I’m originally from Orange County, California, where I had the pleasure and honor of serving as a Newport Beach ocean lifeguard for five seasons. Whenever I could, I got shifts working the Point. So, late in a shift, I was working Tower 15. Two blocks to my right was another guard named Mike, working Tower 17. I'd known Mike for a number of years. Mike had a rough upbringing. You can tell just by looking at him. He has a number of really frightening tattoos (纹身)，and his bald head shows the scar he got from a broken beer bottle. Maybe he wasn't the friendliest guard on the beach. I admit, I didn't really get along with Mike. But everything he lacked in friendly appearance and social skills, he more than made up for in lifesaving ability.
He called me over the phone and said, “Hey, I got a couple kids. I gotta go give’ em a warning. Keep an eye on us. “
I said, “Sure, “ and hung up.
Anytime you get out of your tower, you're supposed to let somebody else know, in case a situation develops. And sure enough, as soon as he hung up the phone, a rip was snapped up under these two kids, and they're getting sucked out. During the flight they kept watching over me and I suddenly had a small group of nurse, bringing blankets, food, drinks and caring and smile. I was thankful to them.

Alan heard his voice asking, “Are you sure it’s absolutely safe?”
The officer looked at him. “Well, nothing is absolutely safe. Crossing the road isn’t absolutely safe. But the danger is minimal. We wouldn’t have taken you here otherwise. Do you still want to volunteer?”
Alan nodded but felt uneasy. Sleeping in a tent with other campers had sounded OK, but the idea of being alone in the night made him tremble.
Earlier that day, the officer had challenged the campers to spot animal tracks along the river. That was fun. But being alone in the dark was not. Alan’s flashlight was already fading to a dim glow because he had used it too often. Looking around, Alan thought he saw a large bird swooping(俯冲) and wondered if it was an owl. He had seen small paw prints in the sand by the river. Was the owl hunting for the creature that had made them?

week of hard work, the bridge was completed. They all agreed to ask Mr. Robinson to officially open the bridge. “He has helped us most,” David said.
“And tomorrow morning we can go around to all the houses,” added Roy, “and tell the people that the bridge will be officially opened at six o’clock. Then we can remind them about their promises about money,” Roy added.
“But we don’t really want that, do we?” said Robert.
“Yes,” said Helen. “We need it and I think we should collect it.” She glanced quickly at the others, who nodded.
The next day, the students visited all the houses again. They were surprised when they saw how pleased the people were with them. By two o’clock they had collected over a hundred dollars. By five o’clock, unknown to Robert, they had spent it.
