Jennifer’s Hurricane Experience
I have evacuated(疏散)lots of times in my life. To make sure everything is safe, my family have to move a lot of things. I usually help my mom and my brothers help my dad. Mom and I take all of the special keepsakes(纪念品)to low safe places. Another thing we have to do is to take our sailboat out into deep water and anchor it really well. When it’s time to anchor the sailboat, Scott, my father’s brother, comes over. I just need to wait in the car with my mom and brothers before we evacuate.
John’s Hurricane Experience
My family evacuated for hurricane Opal in 1995. We left two days early because we were going to my dad’s 35th High School Reunion(聚会). There was a lot of traffic getting out of town. But we didn’t get into trouble as we had arrived at the school. During hurricane Georges, I slept. But there was a lot of lightning, thunder and rain at that night. The next morning, there were a lot of branches, twigs and leaves everywhere.
Catherine’s Hurricane Experience
This year, we experienced two hurricanes, Earl and Georges. We did the same thing in both hurricanes. We would always be watching the news. There was a lot of rain … a whole lot of rain. The hurricane never really got close enough to do very much damage. I have never evacuated, and I don’t think that I ever will.
Ryan’s Hurricane Experience
I am a police officer on an island in the Texas Gulf Coast. I was directly affected by the violent weather throughout the hurricane season. Our department was ordered to stay on the island while all the other citizens were evacuating. I didn’t feel at all prepared for the situation. So I went to the grocery store and purchased some food. I thought a survival kit would have helped ease some of the tension in my mind.

For years I have had no idea what I have been doing with my life. I was a 30-year-old lawyer(律师) in New York. But being a lawyer was never my dream or goal in life. I honestly wanted to be a writer. I have a great imagination and would write amazing stories in my head. But I always knew that being a writer was never possible for me because it was a better financial decision to stay a lawyer.
Recently, I couldn’t fall asleep at my usual time of 10 p. m. and when I did fall asleep I had the same dream over and over again. The dream starts with me in the ocean trying to go for a swim and I’m searching for something, but I start to drown(溺水) and have no control over my body. Then a light shines through the waters and when I look up all I can see is myself in a bright white room writing a novel. Then I hear a voice say repeatedly, “Now is the time to try something new!”
It wasn’t just a dream;it was my opportunity to make something good out of my life. That afternoon, I quit my job at the law firm and I couldn’t have been any happier. My life started at 30, and every day since that point I haven’t stopped enjoying life. I started to write and have been on the best-sellers(畅销书) list for the last two months. Things have definitely turned around.
Change is a good thing; it gives us an opportunity to take a chance. So my two favorite words I live by and so should you are “change and chance”.

Dear Graham,
My partner and I have recently lost a pet quite suddenly. Normal life is continuing with so much sadness for my pet meant so much to me. Lots of people won't understand my feeling this way about the death of an animal. This obviously isn't the first time someone in my life has passed away: when I was younger we lost elderly relatives who I loved very much, and naturally much-loved family pets died occasionally too. But this has hit me so much harder. I put so much love into the relationship and I'm just finding it hard to get my head around the fact that it's gone.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
ANON, VIA EMAIL
Dear Anon,
Something you loved deeply has gone from your life, so of course you are sad. We love our pets differently from family members or friends and part of that is because we know they will probably die before us. Our time with our dogs or cats is precious precisely because we understand it is limited.
As humans, we go through most of life understanding we would die one day. But animals don’t. We are the keeper of the secret. Of course, living a life unencumbered(不受妨碍) by thoughts of death means that our pets, in general, lead very simple, happy lives. It’s one of the reasons why they are such a joy to be round. You are, of course, correct when you say that many people don't understand your grief, so don't talk to them. Share your feelings with like-minded souls. I'm sure a simple search online will reveal many practical advice for moving on.
And when you are ready, you can welcome another animal into your life and then you will enjoy happiness again.
GRAHAM, VIA EMAIL

One Saturday afternoon, I went to a fast food restaurant to have some food with my kids. As we were walking into the restaurant, I noticed a woman smoking a cigarette outside. While we were waiting in line, with about ten other people, we saw the woman rush back into the store to help the busy staff.
A customer standing next to us started yelling at the employee who had begun filling brown paper bags with fries, burgers, and nuggets, “I saw you,” she said. “I saw you out there smoking; then you came in straight and touched our food! It’s disgusting! Why would you do that?” The woman wouldn’t stop. Everyone was staring. The employee was getting teary. It looked as if she just wanted to find a place to hide. The manager came over and told her to wash her hands and leave the floor for a while. He then apologized to the customer.
“That’s disgusting,” my oldest son whispered to me, “But I do feel bad for her.” I was glad he followed it up with that last sentence. His comment showed me that he’d probably never treat someone the way that customer had treated that employee.
You are allowed to be angry at others’ improper behavior and tell them how you feel. However, you don’t need some audience or witnesses when you are making negative comments on others. Doing that in public doesn’t strengthen your point.
I’m willing to bet that the woman being criticized was so shamed that she wasn’t able to hear the message that was being forced down her throat. However, had the customer taken her aside, and said in a quiet voice, “I noticed you didn’t wash your hands after your smoke break; can you please go to do that now?” The employee would have had the opportunity to do just that. The message the customer wanted to convey would have gotten to that employee more effectively, and her entire day would not have been ruined.
1.Why was the customer so angry?
A.The employee smoked in front of her.
B.She was yelled at by people around her.
C.She had to wait in a long line for her food.
D.The employee touched food without washing hands.
2.How did the employee respond after hearing the customer’s words?
A.She felt confused and annoyed.
B.She turned to her manager for help.
C.She was very sad and embarrassed.
D.She dealt with the problem calmly.
3.The comments of the author’s oldest son indicated that he .
A.had sympathy for the employee
B.supported the customer’s behavior
C.cared little about the employee’s action
D.had experienced the situation many times
4.What does the author mainly want to convey?
A.We should treat every person equally.
B.We should always mind our behavior.
C.We should admit our mistakes bravely.
D.We should avoid criticizing someone in public.
