A job is more than a job, especially to the old. “It’s not the money that matters, but the sense of self-worth,” 56-year-old Cheng Wonlan said. So, every day Ms Cheng carries a bag of parcels, letters and documents and does her rounds in North Point. She’s a courier(快递员).
Five years ago, Ms Cheng was a nurse at a private clinic. She had worked there for 30 years but became jobless when the doctor moved away. It was difficult for her to find another job as a nurse. “People do not trust my ability when they learn how old I am,” she said. After two years of searching, she eventually found another nursing job. But then after two years, she quit. Why?
“My colleagues were young and they didn’t understand me because of my age. They often asked me, ‘You are so old. What are you working for?’ I was very unhappy,” she said. When the rest of her family left for work, she was lonely and bored at home. Then her neighbours told her about Employees’ Retraining Board offering retraining courses for older people. These courses are specifically designed to encourage the older people back to work.
“I was interested in courier work. I didn’t think my age was a barrier(障碍) because I was fit,” she said. Upon graduating, Ms Cheng was offered a job by a company. But then Ms Cheng was faced with a conflict: she was caught between honour and employment. “I felt embarrassed about carrying and delivering letters and parcels,” she said. It took Ms Cheng 24 hours to make up her mind: there was nothing wrong or embarrassing about doing the job. So she went off to work as a courier.
Ms Cheng’s employer, Anthony Chong, is delighted with her responsible attitude and said, “I hire older people because they are able and reliable. Age is not an important factor but attitude is. Many old people will not run from difficulties but the young ones will.”

Did you know that money is not worth the paper it is printed on? Money is really just a symbol. 1.
Long ago, people did not use money. They made or grew food, clothes, and other things they needed. Later, people started trading. They would trade what they made to someone else in order to get different foods and goods. To trade like this is to barter(物物交换).
The barter system was a good system. Bakers could trade bread for wheat. Weavers could trade cloth for meat. Trading not just let people work at certain jobs. 2.
But one problem with bartering was that not everyone agreed on prices. People had to work out a price each time they wanted to trade. Another problem was that the goods might be too heavy to carry. What if the cow farmer wanted to trade a cow for a horse with the horse farmer? They would have to carry their animals with them. 3. What if the cow farmer wanted to trade a cow for a chicken? A cow is worth more than a chicken. The farmer should get “change.” But how can you make change from a cow?
4. People used to use all kinds of small things for money. They used shells, beads, feathers, seeds, and even salt. A group of people would decide the worth of a kind of shell. Other kinds of shells would be worth more or less. Then people had money that was worth a certain amount. It was easy to carry. It was easy to make change.
With time going by, we finally have the money that we use today. 5.
A. This is where money comes in.
B. That means it stands for something else.
C. They made clothes from wool from their sheep.
D. Bartering did not have a way to make change, either.
E. It also gave people a way to buy things they needed.
F. With money, we don’t have to travel with chickens, cows, or clay pots!
G. When people traded, they no longer had to make everything they needed.

Yoga(瑜伽)is an ancient practice that helps create a sense of union body, mind, and spirit. It brings us balance. After a long time of practicing yoga, you no longer just practice it — you love it.
Yoga becomes part of your physical life. Your body grows stronger, more toned(有弹性的), and more flexible as you move from one pose to another. I spent a week in Mexico at a yoga retreat, and it was the first vacation on which I lost weight. “Rather than building muscles, yoga builds muscle tone,”says Shakta Kaur Khalsa, author of KISS Guide to Yoga. “Because yoga helps maintain a balanced metabolism(新陈代谢), and it also helps to control weight.Additionally, yoga stretches muscles lengthwise, causing fat around the cells disappear, thus losing weight.”
I do yoga poses throughout the day. After hours at my computer, I stretch my stiff shoulders and arms. When I need an increase in energy, I do energizing poses. When I am feeling exhausted at the end of the day, I do restorative(恢复体力的)poses.
Yoga becomes part of your mental life. Yoga teaches you to focus on breathing while you hold the poses. This attention to breath is calming; it dissolves(使消除)stress and anxiety. I use yogic breathing on the tennis court, in the dentist’s chair, and when I’m stuck in traffic.
You should always leave a yoga practice feeling energized, but not tired. If you feel tired after yoga,it means you spent the time “fighting” yourself, trying to force yourself into poses. In yoga, you “surrender” to the poses by letting go of the tension.
1.According to the second paragraph, yoga can help people ___.
A. lose weight B. make friends
C. be flexible in thinking D. grow tall
2.Why does a person feel tired after yoga?
A. Because when practicing yoga, people will consume a lot of energy.
B. Because he or she surrenders to the poses by letting go of the tension.
C. Because he o she doesn’t do yoga poses naturally.
D. Because yoga doesn’t benefit all the people.
3.What would be the best title for this passage?
A. What’s yoga? B. The benefits of yoga.
C. How do I do yoga poses? D. The varieties of yoga.
4.What will be talked about if this passage continues?
A. The disadvantages of yoga.
B. Yoga is becoming popular all over the world.
C. Encouraging people to do yoga.
D. Yoga is becoming part of your spiritual life.

New research proves it wrong that the loss of one sense may sharpen other senses. A new study from the University of Montreal found that blind people have no sharper sense of smell than the sighted. The loss of sight simply makes blind people pay more attention to how they sense smells, the researchers said.
“If you enter a room in which coffee is boiling, you will quickly look for the coffee machine. However, for a blind person, he or she will only have the smell of coffee as information,” said a researcher, Mathilde Beaulieu-Lefebvre.
“There is a saying that blind people have better smell than the sighted. We are proving it wrong,” said Maurice Ptito, a professor at the University of Montreal. “However, the blind do set themselves apart as they are somewhat better than the sighted at deciding what direction a sound is coming from.”
It is further found that the blind use a certain part of the brain more than the sighted when they smell. They also use the part which is normally used for sight. “That’s interesting because it means that part of the brain is reorganized and used in a new way,” said Ptito.
The research on the sense of smell could lead to new applications that are likely to help guide blind people in their surroundings.
1.How do blind people know coffee is boiling?
A. By looking for the coffee machine. B. By using the sense of smell.
