Amelia Lee is an astronaut who will soon be leaving for Mars. Conard Spark interviewed her for Space Tomorrow magazine.
Conrad: Amelia, you’ll be leaving for Mars next Friday. How are the preparations going?
Amelia: Very well. We’ve done years of training to get ready for this journey.
Conrad: How many people are in the crew?
Amelia: There are five of us. The journey to Mars will take nine months, so the five of us will be working and living together in our spaceship for all of that time.
Conrad: That’s a long time!
Amelia: Yes, it is, and in our training, we’ve learnt how to keep our bodies and minds healthy for that length of time. When we arrive on Mars, we’ll meet the people who are living in the Mars Colony.
Conrad: How long will you stay on Mars?
Amelia: We’ll stay there for a year and a half. We’ll do scientific experiments there, and we’ll explore the area around the colony. Then we’ll return to Earth. That will take nine months, too.
Conrad: So, next week, you’ll be saying good bye to your family and friends for three years!
Amelia: Yes. That will be sad, but we all agree that I’m doing a good thing.
Conrad: How do you think you’ll feel next Friday? Will you be nervous?
Amelia: Well, I might feel a little nervous. But mostly I’ll be concentrating on the things I have to do. I have to make sure everything is safe and the spaceship is working properly.
Conrad: I wish you good luck and safe travels.
