Homesick is a compound word made up of HOME and SICK.You know what each word means on its own, of course. But think about what the words mean when they are used together.Homesick means SICK FOR HOME.
Now think for a minute about SEASICK.If you change the word home in the definition(释义)to the word sea, would the definition fit SEASICK? Seasick means SICK BY THE MOVEMENT ON THE SEA. When you are homesick ,the only place you want to be is at home. When you are seasick, the last place you want to be is at seA.
Have you ever heard of a person being heartsick? Heartsick doesn’t mean that something is wrong with a person’s heart.people are heartsick when they are hurt deep inside and when they feel as if their hearts are broken.
But, on the other hand, we have such compound words as handshake, handstand, and handbag.Perhaps you may write definitions for them.
1.The word SEASICK means“______”.
A. to be eager to go to the sea
B. what has nothing to do with the sea
C. to be sick because of the sea
D. that the sea is terrible
2.When we say a person is heartsick, we mean that________.
A. his heart is sick
B. his heart needs testing
C. he’s sorry at heart
D. he’s terribly disappointed and sad、
3.“The last place you want to be” is_________.
A. where you want to be most
B. where you want to be least
C. where you go the last
D. the last place you go to
4.The definitions of handshake, handstand and handbag are_______.

When you visit America, you will see the word Motel on signs and notice boards. It is made up of “motor” and “hotel” and it is really a hotel for people who arrive by car (how-ever, you don’t need a car to stay at one). You have to pay when you arrive for your room, which usually has a bath. Meals are not provided, but there will certainly be a cafeteria (自助餐馆). Americans eat a lot of salads and sandwiches. Along the main roads there are a lot of motels. Each tries to offer more than next. Some provide television in every bedroom; others have swimming pools; and so on. Motels are especially useful when you are in the country, far from a town or city. You will also find them in the big National Parks.
In these great National Parks, you may meet guests you don’t expect to see. An American friend told me a little story. In the middle of a moonless night she heard strange noises outside her motel window in the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Thinking it might be a thief, she jumped out of bed, opened the door and crept towards a dark shadow(阴影). As she got close, she saw the thief. She was dreadfully frightened: it wasn’t a human thief — it was a big black bear. The bear was turning over some empty tins with its paw, looking for tasty bits of food. My friend decided to leave that particular thief alone!
There are also, of course, places called “rooming houses”, where they receive lodgers (房客). You will see such signs as Tourists or Rooms Rent, and you could try one of these. A word of warning — looking for a room in New York during the tourist season is like looking for gold on the moon!
1.Which of the following is TRUE about motels?
A.You can only find motels in the big National Parks.
B.They are free for people who arrive by car.
C.If you want to stay at a motel, you must have a car.
D.The word “motel” is formed by two words.
2.Which of the following is NOT provided by motels?
A.Baths. B.Swimming pools. C.TV. D.Meals.
3.The underlined word “crept” in the second paragraph probably means “______”.
A.moved slowly B.rushed out C.threw away D.ran fast
4.The second paragraph mainly tells us ______.
A.an interesting story
B.the experience of the author’s friend
C.we may meet animals in the National Parks
D.bears usually look for food at night
5.From the last paragraph, we can learn that in New York during the tourist season ______.
A.tourists can find gold there
B.tourists can have a sweet dream there
C.it is difficult to find a room there
D.there is warning for tourists to New York

Some English words are made up of the same part and have different beginnings and different endings, such as import, export, report and transport. All these words, you can see, have the same "port", which come from the Latin word, meaning "to carry" or "to move" from one place to another. And according to the bit at the beginning, which we call the prefix the meaning changes. "Import" means "to carry in" or "to bring into a country", "export", "ex" means "out of", so this word means "to carry out of the country", "re" means "back", so the "report" means "to tell somebody, to bring back information to somebody", "transport", "trans" means "across" and it means "to carry across one place to another".
Let's look at the following words: supporter, reporter, importer and exporter. You can see that in this case these words are nouns which are made up of the verbs plus a suffix, thus meaning a person who completes the verb. So supporter means somebody who supports. Great Britain is traditionally made up of three parts: England in the south, Scotland in north and Wales in the southwest.
England is the largest and most developed of all the three. Its area, about 130,000 square kilometers, takes up nearly 60% of the whole island. My house is made of wood, glass and stone. It is also made of software.
If you come to visit, you'll probably be surprised when you come in: Someone will give you an electronic PIN to wear. The PIN tells the house who you are and where you are. The house uses this information to give you what you need. When it's dark outside, the PIN turns on the lights near you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them. Music moves with you, too. If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it for you. The music seems to be everywhere, but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings.
Of course, you are also able to want something. There is a home control console (控制台) which is a small machine that turns things on and off around you.
The PIN and the console are new ideas, but they are in fact like many things we have today. If you want to go to a movie, you need a ticket. If I give you the key to my car, you can use my car. The car works for you because you have the key. My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the console.
I believe that in ten years from now, most new houses will have the systems that I've put in my house. The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones I've got.
I like to try new ideas. I know that some of my ideas will work better than others'. But I hope that one day I will stop thinking of these systems as new, and ask myself instead, ”How did I live without them?”
