Scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have reported evidence that Mars was warmer and wetter long ago than it is today. The Caltech scientists say they have directly established the temperature of Mars four billion years ago. At least, they established the surface temperature on part of the planet at that time. The researchers say it is the first such evidence to be discovered and presented.
The Caltech scientists say carbonate(碳酸盐)minerals formed on Mars at about eighteen degrees Celsius. They reached the finding after studying a meteorite(陨石)that had its beginnings near the Martian surface.
Today, the average temperature on Mars is sixty-three degrees below zero Celsius.
The finding was reported on the website of the National Academy of Sciences. Caltech Assistant Professor Woody Fischer helped to prepare the report. He says eighteen degrees Celsius is not especially cold or hot. He says this makes the finding extremely interesting. Knowing the temperature can give scientists an idea of the climate on Mars long ago. It can also help them decide whether the planet had liquid water. Spacecraft orbiting Mars have shown what appear to be rivers, lakebeds and mineral deposits. These pictures suggest that, at one time, water did flow there. Mars Rover vehicles and other spacecraft have proved the information.
The meteorite the scientists examined is one of the oldest known rocks in the world. It is called the Allan Hills meteorite. Its name came from the place in Antarctica where it was found in 1984. The meteorite is believed to have blown loose from the Mars' surface when another space rock struck its "home."
1.The underlined word “establish” in Paragraph 1 probably means “___________”.
A. to set up
B. to make people accept a belief
C. to discover or prove
D. to start having a relationship with others
2.How did the scientists reach the finding?
A. By studying Allan Hills meteorite.
B. By using spacecraft orbiting Mars.
C. By studying minerals gathered on Mars.
D. By studying a meteorite on the Martian surface.
3.According to the fourth paragraph, what have spacecraft orbiting Mars done?
A. Measuring the temperature of Mars.
B. Taking photos of the surface of Mars.
C. Finding that there is water flowing on Mars.
D. Proving where human beings will probably land on Mars.
4.Where can we most probably read this passage?
A. In a biography of scientists. B. In a geography magazine.
C. In an environment report. D. In a science report.

Scientists have found what look like caves on Mars, and say they could be protecting life from the planet’s terrible environment.
The first caves appear as seven mysterious black dots (点) on the pictures which were sent back by NASA’s Mars Odyssey orbiter. Each as large as a football field, they may be openings into natural caves below the Martian surface.
“If there is life on Mars, there is a good chance that you’d find it in caves,” said Jut Wynne, one of the researchers who noticed the features (特征) while working on a US Geological Survey Mars Cave Detection Program.
Jonathan Clarke, a geologist with the Mars Society of Australia, yesterday described the discovery as exciting.
One photo taken at night by an infrared imager(红外线成像器) showed one hole to be unusually warm, suggesting hot air may be flowing out.
“I said: ‘Wow, that’s a cave’” Dr. Clarke said excitedly. “People have been looking for these for a long time; now we have found them.”
He agreed such caves could be perfect places to search for life escaping from the bitterly cold, radiation-soaked(充满辐射的), dry surface.
“Tiny drops of water could collect inside,” he said. “If there are gases coming out, they could provide energy for a whole range of bacteria (细菌). A cave is also a protection from radiation; the surface of Mars is exposed to high levels of space radiation.”
The caves probably formed when tube-shaped lava flows(管状岩浆流) spread across the planet long ago. The outside of the tubes cooled, forming solid walls, while something hotter inside allowed the remaining to flow out, forming caves.
1. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. How the caves were formed on Mars.
B. How NASA sent the pictures back to earth
C. Caves on Mars may be full of hot air or a sign(迹象)of life.
D. Scientists have completely recognized the surface of Mars.
2. We can learn from the passage that __________.
A. water has already been found on Mars
B. the scientists found all the caves at night
C. it is certain that there is life in these caves
D. the surface of Mars is bitterly cold, radiation-soaked and dry
3. According to the passage, Dr. Clarke was so excited because ________.
A. such caves could provide energy for life
B. they had finally found the caves on Mars
C. such caves would be perfect places to search for life
D. There would be life on Mars.
4. Necessary conditions for life on Mars mentioned in the passage may include_________.
A. lava and energy B. water and radiation from space
C. gases and lava D. water and protection from radiation
5. what does the underlined word “ the planet” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. the Mars B. the earth C. the caves D. radiation

On the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize for the discovery of artemisinin, has been awarded China's Medal of the Republic. The medal is the country's highest honor for outstanding figures that have made great contributions to the construction and the development of the P.R.C.
Tu Youyou, born in 1930, has become the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize, for her work in helping to create an anti-malaria medicine. The 84-year-old’s route to the honor has been anything but traditional. In China, she is being called the “three nos” winner: no medical degree, no doctorate, and she’s never worked overseas. In 1967, malaria, a then deadly disease, spread by mosquitoes was decimating Chinese soldiers fighting Americans in the jungles of northern Vietnam. A secret research unit “Mission 523” was formed to find a cure for the illness. Two years later, Tu Youyou was instructed to become the new head of “Mission 523”.
“Mission 523” read ancient books carefully for a long time to find historical methods of fighting malaria. When she started her search for an anti-malaria drug, more than 240,000 compounds(化合物)around the world had already been tested, without any success. Finally, the team found a brief reference to one substance, sweet wormwood(青蒿), which had been used to treat malaria in China around 400 A.D. The team took out one active compound in wormwood, and then tested it. But nothing was effective until Tu Youyou returned to the original ancient text. After another careful reading, she changed the drug recipe one final time, heating the compound without allowing it to reach boiling point.
After the drug showed promising results in mice and monkeys, Tu Youyou volunteered to be the first human recipient of the new drug. “In any case, Tu Youyou is consistently praised for her drive and passion”. One former colleague, Lianda Li, says Ms. Tu is “unsociable and quite straightforward”, adding that “if she disagrees with something, she will say it.”
Another colleague, Fuming Liao, who has worked with Tu Youyou for more than 40 years, describes her as a “tough and stubborn woman”. Stubborn enough to spend decades piecing together ancient texts, she applies them to modern scientific practices. The result has saved millions of lives.
1.According to Paragraph 2, we can learn that .
A.Tu is the first woman to win a Nobel Prize
B.Tu has a medical degree
C.Tu’s road to success is not traditional
D.Tu discovered a cure for malaria
2.The underlined word “decimating” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by .
A.encouraging B.killing
C.annoying D.benefiting
3.Which of the following statements is true?
A.Tu first invented the idea of using sweet wormwood as a cure.
B.Tu was inspired by medical textbooks published in northern Vietnam.
C.The compound needs to be heated to the boiling point to be effective.
D.Over 240,000 compounds were proved ineffective before Tu’s search.
4.Tu Youyou can be best described as a person.
A.devoted and stubborn B.straightforward and mean
C.considerate and tough D.sociable and generous

Scientists may have found a way to reduce shortage of type O blood. Type O is the kind of blood that hospitals most often need. What the researchers are testing is an easier way to make type O blood out of other kinds of blood.
There are four main kinds of blood. Most people born with one of these four: Type A,Type B, Type AB or Type O. Type O can be safely given to anyone. So it is commonly used when a person is injured or sick and has to have blood.
The differences among blood types are linked to whether or not red blood cells contain certain kinds of sugar molecules(分子). These molecules are found on the surface of the cells. They are known as antigens (抗原). These antigens are found with type A, B and AB blood but not with type O.
More than twenty-five years ago, scientists found that the antigens could be removed to create what they called universal-type cells. They could be removed with chemicals called enzymes(酶). But large amounts of enzymes were required to make the change.
Doctor Henrik Clausen of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark led the study. The next step, he says, is to complete safety tests. The team is working with the American company ZymeQuest to test the new method. If it meets safety requirements(*k)and is not too costly,it could become a widely used life-saving tool to increase the supply of universal blood.
1.How do scientists deal with the problem of lacking type O blood?
A.Hope more people to donate type O blood.
B.Make the most of the present type O blood.
C.Develop new ways of using type O blood.
D.Make type O blood out of other kinds of blood.
2.What make people have different kinds of blood?
A.Sugar molecules in red blood cells.
B.People's different living conditions.
C.Peoples various immune systems.
D.The variety of peoples cells and genes.
3.What can we infer from the text?
A.Type O blood can be safely given to anyone
B.Antigens could easily be removed to create universal blood.
C.A Danish company wanted to involve itself in studying blood.
D.The new method is not safe enough to be put into use in hospitals now.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.Four different kinds of blood
B.A new way to make type O blood
C.The latest research on blood type
D.Find the proper type of blood
