Nature has provided us with many kinds of resources. It is like a great magician(魔术师), creating wonders on Earth. One of them is the Amazon rainforest, the world’s largest and home to millions of plants and animals. Nicknamed”the lungs of our planet”, it produces about one-fifth of Earth’s oxygen. However, this wonderful natural wonder is now in danger.
Thousands of fires have broken out in Brazil, endangering much of the rainforest. These flames have lasted several weeks and are believed to be the”most intense”in almost ten years, according to BBC News.
The Amazon has seen a large number of fires in 2019. Between January and August, there were over 74,000 fires – the highest number since 2013, the BBC reported.
Forest fires are common during the dry season, which runs from July to October. They are usually caused by natural events like lightning. However, most of the fires this year are believed to be caused by farmers, who use fire as a traditional part of tropical agriculture(农业) to clean land, reported CNN.
“It’s the best time to burn because the plants are dry. Farmers wait for the dry season and they start burning and clearing the areas so that their cattle can have grass,”wrote CNN meteorologist Haley Brink.
The disaster has raised concern(关注) around the world. The Amazon rainforest is important for preventing climate change, said the BBC, absorbing millions of tons of carbon annually. When trees are cut down or burned, the rainforest’s ability to absorb carbon is reduced.
Brazilian climate expert Carlos Nobre told Reuters he’s worried. If more than 20 percent of the ecosystem is destroyed, the Amazon rainforest could reach a”tipping point (临界点)”, where the thick jungle will turn into a tropical savannah(大草原).
Nobre warned that it is not far off, with between 15 and 17 percent of the rainforest having already been destroyed.
The Brazilian government has sent soldiers to fight the fires. Many people have offered their support and called for recovery efforts. For example, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, said he wanted to donate money and US Actor Leonardo DiCaprio’s environmental charity, Earth Alliance, created a donation fund to help deal with the disaster.
The public are also encouraged to donate to charities concerned with rainforest protection. “Every little bit helps in a bad situation like this,”commented Gizmodo.

China is a country of many resources. Among its resources are many great rivers, which provide useful transport routes. Water transport is an efficient way to carry heavy loads, such as grain. In ancient times, a waterway was needed between China’s rich farmlands and the capital city. This need inspired engineers to build a canal. According to writings by the ancient thinker Confucius, work on a canal linking the Yangze River with the city of Huai-in began about 486 B.C. For many centuries afterward, Chinese emperors worked on extending this ancient canal.
This canal is now known as China’s Grand Canal. One thousand years after the original canal was begun, it was in extreme need of repair. This was in the year 607, during the Sui Dynasty. By 610 the emperor had had the canal extended. The Grand Canal formed a northeast-southwest link between the Yellow River in the north and the Huai River in the south. The canal remained the main waterway in this part of China for the next five hundred years.
In the thirteenth century, the Mongols had conquered China. The Yuan Dynasty established Beijing as the capital. The city’s growing population needed food, so a new canal was built to extend shipping. Building this part of the Grand Canal required enormous effort and cost. Neither the first attempt nor the second one was successful, so the builders chose another route. Finally this link in the Grand Canal was finished.
By the time of the Ming Dynasty, the Grand Canal had six sections. These were busy with goods until the nineteenth century. Then a series of severe floods struck China. Parts of the Grand Canal were badly damaged. By 1868 it had been largely abandoned as a means of northern route.
The Grand Canal was mostly restored in the twentieth century. It was widened and deepened, and a new section was constructed. Today the canal, which is about 1,200 miles in length, has new locks(运河的水闸). It is busy with ships and barges(驳船) carrying goods to and from cities along its banks.

A. worked with limited knowledge and skills.
B. were given a great deal of money for their achievement.
C. found a brilliant and lasting solution to their transportation problem.
D. were inspired by the ancient thinker Confucius.
3.The first large-scale(大规模的) repair of the original canal occurred in about .
A. 486 B.C. B. 607 A.D. C. the Yuan Dynasty D. the Ming Dynasty
4.Considering its history, one can predict that in the future the Grand Canal will probably .
A. be extended to further north China.
B. change from a shipping route to a recreation area.
C. need to be repaired and rebuilt.
D. be abandoned in favor of air transport and highways.

A few days before Christmas, I shared online a picture of my daughter, Michele, dressed up as Ruth Bader Ginsburg for her school’s superhero day. The picture went viral.
I shared the picture because I knew my friends and family would get a kick out of it. They know Michele well and this picture is the essence (本质) of her. I had no expectation that it would be as appealing to strangers as it was to her grandfather. But it was, and the image began to fly through the channels of social media.
As I looked through all the shares and comments, the reason for the picture’s popularity became clear — people were inspired by the idea of a strong little girl with a mind of her own. I read dozens, if not hundreds, of comments that ran along these lines: “Your daughter gives me hope for the future. I wish all little girls were like her.”
There is no doubt that my daughter is a strong little girl with a mind of her own. I bought her the book I Dissent because the title summarizes (概括) what she has been doing in her entire life: dissenting disagreeing, and making her voice heard. I believe she will grow up to be someone who fights for what she believes in.
And if one little girl like her gives people hope, then I have good news for the world: She is not the only one out there. Michele is surrounded by little girls who are ready to grab (抓住) the world with both hands and shape it to fit their vision of how things should be. For example, she has a cousin who, for both her last birthday and Christmas, asked people to give her gifts to less fortunate children. And when her little sister was 4, she told me that she “was put on the earth to make people laugh” — because when people laugh they are happy and she was “born to make people happy.”
The problem isn’t that there aren’t more tough little girls who think for themselves and stand up for what they believe in. The problem is that there are millions of girls who go unnoticed because we don’t expect girls to be that way.
When I first found out I was having a daughter, I had this thought in the back of my mind that, if I wanted her to go as far as her potential (潜力) could take her, I would have to teach her to think for herself and to use her voice to get where she wanted to go. I would have to teach her to be a strong woman.
What I didn’t realize was that she came to me pre-programmed. She, her sister and every other little girl I know have that strong woman in their DNA. It’s taken me years to understand this, but my job isn’t to teach my daughters to be something they already are — my job is to make sure they never listen to the message that they shouldn’t be that way.
If our goal is to raise strong women, the best thing we, as parents, can do is to understand that little girls come to us strong. That they are born mighty (强大), with voices they are ready to use.

A team of engineers at Harvard University has been inspired by Nature to create the first robotic fly. The mechanical fly has become a platform for a series of new high-tech systems. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.
“It’s extremely important for us to think about this as a whole system and not just a bunch of individual components (零件),” said Robert Wood, the Harvard engineering professor who has been working on the robotic fly project for over a decade. “The added difficulty with such a project is that actually none of those components are off the shelf and so we have to make them all on our own,” he said.
They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has a number of individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, and then has to be matched well to everything it’s connected to,” said Wood. The flight device was built into a set of power, computation, sensing and control systems. Wood says the success of the project proves that the flying robot with these tiny components can be built and manufactured.
Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect- scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications (应用). “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day to day basis.”
1.What challenge did the engineers have when making the robotic fly?
A. They don’t have enough related knowledge.
B. They are lack of ready-made components.
C. The system is too complex to work.
D. They fail to control all the components.
2.What does the success of the robotic fly prove?
A. Scientists are able to make tiny flying machines.
B. Humans will create a new kind of species for the nature.
C. The flight device will not need so many components.
D. It will help to kill dangerous insects in the nature.
3.What does Wood hope to do with the flying device?
A. To fix the system on other animals.
B. To put it to the market for money.
C. To solve more scientific problems.
D. To encourage people to learn biology.
4.How does Wood feel about the application of the robotic fly?
A. Worried B. Curious.
C. Doubtful. D. Confident.
