Global warming is the increase of the earth’s average surface temperature due to the effect of greenhouse gases, for example, carbon dioxide, which trap heat that would otherwise escape from the earth. After the trees are cut down and more greenhouse gases are released, the “blanket” around the earth called the ozone layer (臭氧层), will get thicker. This catches more heat and makes the earth hotter. Luckily, there are many things that every citizen of the earth can do to help reduce the effects of global warming, and it’s never too late or too early for children to take action.
The children should learn what a carbon footprint is. A carbon footprint is the amount of carbon and greenhouse gases people make as they lead the daily life and go about the normal activities. In other words, the carbon footprint is a measure of the environmental impact (冲击) the life has. To live an environmentally friendly life that doesn’t contribute to global warming, people want to have the smallest carbon footprint possible.
Almost everything people do contributes to global warming and is related to fossil fuel consumption. These can be direct uses of fossil fuels, like riding in a gasoline-powered car, or indicrect contributions to greenhouse gases, such as eating fruits or vegetables that had to be shipped from far way to reach their tables.
If a child wants to make a contribution to reducing global warming, he should ride a bicycle to the near park, school, his friend’s house, or anywhere else instead of taking the car. Or he may try to walk or jog, which is also helpful. In addition, although trains and buses often run on fossil fuels, on average, each person uses less energy and produces less pollution to run. Next time if children with their parents have to get around town or it’s too far to walk or bike, take the bus or other public transportation instead of asking for a ride.
1.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.A brief description of carbon footprint
B.The serious water pollution.
C.The protection of ozone layer.
D.The causes of global warming
2.Which of the following can describe the carbon footprint?
A.Useless. B.Expensive.
C.Helpful. D.Attractive.
3.What can kids do if they want to help reduce global warming?
A.Go to the near park by bus.
B.Walk or cycle as much as possible.
C.Keep staying at home or school.
D.Go around the town with parents by car.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.What Can People Do to Use Less Energy?
B.How Can Kids Help Reduce Global Warming?

D.Why Global Warming Affects Humans’ Life?

When the natural climate changes due to global warming, it can surely affect seals. The majority of them live in the Antarctic region so as the ice is melting, their natural habitat(栖息地)can be seriously affected. These changes don’t take place overnight. They can be the result of many years of additional temperatures in the area. The seals then have to find ways to adapt.
Seals depend on the cool air currents to bring plenty of food for them. When the temperatures get higher, there is less and less food and the seal population starts to get depleted. Mothers aren’t healthy enough to feed their babies. Many of them end up abandoned as the mothers have to leave to find their own source of food.
The fact that their desire to produce young can be changed by the warmer temperatures is frightening too. It is also believed that the warmer temperatures can allow different diseases and viruses to attack the seals. This is a huge concern as they can rapidly wipe out huge numbers of seals out there.
However, these changes in climate and temperature aren’t all bad for other species of seals. Scientists have found that those living in warmer climates are producing more young due to the changes. Research also shows that the females are moving further to find food and water. When they are out of the reach of the governing males, they are more willing to accept the moves of other males in the group.
This is good news too because it means that there will be more selection in the gene pool(基因库)for future generations. It can help the seals as a species adapt to changes in their natural environment more easily.
The climate change problem for seals is directly linked to humans. When we take action to change what we let out into the environment, we will make positive changes for the seals. However, it is going to take a very long time to reverse(彻底改变)the effects of what has already been done.
1.What does the author regard climate changes for seals as?
A. An unavoidable disaster for existence.
B. A double-edged sword.
C. A mirror of evolution
D. A requirement for more choice in the gene pool.
2.What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Explode B. Disappear
C. Shrink D. Vary
3.What will happen to the seals in warmer climates?
A. Their number will be on the increase
B. The female seals will be in the lead.
C. Their genes will change a great deal.
D. The females will keep away from the males.
4.Which the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Importance of Protecting Seals.
B. Seals’ adaptation to Climate Change.
C. How Climate Change Affects Seals.
D. Why Are Seals Becoming Less and Less.

We have proof that you become what you eat. When you know the effects of different types of food, you can use your knowledge well and eat what you want to become.
Food has an impact on our physical and mental health. Have you ever heard any of the following advice?
Lettuce (莴苣) or milk can make you sleepy.
To stop feeling sleepy you should eat peanuts or dried fish.
Everyone has their own advice to give, which they have read about or have been told by older relatives. Some of these pieces of advice seem to contradict each other.
Eating chocolate makes you fat and gives you spots.
Chocolate contains the essential minerals: iron and magnesium (镁).
What we need to figure out is what type of chocolate to eat to get the benefits and how much of it to eat. We can do this by reading the list of ingredients (原料) on the chocolate bar package. Exactly how much real chocolate is in there? And how much of that do we need to eat to get the benefits of the minerals it contains?
Future restaurants might be named after the physical or mental state they hope to create. Their menus will list the benefits of each dish and drink. Some restaurants have already started this concept, and list the nutritional (营养的) content of their dishes on the menus.
Let’s take the restaurant “Winners” as an example. Their menu would list dishes specifically designed to help you win sports competitions. Or you could choose the Go-faster salad, which is a large bowl of mixed raw vegetables in a light salad dressing, giving you energy without making you gain weight. And what kind of dishes do you think would be on the menu at the “Clever Café”?
So what’s going to happen to hamburgers and biscuits? Will the concept of eating food, because it’s tasty, go out of fashion? Of course not! Junk food is also changing. If ice-cream is not good for children, can’t we give them fat-free, sugar-free tofu ice-cream? Unhealthy food is going out of fashion, so brands are changing. We are told not to drink cola because of the sugar and caffeine content so cola companies are making sugar-free and caffeine-free drinks. We are told dried fruit is a healthier snack than biscuits so some biscuit companies are making biscuits with added vitamins.
1.By saying “you become what you eat”, the writer means that ________.

3.How can we eat chocolate properly, according to the passage?
A.To eat chocolate containing the essential minerals.
B.To read the list of ingredients on the package.
C.To get advice from others before eating real chocolate.
D.To learn how much chocolate we can consume before eating.
4.Which is true about the future restaurants?
A.The food in “Winners” can ensure you to win sports competitions.
B.They might list the nutritional content of their dishes on the menus.
C.Hamburgers will disappear in these restaurants.
D.The Go-faster salad helps you go faster.
5.The concept of eating tasty food will not go out of fashion because ________.
A.the junk food companies are changing their brand names
