Sleepiness and boredom lead to yawning (打哈欠), so it has long been believed that the action makes us feel more awake by stretching the muscles surrounding the lungs, or by bringing more oxygen to the blood and the brain. Yet in tests, breathing air with high levels of carbon dioxide or even pure oxygen made no difference to the frequency of yawns.
Another theory, proposed by the French physician Olivier, is that yawning improves the circulation of the fluid (液体) that surrounds the brain. As a result, we can focus better on a task. This might explain why athletes often yawn naturally before they compete.
Recently, though, a new explanation has appeared: Yawning is a way to cool the brain. Experiments led by Gordon Gallup at the University at Albany showed that people yawned far less when their head was cooled by a cold pack compared with holding a heated pack to their forehead The temperature of the brain rises when we are tired, so it is possible that yawning is a way to protect the brain from overheating due to tiredness.
But a strange thing is that when we see another person yawn, we catch it too. In other words, yawning is contagious.
How can we make sense of these different types of yawning? It’s possible that contagious yawning is something different, and might have a social purpose. Steven Palek and his colleagues at the University at Albany say that contagious yawning may be linked to our ability to understand what others want to do. If you are good at reading others’ facial expressions you are more likely to “catch” a yawn. Therefore, lonely people tend to be less affected by yawing, according to research by Atsushi Senju, now at Birkbeck, University of London.
So the simple act of yawning tursout to be surprisingly complex Has this research made you yawn yet?

If you want to express something so unbelievable that it must have been a special effect, you have a new word to add to your vocabulary.
It’s “Duang”, an onomatopoetic (拟声词) word which doesn’t relate to any particular Chinese character and refers to a special effect.
A video parody (恶搞) adapted from a shampoo commercial featuring Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan spread quickly online, leading Internet users to invent the new word.
The video begins with Chan flashing his black, smooth hair, which would have been perfect except that it was not his real hair.
Next, a self-satisfied Chan admits, to the repetitive, rhythmical sounds of “Duang”, “I refused to approve of this product when they first came to me because of my thin hair, but the director insisted, saying special effects could be used to make my hair look healthy on the screen. Now you see, it’s all special effects. It’s not real.”
The original advertisement became the target of punishment by the government for over- spreading the effects of the shampoo after it was broadcast in 2004.
“Duang” has now become one of the hottest topics on Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like Chinese social network site among those crazy ones imitating Jackie Chan’s speech in different situations.
The actor’s Weibo account was flooded with comments containing the word in this sweeping online trend.
The video came at a time when the famous movie star has been under public attention after trying to save the ill image of his son, Jaycee Chan, who was released from prison this week.
Data from Baidu, the major Chinese search engine, also proved the phrase’s popularity as it has been searched more than 586,000 times within two days.
The word of geili’s sudden rise in 2010 caught the attention of international media when it made up for the word’s official translation-geilivable-to describe something cool or awesome.
It’s not the first time that online word has become a regular vocabulary in China.
1.From the passage we know that the word “Duang” was originally made .
A. by some crazy Internet users
B. to refer to a kind of product
C. by Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan
D. to expresssome special meaning
2.From the passage we know that the new word “geili” is .
A. only popular in China
B. a cool and awesome word
C. used by ordinary people
D. also widely used abroad
3.What is the purpose of the author in writing the passage?
A. To tell us online words have enriched Chinese vocabulary.
B. To teach all the Internet users how to invent new words.
C. To explain how Jackie Chan invented the popular word.
D. To urge people to fight against the false advertisements.

When It’s Time to Give Up I’m sure you have been told that in order to become successful, you must persevere (坚持), fight, stand up whenever you fall, and march forward until the end. I say those things to people all the time, so why am I telling you now that sometimes it is actually better to quit? The reason is that in certain cases, you could only go forward if you go back.
Sometimes you will be putting a lot of time and effort in achieving a goal to find out one day that your strategy is totally wrong. You could be achieving the same results in half the time had you been focusing on doing the more important things.
Let’s say your goal was to lose weight. You then set a goal to do 1000 sit-ups a day. After about 1 month of doing this, you realize that you have been disciplined enough to hit your goal of 1000 sit-ups a day, however, you aren’t getting any closer to your main goal of losing weight. This is called focusing on a secondary goal, which sometimes is the wrong strategy.
We sometimes get so focused on a secondary goal that we lose focus on the primary goal. I see this with sales people all the time. Their main goal is to make money but they often find their focus on hitting some new position within the sales department and when that doesn’t happen, they feel like a big failure. The goal never was to hit some position; the goal was to make money whether with this company or another company.
Would it make sense, in this case, for a sales person to quit the job if his goal of making a certain amount of money just wasn’t happening? His managers would probably call him a quitter, but his goal is to make money. If he can obtain that goal through a different source, then quitting would actually be the smart thing to do.
So when is it time to give up? When what you are doing no longer makes sense in respects to achieving your main goal. Sometimes it will make more sense to give up what you are doing and start on a different path towards the same goal.
Some people will spend their entire lives on a path to a certain goal only to find out in the end that the path they took was the wrong one. There is no shame in giving up on a path you are taking to your goal as long as you always aim to reach your goal. There’s no point in staying on a path that will lead you to nowhere.
1.Why does the author advocate giving up?
A. Because giving up halfway will save half the time.
B. Because perseverance does not work in most cases.
C. Because sometimes people adopt wrong strategies.
D. Because no one can achieve success without hard work.
2.Which of the following is a secondary goal in the case of sales people?
A. To gain recognition from their boss.
B. To make money in the present company.
C. To work for other better companies.
D. To get promoted in the sales department.
3.What is the author’s attitude towards giving up?
A. One should devote his whole life to one goal rather than give up.
B. One should not regret giving up if he finds he is on a wrong path.
C. One always needs to stick to the same strategy to achieve his goal.
D. One should focus on primary and secondary goals before he quits.

“Love your neighbor as yourself" is a saying familiar to most of us. It means that you must have the ability to love and accept yourself in order to form and keep satisfying relationship with others. Self-esteem means accepting yourself for who you really are, and believing that you are indeed a worthwhile person who is deserving of love and respect from others.
Self-esteem is our sense of how good we feel about ourselves. It is based on our judgment of ourselves, not on other people's assessment, but simply on our own. Our self-esteem is not dependent on our talent. Some very ordinary people feel very good about themselves, while other extraordinarily high achievers hold low opinions of themselves.
Self-esteem is the primary key to long-term stress management. Why? The first three sources of stress are: predictable life event, unexpected changes and build-up of daily stresses. These are much easier to handle when we believe in ourselves. A positive, healthy self-esteem gives us the “hardiness” (强健) to deal with the difficulties of life, and to see them as challenges to be met, rather than threats to be feared.
The fourth category of stress is entirely the result of a low self-esteem. It is the category of stress that is most common and tiring over the long run. This kind of stress cannot be overcome, or even changed, until the self-esteem problems that cause it are corrected.
Learning to love yourself for who you are is the key to overcoming stress. Self-esteem comes from the self, and cannot be promoted by others. A person who feels that his self-esteem comes from the approval of those around him or her is bound to self-destruct (自毁). One cannot keep the level of “performance” required to please everyone else, especially if that performance disagrees with who you are and is simply a facade that makes you popular with the world. When the applause is gone, there is nothing left.
Only those who can feel the strength of knowing who they are and those who can feel good about that will survive the stresses of life. Self-esteem is the basis of contentment and positive living.
1.What is the key to overcoming stress according to the passage?
A. Removing yourself from stressful situation.
B. Learning to love yourself for who you are.
C. Facing the stress and dealing with it.
D. Getting help from friends.
2.What does the underlined word "facade" (in Para 5) mean?
A. A false appearance. B. A big worry.
C. A wrong action. D. A strange feeling.
3.The passage is written to ______.
A. tell people how to overcome stress
B. help people form good relationship with others
C. show the importance of feeling good about yourself
D. provide the different methods to get a clear view of yourself

Military training has long been considered a ritual(仪式) that freshmen must go through in order to officially start their college lives. While some question the necessity of such training. Many students see military training as a campus tradition that should be maintained.
Early in February, the Ministry of Education issued a new regulation that colleges and universities should carry out a minimum of 14 days compulsory military training for freshmen.
In a report by Beijing Evening News, Hou Zhengfang, a Beijing-based education PhD, questioned the benefits of military training. “The training routine does little to improve students’ physical fitness over only two weeks’ time. Maybe some disaster prevention training, such as earthquake survival or escaping from fires would be of greater benefit.”
Meng Yang, a 19-year-old freshman at Guangxi University, fainted during training. She said that many students, especially girls, are willing to train under direct sunshine. “For me, military training is physically challenging and even damages my health.”
According to Li Jian from the student affairs office of Guangzhou University, feeling dizzy happens frequently during military training and the school has received a lot of complaints from both students and parents: “But I still think military training is a good thing. Students are easier to manage after the military training. They became more positive about their new environment after the training.”
Although autumn is fast approaching Beijing, the noon heat burns 3300 freshmen on Tsinghua University’s campus. Chu Jinjing, a freshman majoring in medicine, did feel some discomfort while training in sweaty clothes in the glaring heat, the 18-year-old still enjoyed being part of group going through strict exercises. “By going through this tough training, students bond faster and a sense of belonging to the school can be formed. I’ve made a lot of friends already.”
According to the Ministry of Education, the purpose of military training is to teach students discipline, the spirit of teamwork and endurance. But in reality, according to Xiong Bingqi, deputy director of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, the effect is not satisfying. “Such goals require long-term development. It is unrealistic to expect military training to make a difference in only 14 days.” He thus suggests that it should be up to schools to conduct military training in a way that best suits their students.
However, Wang Wenhui, an 18-year-old freshman from Xi’an Jiaotong University, sees military training as a tradition that reaches beyond character building. “From junior and senior high school to college, we join military training to start a new journey. I would feel a bit incomplete without it.”
1.How many people expressing their opinions are mentioned in this passage?
A.4 B.5 C.6 D.7
2.According to Hou Zhengfang, it seems much more beneficial to give freshmen_____________.
A.survival skills
B.military training

D.strict exercises
3.What is the author’s attitude towards military training?
A.Supportive B.Subjective
