Out with the old, in with the new (旧的不去,新的不来). It's time to buy some new, fashionable clothes for the winter. But what do you do with your old clothes?
In the past, clothes were passed down to younger brothers or sisters. But now most of us are only children. The economy has developed and people are buying more clothes.
Every year in China, people throw away about 26 million tons of old clothes, according to the China Association of Resource Comprehensive Utilization (中国资源综合利用协会). Most of them are buried (填埋) or burned (焚烧) as waste. It's a huge waste of energy.
"In many countries, charity shops collect and resell second-hand clothes," Zhao Guoliang, a professor at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, told Beijing Morning Post. "It's the best solution to this problem."
In some countries, it can be fashionable to shop for used clothes at charity shops like Oxfam. British singer Victoria Beckham has said she buys from Oxfam. "It's amazing to see what people throw out and it's good to help such a great place," she told Heat magazine.
Recycling clothes is catching up in China. Fashion brand H&M is asking people to put their old clothes into special boxes in their 45 stores in China. Some of the clothes will be resold after being cleaned. Some will be used to make other things, such as toys or cloth rags.

My husband had just bought a new washing machine for me. I decided to use it and I washed a lot of things.
Everything worked well, but I found one of my husband’s socks missing. I looked everywhere for it, but I couldn’t find it anywhere.
The next morning, I got ready for school as usual. When the bell rang, the students came in. I greeted them first and then told them what we were going to do that day. When I turned around to write on the blackboard, the class broke out a roar! They laughed and laughed. They laughed so much, in fact, that I was afraid the headmaster would be into seeing all this.
I asked the class to stop, but the more I talked, the more they laughed. I decided to pay no attention to them and I continued to write on the blackboard. When I did this, they roared even more.
Finally, the teacher who had the room next to mine came in to see what all the laughter was about. When he came in, he started laughing, too!
“Good heavens,” I said. “Will someone please tell me what is so funny?’
“Oh, God,” said the teacher. “You have a brown sock to the back of your skirt!”
So that’s how I found my husband’s missing sock.
“Oh, well,” I said to the class. “Let’s just say you have had an unforgettable lesson on static electricity.”
1.What happened when the writer turned around to write on the blackboard?
A. The class roared with anger.
B. There was a loud noise outside the room.
C. Another teacher came in.
D. The class began to laugh loudly.
2.Why couldn’t she find one of her husband’s socks?
A. Because some students had hidden it.
B. Because she never expected that it would stick to her skirt.
C. Because she had left it in the classroom.
D. Because her husband had taken it away.
3.Why did the teacher from the next room laugh?
A. Because the whole class laughed.
B. Because he saw the writer fooled by the class.
C. Because he saw some of the students making faces.
D. Because he found a sock on the back of the writer’s skirt.
4.Which of the following statements is WRONG?
A. The writer’s husband had just bought a new washing machine.
B. The writer found one of her husband’s socks missing.
C. The students told her about the laughing.
D. She was afraid of being seen by the headmaster.

Why do some clothes fit us and some don’t? It became clear to Louise Wannier in a fashion design class.” We were learning to draw body proportions (比例) just from one model,” Wannier, 53, says. “Since women come in all sizes and shapes, I asked the teacher when we would learn about other body proportions. And she said, ‘We don’t. There are 5,000 designers, and each one designs only for his own model.’”
Suddenly, Wannier understood why fitting rooms(试衣间) everywhere are full of frustrated women. “I knew right then that there was a business in helping women quickly find clothes for their shape and that it needed to be online.”
Wannier, who had already started two successful technology companies, rushed home to begin working on the idea. Two years later, in October 2006, she set up myshape.com. Customers go online to enter their measurements and are given one of seven body types based on their body proportions.
Seeing models of various shapes and sizes, many businessmen were impressed with Wannier’s idea and put up $32 million, helping her develop the business plan.
Once Wannier set up an online survey for potential customers. Within 24 hours, she got over 700 responses (响应) and a third of them signed up. “We were astonished," recalls Wannier. "It made us believe there was really a demand.”
Today, with 700,000 customers and 300 designers, the site has proved its usefulness. "For some weeks," says Wannier, "we get 100-percent customer satisfaction. And designers are very happy: they get a new channel to sell their products and more customers."
While My Shape continues to sign up customers and designers, the company isn’t yet profitable (盈利的). “We just get one percent of the price of the clothes," says Wannier. "In order to make money, we have to attract more customers that will come back again and again.”
