In contrast, a visit to Asia or South America will be much less expensive than back home.

“Fun” activities are expensive

Paying for these necessities is part of travel, but you might be surprised to learn that they could add up to less than half of the money you’ll spend abroad. If you’re like me, your “dream vacation” includes more than sitting in your hotel bed.

When I was living in Chiang Mai, Thailand, I owned a small apartment and ate delicious Asian noodles 3 times per day. With the room at $5 per night and meals for $1, I spent about $8 per day.

One of the coolest things to do in Chiang Mai is to go on a zip line adventure. It cost me $60 to get into the trees, which is about what I paid to live for 1 week in

Thailand. If you want to go on an excursion (远足) every day, you’ll easily spend

five times as much on “fun” as you do on necessities. This is true all over the world, so make sure you plan excursions into your travel budget ahead of time.

● Plan for the unexpected

You won’t always be prepared for everything that comes your way while traveling. You need at least $1,000 to help you deal with the unexpected.

In the A, B, C, D and F grading system, the first four letters are typically considered passing grades. Gradually,the letter grading system became more popular throughout the US. Why do we have letter grades? Well,part of the reason is that they made grading simpler during a time of great change for schools. As the 20th century began,growing cities and an increase in immigration led to larger school classrooms. Often, the barrels turned over as they were pulled along. The tar poured out, still burning, and houses on the street caught fire and burned down！So. in the early 1800s, the festivals were stopped.

But in 1877, Up Helly Aa started again. It was based on the early fire festivals. It is held about the same time every year, on the last Tuesday in January. The people who organized the first Up Helly Aa wanted to remind people that the festival was "traditional". So they used a Viking image(肖像) , which the early festival did not do. A wooden copy of a Viking ship is pulled through the streets and then burned on a huge bonfire. Men pull the ship through the streets with ropes. More men stand in lines on each side of the roads, holding burning sticks. All of them dress up as Vikings.

All the local people come to Up Helly Aa. But people come from all over the world to watch , too. Only local men can make the ship, pull it through the streets or hold the burning sticks. Women can't take part in this part of the festival , not even the local women. Anyone can go to watch, though.

Once the ship has been burned, there are lots of parties that go on all night. The women have been busy getting the parties ready all day. Everyone in the neighborhood , men, women and children, can go to the parties. There is lots of food and drinks. Often people sing and dance until early the next morning. So no one gets much sleep

In the 1980s, Norris Square was known for its run-down buildings and vacant parking lots filled with rubbish. Then a group of Puerto Rican women planted vegetables and flowers in one vacant lot. Soon there was also an outdoor kitchen and colorful murals showing rural life in Puerto Rico.

The community garden became a place of beauty and a source of fresh food for Norris Square residents. It also became a source of neighborhood pride. Soon people were working together to do home repairs, clean up other vacant lots, remove graffiti, and plant more trees and flowers throughout the neighborhood.

Today, instead of fights in the park, there are festivals. Instead of abandoned cars along the streets, there are trees. People can now enjoy a neighborhood that is cleaner, safer, and more beautiful.
