We are taught from childhood to be polite, civilized (有教养的) and considerate (体贴的) , yet many of us forget this as we grow up.
That's not the case for Yang Yang, a 14 - year - old from Changsha, Hunan province. She has moved many people by being honest and considerate. It was a day in April when Yang was getting ready to eat in a local restaurant. But then she accidentally dropped a plate full of food. She stood still and was at a loss. The restaurant manager was nice. She comforted Yang, saying "It doesn't matter. We can give you another meal for free."
Everyone thought that this small matter would end like that. But, when Yang left after eating, the waiter found 75 yuan in cash and a note on the table. The note said, "I'm sorry that the money might not be enough to make up for your loss, but that's all I have. Thank you for your kindness." The manager was deeply touched after reading the note. The money was probably a week's worth of pocket money for the girl.
The manager posted about this on social media and called for a search for this young girl. Many newspapers, including People's Daily, re-posted it and joined the search. Finally, Yang was found after her teacher heard about the story.
However, Yang thought it was not a big deal. "I have accepted other people's help and should make up for their kindness, " she said.
People's Daily commented (评论) on the story, saying that it showed the good in people. The manager was considerate and cared about Yang's situation, while Yang was grateful and responsible.

No one knows why we sleep, but it’s certain that we need to.People who are prevented from sleeping begin to suffer obvious effects after a few days—they think less clearly, and they fall asleep during the working hours;some may have hallucinations(幻觉).
There are no rules about sleep.Generally speaking,grown-ups sleep about 7 and half hours each night and probably more than 60 percent get between seven and eight hours. But perhaps eight percent are quite happy with 5 hours or lees, and four percent or so find that they want ten hours or more.If you feel all right, you’re probably getting enough sleep. The important thing is not to worry how much other people get—their needs may be different.Exercise doesn’t seem to need to increase the sleep time—office workers, for example, sleep for about as long as people doing physically active work.
Children sleep more than grown-ups---perhaps 14 to 18 hours soon after birth, going down to grow-up levels by early teenage.Sleep patterns also tend to be different in the elderly, who may sleep less at night than they did when younger, find sleep getting more broken, and often make it a rule to sleep during the daytime.

We are not born doubting ourselves. We learn to do it. In fact, we are usually taught to doubt ourselves. We can learn some ways that allow us to become more accepting of ourselves. Following are two behaviors that might explain the reasons why you can’t move towards greater self-acceptance.
One thing that might cause you not to accept yourself is over-generalizing about something you've done that you don’t like. For example, if you fail a test you might generalize and say, “I’m really a stupid person.” When you do this you are making a statement about all of you all of the time and not just about this one situation at this time. Instead, you might decide that your grade on this test in this subject at this time was indeed poor, and then go on to decide what you want to do about your poor grade, if anything. Getting stuck in over-generalizing discourages you from taking steps that might allow you to do better on the next exam and to build an expectation of future failure.
Having standards that are impossibly high is a second way you can not accept yourself. It may not come as a surprise to you that most of us are more demanding of ourselves than we are of others. Somehow we can tolerate the fact that other people fail, that they aren’t always kind, that they’ve done things they aren’t proud of, but we have difficulty accepting those very human aspects of ourselves. The need to be perfect is another way to set yourself up for failure and enhance the feeling that you are not acceptable. We all make mistakes. Accepting less than perfection simply means recognizing the limitations natural in being born a human being. Learn to value who you are rather than who you could become. Wouldn’t it be overpowering if we always had to do what we imagine we could do? Nobody has the time and energy to do all of that. We must make choices about what we will pursue and do them the best we can under the circumstances, which aren’t always ideal, by the way.
60.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. We can feel that we are perfect when we set ourselves up for success.
B. We can tolerate the fact that we’ve done things we aren’t proud of.
C. Over-generalizing might encourage you to expect the future.
D. Over-generalizing might cause you not to accept yourself.
61.What is the author’s attitude according to the passage?
A. It’s necessary for people to be perfect.
B. It’s acceptable for people to be imperfect.
C. It’s strange for people to be born with limitation.
D. It’s possible for people to do what they imagine.
62.What has caused the lack of self-acceptance?
A. Tolerance and high-level.
B. Limitation and expectation.
C. Over-generalization and high-standard.
D. Extreme difficulty and complete failure.

Ideas about polite behavior are different from one culture to another. Some societies, such as America and Australia, for example, are mobile and very open. People here change jobs and move houses quite often. As a result, they have a lot of relationships that often last only a short time, and they need to get to know people quickly. So it’s normal to have friendly conversations with people that they have just met, and you can talk about things that other cultures would regard as personal.
On the other hand, there are more crowded and less mobile societies where long–term relationships are more important. A Malaysian or Mexican business person, for example, will want to get to know you very well before he or she feels happy to start business. But when you do get to know each other, the relationship becomes much deeper than it would in a mobile society.
To Americans, both Europeans and Asians seem cool and formal at first. On the other hand, as a passenger from a less mobile society puts it, it’s no fun spending several hours next to a stranger who wants to tell you all about his or her life and asks you all sorts of questions that you don’t want to answer.
Cross-cultural differences aren’t just a problem for travelers, but also for the flights that carry them. All flights want to provide the best service, but ideas about good service are different from place to place. This can be seen most clearly in the way that problems are dealt with.
Some societies have “universalist” cultures. These societies strongly respect rules, and they treat every person and situation in basically the same way. “Particularist” societies, on the other hand, also have rules, but they are less important than the society’s unwritten ideas about what is right or wrong for a particular situation or a particular person. So the normal rules are changed to fit the needs of the situation or the importance of the person.
This difference can cause problems. A traveler from a particularist society, India, is checking in for a flight in Germany, a country which has a universalist culture. The Indian traveler has too much luggage, but he explains that he has been away from home for a long time and the suitcases are full of presents for his family. He expects that the check–in official will understand his problem and will change the rules for him. The check–in official explains that if he was allowed to have too much luggage, it wouldn’t be fair to the other passengers. But the traveler thinks this is unfair, because the other passengers don’t have his problem.
1.Often moving from one place to another makes people like Americans and Australians ______.
A.like traveling better |
B.easy to communicate with |
C.difficult to make real friends |
D.have a long–term relationship with their neighbors |
2. People like Malaysians prefer to associate with those ______.
A.who will tell them everything of their own |
B.who want to do business with them |
C.they know quite well |
D.who are good at talking |
3.Which of the following is true about “particularist societies”?
A.There is no rule for people to obey. |
B.People obey the society’s rules completely. |
C.No one obeys the society’s rules though they have. |
D.The society’s rules can be changed with different persons or situations. |
4. The writer of the passage thinks that the Indian and the German have different ideas about rules because of different ______.
A.interests | B.habits and customs | C.cultures | D.ways of life |

Sons who have fond childhood memories of their fathers are more likely to be emotionally stable(稳定的) in the face of day-to-day stresses, according to psychologists(心理学家) who studied hundreds of adults of all ages.
“As our study shows, fathers do play a unique(独特的) and important role in the mental health of their children much later in life,” Psychology professor Melanie Mallers of California State University said.
For this study, 912 adult men and women between the ages of 25 and 74 completed short daily telephone interviews about that day’s experiences over an eight-day period. The interviews focused on the participants’ psychological and emotional distress (i.e., whether they were nervous, sad, etc.) and if they had experienced any stressful events that day.
The participants were also required to answer questions such as, “How would you rate your relationship with your mother during the years when you were growing up?” and “How much time and attention did your mother give you when you needed it?” The same questions were asked about fathers.
People who reported they had a good mother-child relationship reported three percent less psychological distress(忧虑) compared to those who reported a poor relationship, according to Mallers.
Men who reported having a good relationship with their father during childhood were more likely to be less emotional when reacting to stressful events in their current daily lives than those who had a poor relationship, according to her findings.
Also, the quality of mother and father relationships was significantly associated(有关) with how many stressful events the participants faced on a daily basis. In other words, if they had a poor childhood relationship with both parents, they reported more stressful incidents over the eight-day study when compared to those who had a good relationship with their parents.
Mallers theorized why healthy or unhealthy relationships may have an effect on how people handle stress as adults. “Perhaps having caring parents equips children with the experiences and skills necessary to more successfully navigate(导航) their relationships with other people throughout childhood and into adulthood.” She said.
1.What can we know about the recent study from the passage?
A It was led by Melanie Mallers.
B 912 adults who were over twenty-five joined in it.
C It lasted as long as eight days.
D It was funded just by California State University.
2.Which of the following may the participants be asked about in telephone interviews?
A Their physical condition. B Their parenting(育儿) skills.
C Their emotional distress and stressful events.
D Their childhood relationships with teachers.
3.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A Many people with good parent-child relationships still can’t keep emotionally stable in stressful incidents.
B Men with a good mother-child relationship were more likely to be emotionally stable when reacting to stressful events.
C Women were better at getting along with their parents than men when they were young.
D People with good childhood relationships with parents suffered(遭受) fewer stressful incidents.
4.What can be concluded from the findings of the study?
A Childhood memories of parents have a lasting effect on one’s ability to handle stress.
B Adults with good childhood relationships with parents will live happily and successfully.
C The mother-child relationship is more important than the father-child relationship.
D The quality of parent-child relationships determines(决定) how people handle stress as adults.
