting the library remains the most common cultural activity American join in, by far. The average 10.5 trips to the library US adults report taking in 2019 exceeds their participation in eight other common leisure activities. Americans attend live music or theatrical events and visit national or historic parks roughly four times a year on average and visit museums and gambling casinos (赌场) 2.5 times annually. Trips to amusement or theme parks (1.5) and zoos (0.9) are the least common on activities among this list.”
The results of the Gallup poll have been broken down in a range of different ways, all of which you can peruse (研读) at your leisure, but two of the more interesting, though unsurprising, findings are that women report visiting the library nearly twice as frequently as men do, and that libraries are visited most by adults in low-income households and least by adults in high-income households.
Congratulations to all you librarians out there; keep fighting the good fight. Pour one out for the zookeepers, though; it appears the zookeepers may be jealous and feel it not worth staying at the zoo.

Over the past few years, there has been a big increase in the number of people sharing information online. In this article, we will learn about some positive reasons for people to share information online.
94% of those surveyed by The New York Times said they put a lot of thought into how the content they are sharing will be beneficial to others. We often share information with our friends in the office or at home to educate, entertain, or pleasantly surprise them. This is also true while sharing information online. If you look at the Facebook wall posts of your friends, you will realize that most of their updates are usually famous quotes(引述), entertaining videos, humorous images, funny jokes, etc.
A lot of people share information online to picture their true self to the outside world. Some people, especially those who are shy and not comfortable talking about their areas of interest in the presence of others, find it extremely convenient to share that information online with others.
According to the study, 78% of the people said they shared information online because it helps them develop better relationships. Today, people are so busy that they do not have the time to meet each other personally. A lot of people now “meet” each other online, rather than in places like restaurants and pubs.
Lastly, when we share our thoughts online, we are actively communicating with a large number of people who are a part of the World Wide Web. Sharing information will affect the viewpoint of others, or add to their understanding about the world.
