For most kids, back-to-school time is usually bitter-sweet. The bitter part is saying goodbye to carefree, unscheduled summer days. The sweet part is saying hello to a new school year and school friends.
This exciting time is filled with smells of new books, paper and pencils. Children might wear a new set of clothes. And, of course, there are the first-day-of-school pictures that parents share with family and friends.
However, going back to school can also be a stressful time for children and families. Every kid must make the transition from easy summer life to routines, schedules and homework. Families will have financial concerns. Parents often need to pay school fees or to buy new school clothes, sports equipment, musical instruments and school supplies.
Back-to-school stress is different for different ages. Younger children may feel scared to leave their families. Making new friends and dealing with bullying can also cause stress for them. Older students may be stressed about their appearances, grades and getting into a good college.
However, parents, teachers and children can all help to make the transition back to school easier. Mary Anne Aidala, an award-winning teacher, advises parents to focus on the basics — let kids get enough sleep, eat healthy foods, and turn off electronics before bedtime.
Lori Bambina has been a teacher for 22 years. She teaches first grade in NY now. According to her, routines and knowing what a teacher wants in the classroom help to reduce stress in kids. So, she focuses on the class routine during the start of the new school year. “Well, for the students, I have my classroom set up with a very clear system. So, I will introduce the system. Then I will revisit the system because at this young age they enjoy routines. And that routine is very comforting and will not cause them stress if they know exactly where things are located and what type of behavior is expected of them.”
1.Back-to-school time can be stressful for parents because ________.
A.teachers will set many challenging tasks for them
B.they don’t know how to reduce stress in their children
C.they need to organize everything well for their children

2.When older students go back to school, they may ________.

C.be afraid to leave their parents D.have difficulty making friends
3.Lori Bambina believes students will feel less stressed ________.
A.the classroom is decorated beautifully B.teachers have low expectations of them
C.they know what they are expected to do D.they have a good relationship with teachers
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Causes of back-to-school stress B.Mixed feelings about going back to school
C.Getting school life back to normal D.Dealing with back-to-school stress

I decided to go back to school in the fall of 2010 for not being happy with my current job and financial status. I got my Associate (大专毕业证书) in May 2002 in commercial art. After graduation, I had trouble getting a job in that field. For years, I was going from one job to another, and I was not satisfied with unstableness (不稳定).
I decided to go back to school to study either international business or psychology (心理学). I weighed the pros and cons of both professions and psychology won. I like helping my friends and family. When they are faced with hard situations in their life, I’d like to give them sound advice and be honest with them. Also, I was interested in the “mind”.
I searched for online schools because my work schedule would not allow me to study in a classroom. I was nervous about taking online classes because I had heard mixed stories from my friends who were taking online classes. I decided to do it anyway to experience something different. I wanted to find an online school that was affordable and believable. While I was doing the online search, I discovered Walden University, which is specially for working adults who want to have a bachelor’s degree or higher. The process of getting accepted was easy, i.e. writing an essay on why I wanted to attend their school, sending my previous credits (以前的成绩), etc.
I am currently enrolled in the bachelor’s program for psychology, and I am paying for college via financial-aid loans (贷款). This experience has been interesting and yet upsetting as sometimes it was difficult to balance work, school and home life. I have learned a lot about psychology and myself. For example, I like writing about current events, relationships and traveling. I thought my English composition was ordinary, but after taking a few classes at Walden University, I have improved my English composition and it has made me feel confident enough to start writing professionally. Now I am a freelancer (自由撰稿人) and I am only three classes away from getting my bachelor’s degree in psychology. It is one of the best decisions I have made in my life.

Ban the Band?
Every year, our school has a dance for all the students. It’s a little funny seeing friends in clean shoes and trousers or colorful dresses, instead of the usual school _____.
Most of us think the dance is great fun---even the teachers enjoy being there. _____, two weeks ago someone said that there would be no live band this year---only CDs.
“I don’t believe it!” Amy cried out during the lunch break.
“Someone said the school couldn’t _____ a band, and they think it’s too noisy anyway,” added Daniel.
“Well, I don’t think it’s good enough _____ a band!” declared Angela, “and I’m going to see what can be done.”
Angela was as good as her word. In the afternoon she went to see the school headmaster, who agreed to give the situation some more thought. And he suggested that one possibility for having a band was to increase the _____ of each ticket from $5 to $10. Angela had to find out whether the students would like to do that.
“I need all of you to help me,” she announced to our group before school the next day. “Mr. Berry gave me a list of all the names, and suggested we ask each one their opinions about the band and _____ cost.”
During the day we asked around _____ Angela suggested, and wrote down people’s feelings about the band and the cost. We were amazed how much support there was for the band and everyone agreed to _____ the extra $5.
“I’m surprised,” smiled Mr. Berry, when we gave him the result. “I really thought that only a few people wanted their band and that the cost would be too high. OK, Angela, your next ____ is to find a good band and line them up for the dance.”
Angela was all smiles and _____ the news to Amy and Daniel. “You are amazing,” smiled Daniel to Angela as he thought how close they came to having a less than perfect dance.
