Answer the questions.
The place is perfect, the weather is wonderful, but if you’re with the wrong person, a vacation can be a disaster!
Joe 28, a flight attendant
Last October, I went on vacation to Thailand for two weeks with my girlfriend, Mia. The vacation began well. We spent two days in Bangkok and saw the Floating Market and the Royal Palace. But things went wrong when we left Bangkok. I wanted to stay in hostels, which were basic but clean, but Mia said they were too uncomfortable. So we stayed in very expensive hotels. I wanted to experience the local atmosphere, but Mia just wanted to go shopping. I thought I knew Mia well, but you don’t know a person until you travel with him or her. It was awful! We argued about everything.
For our last four days we went to Ko Chang, a beautiful island. It was like being in paradise. The weather was beautiful and the beaches were wonderful, but we just sunbathed without speaking. We spent our last night back in Bangkok, and we met some travelers from Australia. They were really friendly, and Mia started flirting with one of the boys. That was the end.
When we arrived at O’Hare International Airport the next day, we decided to break up. I took hundreds of photos, but when I got home I didn’t show them to anyone.
Laura 26, a nurse
Last spring, my best friend Isabelle and I booked a vacation in Costa Rica(哥斯达黎加). We rented a small house for a week with a fantastic view of the ocean. At the last minute, another friend, Linda, asked if she could come, too. We felt sorry for her because she had problems with her boyfriend, so we said yes.
Costa Rica was magical and the weather was perfect, but the vacation was a disaster for one simple reason: Linda was so cheap! She has a good job so she’s not poor, but she just didn’t want to pay for anything. When we went sightseeing, she didn’t want to go on any cruises or do any nature activities that cost money. When we went on a zipline tour, she complained that it was too expensive. When we went to have lunch or dinner, she always wanted to go to cheap restaurants or she bought a sandwich and ate it in the house. But the night I invited her and Isabelle out on my birthday, she chose the most expensive food on the menu! The worst thing was that although Isabelle and I paid for the house, Linda never once bought us a coffee or a snack.
I’d love to go back to Costa Rica one day … but without Linda!

Reading newspapers is a convenient way to get the daily news. They are not expensive, and we can buy them at gas stations, supermarkets and newsstands. However, newspapers were not always so easy to get until Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press (印刷机) in the fifteenth century. It made copies by making a piece of paper across metal type (金属活字印刷). There is black ink on it. That’s why “the press” not only means the machine that prints the newspaper, but also newspapers themselves.
The term “newspaper” was first introduced during the 17th century, and the first newspaper was printed in Germany. Before people got into the habit of buying their own copies, a single copy was posted in a public place on a wall or notice board.
Newspapers were not designed very beautifully at first. Today, newspapers contain much more than a record of the day’s events. There are sections for fashion, food, sports, cartoons and games. Newspapers are a source of information and entertainment. For hundreds of years, printed newspapers were very popular.
However, in the 21st century, printed newspapers are starting to disappear. Four hundred years ago, there were not many newspapers because they could not be printed quickly, and many adults didn’t even know how to read. Today tablets, phones, and the Internet are replacing (代替) newspapers because it is easier and cheaper to read the news online.

She wrote her first poem about her first year in America. She called it “Invisible (无形的)”. The day she read it in front of the team, she broke down crying. She cried a lot. “I had too much to express (表达) myself,” Tahay said.
Though her English was not good at that time, she kept at it. At first, she wouldn’t tell her friends about her poetry because she worried they’d make fun of her.

Only animals have the ability to see clearly when it is completely dark. A young boy who lives in a remote Chinese village seems to have the same ability.
Nong Youhui’s parents live in China’s Guangxi Province (省). They noticed their son’s eyes were different on the day he was born. Instead of black or dark brown, the common color for Asian babies, they were a light blue. Even more unusual was the fact that when a flashlight was shined upon them, they would give a bluish-green light just like the eyes of a cat.
However, when the parents went to see the village doctor, he told them that they would turn to black or dark brown, as he grew older.
Since the young boy was normal in every other way, the parents soon got used to his beautiful eyes and life went on as usual. Then a few days ago, Nong Youhui’s teacher heard him complaining about how difficult it was for him to see in the bright sunlight. When a classmate joked that his eyes looked like those of a cat, the teacher decided to do something. He shone a flashlight into young Nong’s eyes—They in turn, flashed back.
When he asked Nong if he could see in the dark, the young boy said yes. To test his words the teacher invited him to catch crickets(蟋蟀) on a dark night – Sure enough, the young boy needed no human produced light – His shining eyes were enough to catch the crickets.
The news, which came about in 2013, has changed Nong Youhui’s life forever. As news spread, experts from all over the world flew in to examine his special power.
Cat-boy, as he is noe called, has become world famous and recently, even earned himself a place in a new Guinness World Record (吉尼斯世界纪录)– The first human who can see in the dark! How cool is that?
