Many artists late in the last century were in search of a means to express their individuality. Modern dance was one of the ways some of these people sought to free their creative spirit. The beginnings of modem dance were happening before Isadora Duncan, but she was the first person to bring the new dance to general audiences and see it accepted and acclaimed.
Her search for a natural movement form sent her to nature. She believed movement should be as natural as the swaying of the trees and the rolling waves of the sea. Her great contributions are in three areas.
First, she began the expansion of the kinds of movements that could be used in dance. Before Duncan danced, ballet was the only type of dance performed in concerts. In the ballet the feet and legs were emphasized, with virtuosity (技巧高超) shown by complicated, codified positions and movements. Duncan performed dance by using all her body in the freest possible way. Her dance stemmed from (源自) her soul and spirit. She was one of the pioneers who broke tradition so others might be able to develop the art.
Her second contribution lies in dance costumes (服装). She discarded corset, ballet shoes, and stiff costumes. These were replaced with flowing clothes, bare feet, and unlimited hair. She believed in the natural body being allowed to move freely, and her dress displayed this ideal.
Her third contribution was in the use of music. In her performances she used the symphonies (交响乐) of great masters, including Beethoven and Wagner, which was not the usual custom.
She was as exciting and eccentric in her personal life as in her dance.

The idea of progress started to flower in the 17th century. At that time, many wise thinkers believed that man liberated(解放) by reason would rise to greater heights of achievement. The many expressions of human nature would be the engines of progress: language, business, science, and moral sensibility (道德感). Unfortunately, most of those engines have failed to bring the desired human progress.
The modern age has belonged to material progress and its main source has been science. Science gives people huge power to change the world. But can people be trusted to use it always for good? Think of biotechnology and information technology. And it is not just that scientific progress does not deliver the emotional good. People also fear that mankind is failing to manage science properly. The forests are disappearing; the ice is melting; privacy is leaking; life is becoming a depressing march in an ugly world.
The point is not that science is harmful, but that scientific progress needs to be mapped tidily onto human progress. That relies on moral sensibility in its widest sense. This liberal force offers hope for a better future. The very idea of moral sensibility probably sounds out﹣of﹣date. Bur researchers find that people desire a sense of moral purpose which would give life dignity (尊严). People want to determine how the world works, not always to be determined by it. Moral sensibility is why people will suffer from their beliefs, and why acts of noble self﹣sacrifice are so powerful.
It is admitted that our moral ideals will never be realized completely. But sometimes, however imperfectly, we can make progress. Human dignity requires the love of ideals for their own sake, but nothing requires that the love be returned.
Human progress is neither guaranteed nor hopeless. Instead, it is up to us.
1.What do we know about human progress from Paragraph 1?
A. Human beings were greatly liberated by the idea of progress.
B. Language failed to serve as an expression of human progress.
C. People began to think about human progress in the 17th century.
D. Many thinkers in the 17th century were optimistic about human progress.
2.Why does science fail to bring the desired human progress?
A. Scientific progress does not give people dignity.
B. Proper governing is not guaranteed in the use of science.
C. Science is misunderstood because of improper management.
D. The engine of progress is sensitive and unreliable.
3.What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Depressing life
B. Harmful science
C. Human progress
D. Moral sensibility
4.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To stress the function of the idea of progress.
B. To express concern about the death of moral sensibility.
C. To show the importance of moral sensibility in human progress.
D. To blame the harm of material progress to human development.

In today's Ireland, it seems hard to imagine the grim(令人沮丧的) days of the 19th century when so many of the population starved, or that, in those days, many poor people had no clue how to prepare any food other than boil a potato. 1.
Tourism has made a vast difference to the standards of cooking in Ireland. Until recently there was hardly any tradition of eating out in many districts, except perhaps on very few occasions at a local hotel. Patterns of diet were old-styled, based firmly on 'meat and two vegetables' (somewhat overcooked), potatoes (of course) and large quantities of dairy produce. 2. Tourist demands for predictable, inexpensive fast-food are met, as everywhere, with hamburgers and pizzas - a better bet being fish and chips. But more sophisticated tastes have introduced whole foods and vegetarian restaurants (almost unheard of before), and a vast number of new restaurants, often French in style, have opened in the main tourist centres. Food 'events' such as Kinsale's Gourmet festival or Galway's Oyster Festival attract large numbers of visitors and reflect the new interest in food.
Whatever Irish cooking lacks in finesse(精细), it nearly always makes up for in plenty, and ingredients(成分) are of a high quality. 3.. One of its great specialities is soda bread. It is made with buttermilk and is served fresh and warm with every meal. Recently there has been a return to simple Irish foods such as stews(炖菜)and potato dishes.
4.A 'traditional Irish breakfast' is a plateful of bacon and eggs with soda and potato breads. Accommodation rates are nearly always quoted(报价) with a full breakfast included. 5.
A. So you might as well eat enough to keep you going all day and get your money's worth!
B. Home-grown produce includes rich dairy foods, beef, lamb and pork, and a great variety of seafood.
C. Eating out at weekends is traditional in most parts of Ireland.
D. Now things are very different.
E. Food produce is fresher.
F. One of the best-value meals in Ireland is breakfast.
G. Nowadays, it is quite possible to eat both well and heartily all over the island.

The color of animals is by no means a matter of chance; it depends on many considerations, but in the majority of cases tends to protect the animals from danger by making it less outstanding Perhaps, it may be said that if coloring is mainly protective, there ought to be fewer brightly colored animals. 1.. The kingfisher itself, though so brightly colored, is not easy to see.
2.. Thus, for instance, the lion, and the wild donkey are all sand—colored. “Indeed, in the desert, neither trees, brushwood, nor even undulation (起伏) of the surface afford the slightest protection to its enemies.3..” says an expert.
The next point is the color of the mature caterpillars(毛虫), some of which are brown. This probably makes the caterpillar even more outstanding among the green leaves. What would you do if you were a big caterpillar? Why, like most other defenceless creatures, you would feed by night, and lie hidden by day. 4.. When the morning light comes, they go down the stem of the food plant, and hide among dry sticks and leaves around the ground, and it is obvious that under such circumstances the brown color really becomes a protection. While we may say as a general rule that the large caterpillars feed by night and hide by day, it is by no means always the case that they are brown: some of them still remain green.5., and that the brown color is a later adaptation.
A. So do these caterpillars
B. Therefore, the color of the animals is bright
C. We can say that they formed a good habit
D. Desert animals are generally the color of the desert
E. We may conclude that the habit of hiding themselves by day comes first
F. However, there are some cases where vivid colors are themselves protective
G. So the color of birds, snakes and even smaller animals, is of one uniform sand color

In the middle of the 20th century people were worried about whales. The number of whales killed worldwide came up to 66,000 per year. However, people weren't worried about the whale as an endangered animal.Instead, they were worried about the whale industry, which would disappear if there were no whales. In 1946,the International Whaling Commission was established. It limited the whale hunting for every country and controlled the whale industry. But the commission recognized that the limitation wasn't enough. They set a worldwide law against hunting whales with only two exceptions: the hunt for scientific research and "aboriginal whaling".Aboriginal whaling allows some countries to hunt a limited number of whales because it is a part of their culture. Some countries like Japan and Norway don't care about the law;they make excuses to hunt whales and sell the products. They only care about the money.
Many fishermen complain that dolphins, also a kind of whale, steal their fish. Therefore, they kill thousands of them.In fact, this is not the truth. In reality there are so many fishermen who steal the fish from each other. Some whale hunters say that they catch the animals for scientists. They have to research what whales are eating. For that, they kill them and look into their stomach. The truth is that they only want to sell the meat.Today scientists want to observe live whales for their research.
Many whale families are not protected and thousands of them are killed.Nobody knows if all whale families would survive, even if humans end all whale hunting today. The pollution of the oceans increases fast and the poison gets into the bodies of the animals. Many of them get sick and die.The human being has killed 90%-95% of many whale families.Others are already extinct.

By the mid-1920s, Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. had been one of the most celebrated men .In 1957, when Pablo Picasso was in his seventh decade, he joked that x-ray technology might one day reveal a lost work underneath one of his early paintings. Today, that prediction became reality although the technology involved goes far beyond x-rays.
Using hyper-modern tools to peer into one of his Blue Period paintings, researchers have not only shown a hidden piece of art history in astonishing new detail, they have revealed a striking amount of insight into Picasso's creative process and style.
The investigation focused on"La Miséreuse accroupie, "or" Crouching Woman, "painted in 1902 and currently owned by the Art Gallery. The painting, an oil on canvas (画布) piece drawing a crouching (蜷坐的) woman who wears a long coat, shows Picasso’s typical Blue Period colors: grey, green, blue and white. It shows that the innovative modernist was inspired by the lines of an underlying landscape painted by an unknown artist.
The analysis also exposes several changes to the woman described in the painting, many of which Picasso ultimately abandoned. Researchers released their findings on Saturday’s press conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Austin, Texas. “We think now it's a landscape painted by someone enrolled at the fine arts academy in Barcelona, someone in Picasso’s orbit but not in his close circle, ”says Kenneth Brummel, assistant curator of modern art for the Art Gallery of Ontario.
As to why Picasso would have “recycled” another artist’s canvas(油画布), reasons could range from economic necessity, as a young artist still establishing himself, to deep inspiration driven by the lines of the image already laid down there. Picasso often re-used canvases for this reason."
“He didn't shave off the canvas or put a preparatory layer over it,” Brummel says.“ Picasso saw this landscape, found inspiration, and decided he was going to paint it immediately."
1.According to the text ,the most likely process of Picasso's painting?
①Picasso reused another artist's canvas.
②Inspired by a landscape painting, Picasso decided to paint one too.
③Picasso painted a woman on the landscape painting.
④Not happy with the landscape, Picasso covered it totally.
⑤Picasso made changes to the woman
A.②③④ B.④②③
C.①③⑤ D.②①④
2.How did Picasso deal with the landscape painting?
A.He reused it because he hated wasting anything.
B.He hid his own paintings beneath the landscape.
C.He took the advantage of it and created a new one.
D.He kept it to himself with the permission of its owner.
3.What can we infer from the passage?
A.People often celebrated Picasso’s success.
B.Picasso was not well-off when he started his career.
C.Picasso became successful overnight.
D.Picasso was good at imitating other artists’ works.
4.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Picasso's predication turned out to be joke.
B.High technology uncovered art mysteries.
C.Seeing is not always believing.
D.Lost Artwork Found Under Famous Picasso Painting.
