The Oxford English Dictionary (OED, 牛津英语词典) is thinking of adding the Chinese word tuhao (土豪) to its 2014 edition (版本).
The word has become popular in China during the past few months to describe newly rich people who spend money in extravagant(铺张的,浪费的)ways. Tuhao has caught on in Western countries, too, to describe similar people in their countries.
The adoption (采用) of the word by foreign countries is an example of China’s spreading influence in the world not just economically, but also socially and culturally. People are paying attention to what is happening in China and are picking up some Chinese words in the process, especially those words that express unique (独特的) Chinese ideas that cannot be easily translated (翻译) into English.
The OED is also thinking of adding hukou (户口) and dama (大妈) to the already 120 Chinese words in its dictionary. Hukou refers to (指的是) China’s system of residency permits (户籍系统) and dama refers to middle-aged Chinese women whose gold buying habits influence the global gold markets. The news that the OED was adding these words has met with some criticism (批评). Some people say the words embarrass (使人尴尬) China, but others insist that in a globalized (全球化的) society it’s natural for words to spread and be adopted elsewhere. In fact, a word like tuhao expresses the humor of China. It’s easy to pronounce (发音) and very accurate (精准的) at poking fun at (嘲弄) rich people who have more money than taste.
1._____ may be adopted in the Oxford English Dictionary in 2014 according to the passage.
A. Tuhao B. Hukou C. Dama D. All above
2._____can be called “tuhao” according to the passage.
A. All newly rich people
B. People who own their money easily
C. People who love money very much
D. Newly rich people who spend money in an extravagant way
3.The underlined word “caught on” (in Paragraph 2) most probably means________.
A. 流行 B. 继续 C. 接受 D. 蔓延
4.The last paragraph mainly talks about __________________.
A. humor of Chinese style
B. criticism on the adoption of Chinese words into OED
C. support on the adoption of Chinese words into OED
D. different opinions on the adoption of Chinese words into OED

What Is Success The Oxford English Dictionary defines(定义) the word success as "the fact that you have achieved something that you want and have been trying to do or get; the fact of becoming rich or famous or of getting a high social position". Some rankings(排行榜) put Albert Einstein, Michael Jackson, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs as among the most successful people in the world. What Michael Jackson did for music is the same as what Albert Einstein did for physics. All of them do have greatly influenced the industries or media to which they belonged. J.K.Rowling, the author of the famous Harry Potter novels. She created a magical world that sold more than 500 million books and became hit movies. With an estimated(估算的) net worth of ﹩650 million in 2017, she certainly goes for the dictionary definition of success, but for her it didn't come easy. Having no job, raising her child alone, she was refused by publishers about a dozen times before one took a chance on her. This is what people love: the rags-to-riches success story.
In comparison with Rowling, the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh practically suffered a lot in life to make ends meet. When he was alive, he only sold one painting even though he created more than 2,000 works of art. Van Gogh died when he was 37 years old and with very little money to his name. However, in 1990, his painting Portrait of Dr.Gachet sold for﹩82.5 million, which has a value today of around﹩137 million. So, the question is: Is Van Gogh considered successful even though he died poor?
Besides the dictionary definitions, different people have competing ideas of what success really means. Often times the most agree on the same characteristics that make a person a success. A financial magazine named Inc. points to the following qualities that make a person successful: Drive, Confidence, Patience, Honesty, Passion…
Success isn't always about getting a lot of money or fans, even though those are the stories we see most often. There are other people who we may not know well, but who have achieved success in their own right. One perfect example is mothers. They spent days, months, and years teaching their children from birth to young adulthood. If a child grows up to be a kind, helpful, thoughtful and considerate adult, can the mother consider herself a success?
Perhaps success really is subjective, and it's up to people to define it for themselves. However, one thing seems to be in complete agreement when we search for the definition and can be best summed up by Steve Jobs, who said, "If you really look closely, most overnight successes took a long time."
1.The word " rags-to-riches" in Paragraph 2 probably means " ______ ".
A.winning success from luck
B.turning talent into treasure
C.gaining money from honor
D.rising from poorness to wealth
2.The writer mentions Vincent van Gogh to show that ______ .
A.success is through loneliness
B.success is beyond time and space
C.success is to take the life-changing opportunity
D.success is to achieve something you want and try
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Most successes happen overnight if we look closely.
B.What makes people successful is the strong mind and body.
C.A child growing to be a gentle adult can be the mother's success.
D.Albert Einstein makes greater achievement than Michael Jackson.
4.The writer probably agrees that people should ______ .
A.reorder the rankings of the world's most successful people
B.reach an agreement of what makes a person success
C.recognize and appreciate different kinds of success
D.drive themselves to set great goals for success

The Oxford English Dictionary turns 90 this year. The big, fat book is a good friend of your English learning.
But do you know the story of how the famous dictionary was created over a period of 71 years?
The very first edition of the Dictionary started to be developed as an idea in the late 1850s when a group of English language experts (专家) felt the need for such an English dictionary. They wanted a dictionary which would tell the history of each word in the language, based on data (数据) showing how each word was actually used at different periods in history. This data collection was done through a London association called the Philological Society in1857.
In 1879, Oxford University Press made preparations for publishing the Dictionary, James Murray was appointed as the new editor(编辑). Murray had never been to university. He was a self-taught language expert. However, he took on a group of helpers, and the work of adding entries(条目) to the Dictionary soon got started Henry Bradley, one of Murray's helpers, was appointed as the Dictionary's second Editor in 1887. Bradley was given the task of editing a separate part of the alphabet (字母表)starting with the letter E. But as time passed, they were fully aware that not even two separate teams were enough. In 1901, William Craigie was appointed as the Dictionary's third Editor, and in 1914 Charles Onions became its fourth Editor. By the time Onions was appointed, the Dictionary was complete as far as the letter S.
It's important to note that the Dictionary didn't finish at Z. It was the letter W that was the last to be finished on April 19, 1928. That was the day on which the first edition of the Dictionary was officially completed.
1.How did the Murray learn the language?
_______________________________________________________
2.How long did it take to edit the first edition of the Dictionary?

3.When did English language experts have the first idea to create the Dictionary?
