The largest bird in the world is the ostrich(鸵鸟). The ostrich mostly lives in Africa. It has a small head and a long neck. Its feathers are grey, black or brown. The feathers on its small wings are very soft, so it can’t fly in the air. When an ostrich is big and old enough, it is more than two metres tall.

In the daytime the mother ostrich often sits on the eggs. It isn’t easy to find her and her eggs because she puts her neck and head down on the sand, but there is lots of danger for an ostrich to live on the ground. It must be careful all the time. Luckily, the ostrich has very good eyesight and hearing, so it can find danger in time and run away. It can run as fast as a car. The claws(爪) of the ostrich are very sharp and strong. They are like knives. The ostrich can kill other small animals with its claws. The ostrich eats a lot and it can eat anything growing in the sand.

Ostriches eat almost everything, such as plants, insects, and small animals like lizards. They often live in groups. A group will have around ten birds, but some groups even have 100 birds. This way the whole group can help to protect the eggs. Ostrich eggs are the biggest eggs of any animal.

In fact, ostriches don’t put their head in the ground often. What they really do is to lie down and put their head and neck flat on the ground to hide. You can just see their body far away, so it appears as if they have put their head in a hole in the ground. Ostriches can not only kick with powerful feet, but also the 4 inch long claws (爪) on their feet.

Uganda depends on those power plants for most of its power, and they made the power plants larger in 2000. Many people believe the power plants have been taking too much water off Lake Victoria. As a result, they have been asked to use less water until Lake Victoria goes back to its old level.

Whether the low water level is caused by drought or power plants, the result is the same. This is already a poor area of Africa, where many people live a really hard life. People, animals and plants around Lake Victoria will suffer even more from low water levels on the lake. Many people need Lake Victoria for fishing or growing food. Fish need the water to live, and animals need it for water. Plants around the lake will die without the water, and then more animals and people will suffer. Unless the lake fills soon, many people will suffer and die.
