Havana is an important city in Cuba, and it is the largest island in the Caribbean. It is one of the oldest cities in Latin America. It is a very cultural city and has lots of beautiful old Spanish buildings. In the 1990s Cuba became the second most popular country in the Caribbean.

In the 16th century, Havana was Spain’s most important city in Latin America. Later, African slaves(奴隶) came to work here. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was one of the richest cities in the West. Ernest Hemingway, the famous US writer, lived here from 1940. After he left Cuba, people transformed his house into a museum, and now many people visit it every year. At the beginning of 1960s, Fidel Castro became president(主席) of Cuba.

Havana was the birthplace of many Afro-cuban dances such as salsa. The music was an exciting mixture of Spanish guitar and African drums. Salsa was once called “Casino” because of the clubs that people danced in. Later, Latin Americans in New York gave it the name “salsa”. Today many people go to Havana to learn salsa and try to dance in the famous clubs.
