Many people think of the brain as a mystery. They don't know much about intelligence and how it works. When they do think about what intelligence is, many people believe that a person is born smart, average, or dumb — and stays that way in the whole life. But new research shows that the brain is more like a muscle — it changes and gets stronger when you use it. And scientists have been able to show just how the brain grows and gets stronger when you learn.
Everyone knows that when you lift weights, your muscles get bigger and you get stronger. A person who can't lift 20 pounds when he/she starts exercising can get strong enough to lift 100 pounds after working out for a long time. That's because the muscles become larger and stronger with exercise. And when you stop exercising, the muscles shrink and you get weaker. That's why people say “Use it or lose it!”
But most people don't know that when they practice and learn new things, parts of their brain change and get larger a lot like muscles do when they exercise. Inside the cortex (皮层) of the brain are billions of tiny nerve cells, called neurons. The nerve cells have branches connecting them to other cells in a complicated network. Communication between these brain cells is what allows us to think and solve problems. When you learn new things, these tiny connections in the brain actually multiply and get stronger. The more you challenge your mind to learn, the more your brain cells grow. Then, things that you once found very hard or even impossible to do — like speaking a foreign language or doing algebra (代数) — seem to become easy after learning them for a period of time. The result is a stronger, smarter brain.
Scientists started thinking that the human brain could develop and change when they studied animals' brains. They found out that animals that lived in a challenging environment were more “perspicacious” — they were better at solving problems and learning new things.
1.According to the first paragraph,________.
A. the function of our brain is like that of the muscle
B. until now it's impossible to explain the brain's mystery
C. many people believe one's intelligence is naturally determined
D. one's brain grows stronger as the age increases
2.Training muscles is compared to ________.
A. using the brain
B. connecting things in your brain
C. lifting weights
D. doing research about the brain
3.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about_________?
The complex structure of the brain.
B. How changes in the muscles affect the brain.
C. The importance of the brain.
D. How the brain becomes stronger by learning new things.
4.What does the underlined word “perspicacious” in the last paragraph probably mean_________?
A. Strong. B. Smart. C. Popular. D. Active.
5.The paragraph that follows the passage will most probably talk about _______.
A. the differences between animals’ brains and humans’ brains
B. the relation between human brains and muscles
C. scientists’ findings about animals’ brains
D. how to make your brain smarter through self-development

Sitting too much is linked to changes in a section of the brain that is important for memory, according to a recent study by UCLA researchers of middle-aged and older adults.
Studies show that too much sitting, like smoking, increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes and premature death. Researchers at UCLA want to see how sedentary behavior (sitting for long periods of time) influences the health of the brain, especially regions of the brain that are important to memory formation.
UCLA researchers gathered 35 people aged 45 to 75 and asked about their physical activity levels and the average number of hours per day they spent sitting over the previous work. Each person had a high-resolution MRI (热分辨磁共振成像)scan, which provides a detailed look at the medial temporal lobe, or MTL, a bruin region involved in the formation of new memories.
The researchers found that sedentary behavior is an important predictor of thinning of the MTL and that physical activity, even at high levels, is mil enough to compensate the harmful effects of silting for long periods.
“This study does not prove that too much sitting causes thinner brain structures, but instead that more hours spent sitting are associated with thinner regions,” researchers said. In addition, the researchers focused on the hours spent sitting, but did not ask participants if they took breaks during this time.
The researchers next hope to follow a group of people for a longer duration to determine if sitting cause the tinning and what role gender (性別), race, and weight might play in bruin health related to silting.
“MTL thinning can be an indication of cognitive (认知的) decline in middle-aged and older adults. Reducing sedentary behavior may be a possible target for measures designed to improve bruin health in people at risk for Alzheimer’s disease,” researchers said.
1.What is the study done by UCLA mainly intended to find out?
A. What harm sitting too much causes.
B. Why silting too much is like smoking.
C. How too much sitting affects brain health.
D. Whether too much sitting causes early death
2.Participants were scanned by a high-resolution MRI to .
A. evaluate their memory loss
B. examine their MTL conditions
C. record their physical activity levels
D. record the length of lime for their sitting
3.What do UCLA researchers think of their study?
A. It in a great success.
B. It is little practical value.
C. It must target the young.
D. It still needs to be improved.
4.What can be the best title for the text?
A. Long Sitting Is Bad for Your Brain
B. How to Improve Brain Health

In many parts of the world, cars play an important role in daily life and many societies would not exist without them. So the idea that in 20 years’ time, no one will own cars may be hard to believe. But this is the prediction made by a team of transport researchers who are taken seriously, not only by government but also by car manufacturers.
The Human Science and Advanced Technology Institute at Loughborough in the UK is part of an international research program. The team there believes that by 2020 all cars will be computerized, which will mean much saving,no accidents and better use of roads. The super-intelligent car of the 21st century will drive itself, and it will not be owned by one individual. Instead, we will have a choice of cars and change them as frequently as we change our clothing.
According to Dr. David Davis, who leads the research team, these predictions are based on the rising cost of the car culture, which had blocked up our cities, polluted our air, and caused more deaths than both world wars put together.
Davis says cars will be fitted with some intelligent devices to regulate the distance between one car and another. The car will automatically speed up, or slow down, to match the speed of the car in front. Computers are much safer drivers than people, so cars in a road train will be able to drive much closer together than cars driven by people. By 2010, Dr. David Davis believes, car technology will give motorists a clear view of the road, whatever the weather conditions, by projecting an image of the road ahead on to the car’s windscreen. And by 2020, cars will travel in convoy linked to each other electronically. Cars will be connected by an electronic tow bar to the car in front to form “road-trains”. “The front vehicle in such a train burns the normal amount.” says Davis. “But all the others in the train would bum about ten percent 0f the normal amount, and so produce about ten percent of the pollution.”

D. Cars will produce more pollution than present ones. |
3.The leader of the research team believes that the present car culture will change because ________.
A. cars play a very important role in daily life |
B. many societies would stop functioning without cars |
C. cars should not be owned by one individual |
D. it causes many deaths to human society |
4.The expression closest in meaning to the phrase “in convoy” in the last paragraph is ________.
A. in line B. sidelong |
C. side by side D. shoulder to shoulder |
5. What will happen if cars are joined to each other electronically in 2020?
A. Motorists will get a clear view of the road. |
B. The weather condition will not have effect on motorists. |
C. There will be less pollution caused by car. |
D. All trains will burn less fuel than present. |

During the 19th century, scientists found that when certain parts of the brain of a person were hurt, he would lose the power of doing certain things. And so people thought that each part of the brain does a different job. But modern research has discovered that this is not so, for it is not easy to show exactly what each part of the brain does.
In the past fifty years there has been a great increase in the amount or research done on the brain. Scientists have found out that the way the brain works is not so simple as people in general may think. Chemists tell us that about 100,000 chemical changes take place in the brain every second. Some recent researches also suggest that we can remember everything that happened to us. We may not be able to think of the things we have heard and seen but it is kept there in the store-house of the human mind. Earlier scientists thought that the power of one’s brain got weaker and weaker as one grows older. But it is plenty of exercise, it keeps its power. It is now thought that is not true. As long as the brain is given plenty of exercise, it keeps its power. It has proved that an old person who has always been active in the mind has a quicker mind than a young person who has done physical work without using much of his brain.
