I graduated from college recently and moved to Washington by myself. While I was in college, it was really easy to meet new people. But "out in the real world", I was finding it really hard. I live in a big city, and it seems like everyone around me is busy or already has all the friends they want. I was feeling so discouraged(沮丧的)and I didn't know what to do, so I called my sister for some advice.
My sister is five years older than I am, so she's been through all this already. She's been helping me with my problems all my life. When I explained my problem, she understood completely. She said, "Why don't you try meeting people online?"
"Online? Are you kidding?" I asked. "A friend of mine chatted with a guy online, and when she finally met him face to face, he was nothing like what he said."
My sister laughed. "You don't have to look for dates online," she said. "But you can find other people like you—people who have just moved to town and want to make some new friends. When I first moved to New York after college, I found a book club and a football team online. I met a lot of people that way."
"But you don't even like football!" I said.
"I know," she replied. "But that didn't matter. I still bad a lot of fun. You played volleyball in college. Why don't you look for a volleyball team to join? Or an art class?"
"Yeah! I saw a website about volunteering the other day." I said. "I could volunteer for an organization here in Washington. I bet I could meet a lot of really nice people that way."
"Good idea!" my sister answered excitedly. "Hey, you might even meet the perfect guy."
"OK, now you're starting to sound like Mom," I said. "Thanks a lot for the advice. I'm going online right now. I'll let you know what happens. Will you be home tonight?"
"No, but I'll be here all day tomorrow, so give me a call," my sister replied. "Good luck!"

If not, I will lose my jobs.” At the same time, Lucy’s seventy-year-old parents, who live in New York, are taking an art history class online. “We love this subject,” says her father, “and we learn it to enjoy ourselves. Half a year before graduation from college, my son began to seek a job. Due to the financial crisis, fewer companies would like to employ new staff. My son targeted a company that was going to hire only one person while there were more than twenty people filling their resumes.
After the interview, there would only be 3 who could enter the final round, which would later decide one person to be employed. Everything seemed to go quite well and my son passed the first round and entered the final round in a week.
On the day of the final interview, my son and other two candidates arrived at the interview place on time, waiting for the test. Unexpectedly, the interview was unbelievably simple. The interviewer only said to them, all of you are very super. Please go home and wait for our notice. We will tell you the result in 3 days. Good luck to all of you!" On the morning of the third day, my son received a text from the company shortly after breakfast that he was not employed. We all felt very disappointed.
In nightfall that day, my son suddenly told me excitedly on the phone, "Da, I have been employed!" Greatly surprised, I could not wait to ask him, "What's the whole matter?" My son told me that he received another text saying that he was employed. Actually, the first text sent to my son was also part of the test in the interview. Three men received the same text this morning and only my son’s reply was "Thank you." While the others said "Goodbye.".
Only then did I know that my son's "hope" came in that way. That is, when you feel disappointed, do not forget to say "Thank you." to the one who disappoints you. Peter was getting ready to graduate from the college. He loved a beautiful sports car for many months, and knew his father could well afford it for him. He told his father all that he wanted.
As the graduation day was coming near, Peter had got nothing from his father. On the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his study. He told his son how proud he was to have such a good son, and told how much he loved him. Then he gave his son a beautiful gift box. He opened the box, finding a lovely book, a Bible(圣经), with the young man’s name in it. Angrily he raised his voice to his father and said, “With all your money you give me a Bible?” He then ran out of the house, leaving the Bible.
Many years later, Peter was very successful in business. He had a beautiful house and a wonderful family. Realizing his father was old, he thought he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Unfortunately, he was told that his father had died.
When he reached his father’s house, he began to take care of his father’s papers. And then he found the Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened it and began to turn the pages. As he was reading, from the back of the Bible dropped a car key. That was the key to the sports car he wanted so much. Sudden sadness and regret (悔恨)filled his heart.
