We all have found memories of taking a few lazy months off after the stress of A-levels. As we draw to the end of an academically and socially packed year, the idea of doing the same again is appealing.
But after graduation, there will be few occasions when we can enjoy such extended holidays, free to do as we wish. So now that summer has arrived, let’s take full advantage. It goes without saying that summer vacations are the perfect time to go traveling, especially if you avoid the pricey school holiday period.
Tickets go up greatly when you turn 26, so make the most of cheaper rates while you’re eligible. Finding a reliable company that won’t cheat you is extremely important, as is discovering a program that appeals to your own interests. There are plenty of websites where you can see other people’s recommendations.
Of course for most of us, money is tight—but to avoid overspending you can combine employment and adventure. Hannah Warn, a psychology student at the University of Winchester, is spending her summer at Camp America, an increasingly popular venture where British students enjoy a good time on a summer camp.
“Being thrown into something where I don’t really know what to expect is exciting.” she says.“It gives me a chance to experience being away from home in a different way.”
Those with a talent for languages might also consider working abroad as an au pair. The work may be challenging, but it’s a chance to involve yourself in a new culture while your employer pays most of the bill.
If you have an idea about the sort of career you’d like, getting work experience is wise. In many careers, graduating with only your degree to show for your three or four years just won’t make it. Send applications off early and to as many places as possible. Make sure you take a well-earned break this summer.

As a teacher we all have those memories of students—we wonder if we were able to teach or reach those students who had a need to get out of their seats every five minutes or so.
I recently received an e-mail from one such student, Paco, Paco’s e-mail brought back memories of one particular class:
It was our high school’s first year of block scheduling our classes were 80 minutes long instead of the traditional 40 minutes. On this particular day, I was being observed by two college professors. Of course, I was proud of the fact that the class was conducted entirely in Spanish and the students felt comfortable expressing themselves in Spanish.
On that day, Paco came running through the door with a toasted cheese sandwich in hand. “ Senora Mike. I’m hungry and I hope you don’t mind if I just quickly eat this great toasted cheese sandwich. ” I said, “Go ahead, Paco. ” Paco sat down and finished his sandwich, Paco had now noticed our two visitors. Of course, our two visitors noticed Paco the minute he ran through the door.
The lesson was going along quite well, and all the students were working in their groups. Suddenly, Paco raised his hand and said, “Senora, esta lloviendo en mis pantalones. ”(“Mrs. M. it is raining in my pants. ”) Now, being Paco’s Spanish teacher, I understood what he wanted. I knew that it was his way of requesting to go to the bathroom. You could just imagine the laughter from the other students.
I always wonder just how much Spanish Paco learned in that class, but I know he learned more than just Spanish based on an e-mail he recently wrote to me:
I know I was a handful but you actually cared. You knew I had potential. So even though I messed up a lot, you never gate up…I’m deeply grateful to you Senora, everything you taught me about Spanish. My attitude and life will stick with me the rest of my day…
You see,Paco was my student ten years ago.

A.How to teach a successful lesson.

I hardly have any good memories of my summer holidays two years ago. All I can remember is that I was busy doing drugs with my friends for most of the time. I said to myself that I would give up drugs before I went back to school, but when school started I was still addicted to them.
I went back to school like the other students but I had become a very different person. Most students came back to school with smiles on their faces, but not me. I became a different person that didn't care about anything but drugs. It was like I was walking around in a different body.
I went from being an above average student to a really bad student. I started to do things that I never thought I would do before -like bullying(恐吓)students, and fighting with people just because they looked at me in the wrong way. I rarely smiled or played sports like I used to. I was always moody and angry with my friends and teachers. I started to skip school(逃学)once or twice a week. No one seemed to care,so I was soon absent nearly everyday. I started stealing money from my parents and I lied to other people just to get some money for drugs. When my parents found out that I stole their money and sold their jewellery, they got really angry. I started to hang out with my drug addict friends for days and nights without going back home. I even slept by the side of the road and woke up without caring what people would think about me.
Now I have changed a lot. Drugs are terrible. Stay away from them.
