It was a cold rainy day and it was the day before Thanksgiving — the first one that my three children and I would be spending without their father, who passed away a year ago. Now the two children were ill with the flu. I hurried around, trying to look after each child. I found the children had no fruits. But what almost broke me down was that I only had $2.50 left –and this should last until the end of the month.
That is when I heard the phone ring. It was the secretary from our former church, and she told me that they had been thinking about us and had something to give us. I went to the church before lunch. The secretary met me and handed me two currency notes (现金券), each worth$20. I was so moved that I cried.
Then I drove to a supermarket for the children. The things cost me a little over $14.00, and I handed the note to the cashier (收银员). She took it and looked at it for a long time. I thought something might be wrong and told her that I was a single mother and how I got it. With tears in her eyes, the cashier said that she had prayed (祈祷) that morning to help others who were in need, and I gave her the chance. She added a turkey to my basket, and took out two $20 bills and paid for my things. Once again I was moved to tears.
1.Where was the farther of the children?
A.Go abroad. B.At work.
C.In the hospital. D.Died.
2.What most made the mother sad?
A.She only had $2.50 left. B.It was cold outside.
C.She had no telephone. D.She had no children.
3.Who gave the turkey to the mother?
A.The doctor B.The secretary
C.The cashier D.The boss.
4.What did the cashier do for the mother last?
A.She paid for all the things for the mother.
B.She gave $80 to the mother.
C.She took the mother to the church.
D.She laughed at the mother.

The Daffodil Lesson
It was a bleak rainy day, and I had no desire to drive up the winding mountain road to my daughter Caronlyn’s house. But she had insisted that I come see something at the top of the mountain.
So here I was, reluctantly making the two-hour journey through fog that hung like veils. By the time I was how thick it was near the summit. I’d gone too far to turn back. Nothing could be worth this, I thought as I inched along the dangerous highway.
“I’ll stay for lunch, but I’m heading back down as soon as the fog lifts,” I announced when I arrived.
“But I need you to drive me to the garage to pick up my car” Caronlyn said. “Could we at least do that?”
“How far is it I asked.
“About three minutes”, she said I’ll drive--I’m used to it
After ten minutes on the mountain road, I looked at her anxiously. "I thought you said three minutes."
She grinned. “This is a detour(绕道)”
Turning down a narrow track, we parked the car and got out. We walked along a path that was thick with old pine needles. Huge black-green evergreens towards over us. Gradually the peace and silence of the place began to fill my mind.
Then we turned a corner and stooped-and I gasped in amazement.
From the top of the mountain, sloping for several acres across folds and valleys, were rivers of daffodils in radiant bloom. A profusion(大量) of color-from the palest ivory to the deepest lemon to the most vivid salmon-blazed like a carpet before us. It looked as though the sun had tipped over and spilled gold down the mountainside. At the center there was a waterfall of purple flowers. Here and there were coral-colored tulips. Western bluebirds frolicked(嬉戏)over the heads of the daffodils, their tawny breasts and sapphire wings like a flutter of jewels.
A riot of question filled my mind. Who created such beauty? Why?How?
As we approached the home that stood in the center of the property, we saw a sign that read: “Answers to the Question I Know You Are Asking.”
The first answer was “One Woman-Two Hands, Two Feet, and Very Little Brain.: The second was:” One at a Time,” The third:” Started in 1958.”
As we drove home, I was so moved by what we had been, I could scarcely speak. “She changed the world,” I finally said, “one bulb at a time. She started almost 40 years ago, probably just the beginning of an idea, but she kept at it.”
The wonder of it would not let me go. “Imagine,” I said, “if I’d had a vision and worked at it, just a little bit every day, what might I have accomplished?”
Carolyn looked at me sideways, smiling. “Start tomorrow,” she said.
“Better yet, start today.”

Recently divorced in my 30s, I had no job and was on my way downtown on a rainy day to go to the employment offices. I had no umbrella, for my old one had fallen apart, and I couldn’t afford another one.
I sat down in the streetcar--- there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle inlaid (镶嵌着…的) with gold and bright enamel (珐琅). I had never seen anything so lovely. I examined the handle and saw a name on it. The usual procedure would have been to turn in the umbrella to the conductor, but I decided to take it and find the owner myself.
I got off the streetcar in a downpour and carefully opened the umbrella to protect myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name on the umbrella and found it. I called and a lady answered. Yes, she said in surprise that was her umbrella, which her parents, now dead, had given her as a birthday present, but it’d been stolen from her locker at school years before.
She was so excited that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to her house. She took the umbrella, her eyes filled with tears. I was only too happy to see her get back the lost umbrella, and get a job she offered me.

It was a rainy day and I was walking down the street feeling comfortable and happy. I wanted to do something kind for someone else without any reason and purpose, almost as if I was just trying to spread the abundance (充足) of love I was receiving. It was then that I saw a teenage girl dressed in tattered clothes, getting soaked(湿透). She wasn't wearing any shoes or socks. The rain wet her skin through the holes in her clothes and she was making her way through the garbage, trying to find something that would be of use to her.
I walked towards her and told her to wait for me there while I ran home to get her something. On getting home, I took off my shoes, which I really loved, wrapped them up in a plastic cover and ran to give them to the teenage girl on the street.
The girl looked surprised as if she was not used to this kind of kindness. She thanked me in a trembling (颤抖的) voice.
A famous musician who lives down the street corner stopped his car and smiled when he saw what happened. The two watchmen who saw me do this talked and gave me friendly looks.
Although I had to wear my dad's shoes, I was satisfied even if they were a bit large for my feet, because I knew the girl would walk comfortably wearing the shoes. That day I learned that letting go off the little things we own can be a big help to others.

It was a cold and windy night. My friend and I had met after a long time, and were chatting for hours. We did not notice the time passing by, and soon it was close to ten in the night. We decided to take an auto rickshaw(黄包车) to go to our house.
It started raining, and we hurried to get into an auto rickshaw and reach our place. None of the auto rickshaws stopped for us, except one.
The driver asked us where we wanted to go and we told the place. Without saying anything about the fee, he said, “please get in.”
We thanked him and got in.
Since it was very cold, I asked the driver to stop at any small restaurant or a tea shop. We wanted to have a cup of hot tea. The driver stopped near a small restaurant. We ordered tea and asked the driver to join us and have a cup of tea. The driver refused. I insisted, but he refused again politely.
I was really surprised.
In 15 minutes we reached our house. We paid the fee and the driver thanked us. On an impulse, I stopped him, as I really wanted to ask him why he refused to drink tea with us at the restaurant.
He thought for a moment and replied, “Sir, My son passed away this morning in an accident. I don’t have enough money for his funeral(葬礼), so I made a promise not to drink anything until I earn enough money. That’s why I didn’t drink tea when you offered. Please don’t misunderstand.”
We both were touched and offered him more money for his son’s funeral. He politely refused.
“Thank you for your generosity, sir. In one or two hours, if I get one or two more customers, I will earn the money I need.” Then he left the place.

D.It was a long time before the author and his friend met.
2.Why did the driver refuse to join them and have a cup of tea?
