Quality after-school programs are designed to improve academic performance, decrease youth crimes and other high-risk behaviors, and help young people grow into healthy, successful adults.
The effect of quality after-school programs on academic performance is clear. Studies show that students who take part in such programs show better work habits, higher rates of homework completion, improved grades, and higher scores on achievement tests. They also have fewer absences and are less likely to blame. After-school programs also influence high-risk teen behavior. Various studies show decreased rates of crime, drug-taking, and teen sex among youth who join in well-run after-school programs when compared to similar youth who do not. Finally, after-school programs play an important role in supporting different kinds of fields of development: physical development, mental development and social development. Thus, one can safely say that after-school programming is an effective method to help young people become contributing members of society.
Although there is enough proof from both small and large assessments that after-school programs can make a positive difference, it is important to note that not all programs are equal. First, dosage matters -- young people who attend the most hours over the most years benefit more than members who attend less often or over a shorter period of time. Next, after-school programs make a bigger difference for those students who need help most and have the fewest choices. Finally, program qualities matter. After-school programs work best when they create unique opportunities for youth. They should provide opportunities, skill building meaningful involvement, expression, suggestion, service, and work. Staff characteristics make an important difference in the quality of a program. The adults should treat youth as partners, create safe and fair environment, encourage personalized involvement, and actively create learning opportunities. In short, although after-school programs have a promising future, how they are designed and run matters.

Although the dangers of too little sleep are widely known, new research suggests that people who sleep too much may also suffer the consequences(后果).
Researchers at the University of California in San Diego found that people who sleep 9 or 10 hours each weeknight appear to have more trouble falling and staying asleep, as well as a number of other sleep problems, than people who sleep 8 hours a night. People who slept only 7 hours each night also said they had more trouble in falling asleep and feeling refreshed(恢复体力)after a night’s sleep than 8-hour sleepers.
These findings, which Dr. Daniel Kriple reported in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, shows that people who want to get a good night’s rest may not need to sleep more than 8 hours each night. He added that “it might be a good idea ” for people who sleep more than 8 hours each night to consider reducing the amount of time they spend in bed, but reminded that research is needed to prove this.
Previous studies have shown the hidden dangers of lack of sleep for a long time—for instance, one report showed that people who usually sleep less than 7 hours each night have a higher risk of dying within a fixed period than people who sleep more.
For the current report, Kripke reviewed the responses of 1,004 adults to sleep questionnaires (问卷), in which participants(参与者) indicated how much they slept during the week and whether they experienced any sleep problems. Sleep problems included waking in the middle of the night, waking up early in the morning and being unable to fall back to sleep, and feeling tired with day-to-day functioning(运转).
Kripke found that people who slept between 9 and 10 hours each night most probably report experiencing each sleep problem than people who slept 8 hours. In an interview, Kripke noted that longer sleepers may struggle to get rest at night simply because they spend too much time in bed. As evidence, he added that one way to deal with insomnia(失眠)is to spend less time in bed. “It means that if a person spends too long a time in bed, then they’ll spend a higher percentage of time awake,” he said.

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how.
1). Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you can have to do. After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time. First time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time fro entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
2). Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room. Free from everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
3). Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what your teachers say.
4). Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teachers mentioned in class. If you want to know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material in advance. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
5). Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

During my childhood many years ago, a hero was pictured in my mind as the strong and the powerful, such as a superman, but as time goes by and my knowledge grows wider, the definition of a hero changes from superman to Jesus Christ. In my opinion, a hero should have a modest characteristic, treat others with love and have the ability to change the world.
Heroes are also ordinary men but they do extraordinary things for others out of the vast love they have in heroes’ heart. When God created the world, God gave everyone a lovely heart for a chance to become a hero. All people need to do is to spare out the love to become heroes, but this world only has not so many heroes.
Who doesn’t like to give orders to other people? Who likes to be a servant treated like a dog? Everyone wants to get to a higher position. The employee wants to be a manager. The senator(参议员) wants to be the president. The higher status will have the stronger power. No one will refuse to own the driver seat.So a hero must have the ability to be in the rank(职位).The hero doesn't have to take the power, but to get to a higher rank is one way to get ability of changing the world. If the hero can not change the world, he is only a normal man with a modest characteristic and kind love.Besides, a hero should be ready to help others.
Therefore, being a hero isn't at all an easy job.Not everyone can be a hero. The person must not only make a difference but also try to love others. The both done, the person can become a true hero.

Are you tired of the same old schedule on Mother’s Day? Well, here are some new ideas to help you enjoy that special day with your mother.
While it seems almost a tradition to take your mother out for dinner on Mother’s Day, perhaps this year you could try something else. You could invite her to a restaurant before or after the actual day. This way you don’t have to fight the crowds, and the prices will be lower.
Take your mother out for a picnic lunch if the weather is nice. You and she can enjoy the cool breeze under the shade of a tree while having a nice meal that you have made for her. Be sure to pack some of her favorite foods.
Another idea would be to invite your mother to go bowling(打保龄球). Even if she has never bowled in her life, trying something new is always interesting.
You could treat her to a movie she is dying to see, and make sure you buy her all the popcorn and candies she can eat. If you are a male, the chances are you won’t like the movie she wants to see, so instead you could go to the mall and get your picture taken with your mother, which she can proudly display in her house.
Take her to a spa on Mother’s Day. She has been working so hard and needs a way to release her stress.
If she doesn’t want to go to a spa, buy her special soaps and oils so she can relax herself in her own tub. There are various types of soaps and oils with delicious flavors available. You could also buy her some scented (芬芳的) candles that she could light by her tub to make the atmosphere peaceful.
No matter what you choose, make sure you do something special for the woman who took care of you for so long.

Recently 3 kinds of foods are very popular in the US.
Convenience Foods
Instead of buying only fresh foods, Americans buy many more convenience foods. These are foods which are ready partly or completely prepared. There are also many canned convenience foods, such as soups and vegetables.
Convenience foods save time and trouble. They are popular with people who are busy or who don't like cuisine or washing dishes. But they often cost more money than fresh, unprepared foods and may contain man-made additives. Also they don't taste as good as home cooked foods.
Health Foods
In the 1960s, a "back-to-the earth" movement was started by young people in the US. The movement was a reaction against the harmful effects of technology. Many people now prefer natural and organic foods to the prepared foods sold in food stores.
Diet Foods
These, days Americans are more and more concerned with their weight. American supermarkets sell a variety of diet foods as diet soft drinks, diet candy, and diet salad dressings. Each year dozens of new diets are popularized. However, some of the diet foods are unbelievable. There are tricks in their advertisements.

Snowboarding(滑板滑雪) became a Winter Olympic event in 1998 but many people still don’t think it’s a “real” sport. I asked ten of my friends about this and eight of them said it shouldn’t be an Olympic event. Snowboarders must be skilful and strong, just like other athletes(运动员), and they train just as hard. So, why do people have this opinion?
Well, I think there are a few reasons. First of all, snowboarders believe that having fun is part of the sport. Maybe people think they’re enjoying themselves too much. I guess they feel that “real” sports should look like hard work. Secondly, snowboarders believe it’s of importance to show their personal style. They like to be dressed in modern clothes and often have interesting haircuts. In some people’s eyes, a well-trained athlete just doesn’t wear a funny hat or a nose-ring. Thirdly, it’s a new sport and many people haven’t tried it yet. This might make them think it’s easy, when, in fact, it’s not. Snowboarding is just as difficult, if not more difficult, than skiing.
Whatever the reasons, I think it’s time we accept that having fun doesn’t mean you’re lazy and that someone with blue hair can be a champion(冠军).
Title | Is Snowboarding A 76 Sport? |

Wealthy Chinese do not have a good reputation(=fame), a survey by China Youth Daily and Sina.com has found.
The poll(民意调查), conducted last week, showed about 70 percent of 3,990 interviewees believe the well-off are immoral and not worthy of respect. Only 4 percent thought rich people are good, the survey said.
For the rich, to become popular, they need to do three things, the survey suggested.
First, they need to have a sense of social responsibility. Second, they need to be self -disciplined, and third, they need to have a caring heart.
The number of people who make at least $50,000 a year increases by 15 percent a year and, according to the China Economic Times, the country now has 1.5 million rich people.
The China Youth Daily and Sina.com survey found interviewees questioned how the rich became rich in the first place.
“Some rich people are thought to have accumulated(积累) their wealth through illegal means, such as bribery,” said a post-graduate student at the Communication University of China.
Even so, the survey found wealthy people who abide by(遵守) the law, have a sense of social responsibility and a caring heart, are respected.
The poll showed about 60 percent thought these kinds of wealthy people were worthy of respect.
The survey suggested many voters were much better disposed(怀有好感的)toward rich people from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Western economies——rather than the mainland.
Hong Kong property tycoon(大亨) Li Ka-shing was most highly regarded, followed by Bill Gates, mainland property tycoon Wang Shi and basketball player Yao Ming.
“Rich people on the mainland invest too little in charity and gain too much,” a student from Beijing Sports University said.
Yu Guoming, a professor at Renmin University of China, called on the heads of Chinese companies to think and invest in a long-term way. “Social responsibility is not only about charity, it also connects the company with the government and the public.”

It was the perfect weather for leaf watching, and my housemate Julie and I meant to spend the weekend with our friends in the North Georgia Mountains.
“Don’t you want to come along?” Julie asked her 15-year-old son, Mark. “Enjoy the leaves by yourselves,” he told her. “I’ll be fine staying home by myself.”
Julie and I drove there in my car after work on Friday. On Saturday morning we hiked along the mountainside and enjoyed the beautiful colors. All of a sudden, I had terrible feeling. “Go home,” a voice seemed to urge me. I couldn’t explain it, but I didn’t want to be there anymore. I just wanted to go home. “Carol, calm down. You’re being silly,” Julie said. But the urge just got stronger.
“I’ve got to leave,” I said. “If you want to stay, you can get a ride back with anyone else tomorrow.”
Julie stood up. “No, I’ll go with you,” she said. We almost didn’t talk during the two-hour trip back. I felt very guilty.
Finally, we reached home. The lights were on in the house, but something was strange. The windows seemed to be fogged up. Julie opened the door and smoke poured out. “Mark!” she shouted. “Mark!” We rushed inside and found him asleep on the sofa. Shaking him awake, Julie grabbed him. I grabbed the source of the smoke—a pillow too close to the fireplace. I then took it outside and threw water on it. Mark had built a fire to keep warm, and some ember(灰烬) had flown out. The whole house could have gone up if we hadn’t gotten there just then!
