When a leafy plant is under attack, it doesn’t sit quietly. Back in 1983,two scientists,Jack Schultz and Ian Baldwin, reported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects send out a particular smell that neighboring plants can get. These chemicals come from the injured parts of the plant and seem to be an alarm. What the plants pump through the air is a mixture of chemicals which are called VOCs for short.
Scientists have found that all kinds of plants give out VOCs when being attacked .It’s a plant’s way of crying out.But is anyone listening?Exactly.Because we can watch the neighbours react.
Some plants release smelly chemicals to keep insects away. But others do double duty .They pump out perfumes designed to attract different insects who are natural enemies to the attackers.Once they arrive, the tables are turned .The attacker who was lunching now becomes lunch.
In study after study,it appears that these chemical conversations help the neighbors .The damage is usually more serious on the first plant, but the neighbors ,relatively speaking ,stay safer because they heard the alarm and knew what to do.
Does this mean that plants talk to each other? Scientists don’t know. Maybe the first plant just made a cry of pain or was sending a message to its own branches, and so, in effect, was talking to itself. Perhaps the neighbors just happened to “overhear” the cry. So information was exchanged, but it wasn’t a true communication.
Charles Darwin, over 150 years ago, imagined a world far busier, noisier and more intimate(亲密的) than the world we can see and hear. Our senses are weak. The world is .
1.Does a leafy plant sit quietly when it is under attack?
2.What does a plant do when it is under attack?
3.How can scientists know that there is someone listening to the crying?
4.What does the author mean by “the tables are turned” in paragraphs 3?
5.From the scientists' studies, can plants protect themselves against insects or really talk to each other?
6.What can be filled in the blank at end of the passage?

Koala Joey
Far away in Australia, a koala sits high in a eucalyptus tree. She grips a branch with the rough pads and sharp claws on her paws. In her pouch (小袋) she hides something special—her baby.
At birth the baby koala, called a joey, does not look like his furry mom. He is pink and bald(无毛的)and as small as a jellybean. Although he cannot see, he moves his legs and crawls. He smells milk and, without any help, starts to feel his way to his mother’s pouch. Five minutes later he slips (滑) inside.
Inside the pouch, the joey drinks his mother’s milk and grows. His eyes open. His ears form, and he hears his mother’s calls. Soon thick fur covers his body. By the time the joey is ready to explore the world, he looks like his mother.
At five months old, the joey peers out of his pouch. He eats a special soft food from his mother called pap. When the joey eats pap, he gets bacteria(细菌)from his mother’s stomach in his tummy too. He will need the bacteria to eat eucalyptus leaves, like grownup koalas do.
In another month, the joey leaves the pouch for the first time. He clings(贴着)to his mother’s belly while she climbs in the treetops. By the time he is eight months old, the joey no longer fits in his mother’s pouch. But he still drinks her milk.
Now, for a few hours each night, the joey climbs on his mother’s back for a ride. While riding piggyback, he reaches for eucalyptus leaves. Just like mom, he nips (咬) off leaves and chews them. The leaves have plenty of water in them, so koalas rarely go to the ground for a drink. When the joey is about one year old, his piggyback days are over. Now he climbs to the treetops by himself. On each of his front paws, he has two thumbs opposite his three fingers. He can grip branches and grab leaves.
The young koala spends more and more time away from his mother. He no longer drinks her milk. He dozes (打瞌睡,打盹) alone on tree branches. Soon he will move to another tree and live on his own.

A. eats a food called pap
B. rides on his mother’s back
C. sleeps on tree branches
D. clings to his mother’s belly
2.A joey stops drinking its mother’s milk when it is about_______.
A. one year old B. six months old
C. eight months old D. five months old

4.The author most likely wrote this passage to________.

Stay Home Studying
17-year-old Liu Yu was a high school student in China. She planned to go back to school on Feb 17 to prepare for the 2020 college entrance examination(高考). However, the Ministry of Education(教育部)told people in late January that the spring term for all schools would be put off because of the serious disease(疾病)in China. So Liu Yu, like all the others students, had to stay at home.
However, Liu and her classmates didn’t fell behind their plans and began studying full-time again – only from home. It may have become the largest online teaching experiment the country has ever seen.
To go with students’ new learning environment, a “cloud platform(云平台)” was started using on Feb 17. It provided students with education resources(资源) covering all school subjects. But some students had difficulty going to the website or using smart phones. A TV channel by China Education Television started airing classes on Feb 17. So students could have classes and study online or on TV at home.
But the online platform and TV channel don’t just offer school knowledge. Students can also learn how to protect themselves from the disease and psychological(心理的)health during this period, according to the Ministry of Education.
For some students, the chance to study from home has had some unexpected benefits. Yuan Siyi, who lives in Hubei province, used to get up before 6 am on school days, but since starting online courses, she got more hours of sleep every morning. “I like online teaching because I have more freedom at home,” Yuan told TEENS. She began her all-day courses on Feb 3.
However, online teaching and learning has its weaknesses compared to studying in a traditional classroom. “My motivation(动力)to study is stronger when my classmates are around me and all working very hard,” Yuan said.
According to the Ministry of Education, online courses are just a short-time way of learning during the disease. When the new term begins, schools will no longer use online classes instead of classroom teaching.
1.When did Liu Yu plan to go back to school?
2.Did Liu Yu begin her full-time study from home?
3.How did students have classes and study at home?
4.What can students learn except school knowledge during this period?
5.What is Paragraph 5 and 6 mainly about?
