Grandmothers don’t always have common sense in the ways of social media, but an Arizona woman’s wrong-way text has made her an Internet star.

Wanda Dench thought she was texting a Thanksgiving invitation to her grandson, but the person who received it was a total stranger, Jamal Hilton, a college student. He was having lunch earlier this week when the invitation showed up on his cellphone. He didn’t recognize the phone number, so he wrote back asking who sent it.

“Your grandma,” Dench wrote back. “Grandma?” Hinton replied, “Can I have a picture?”

“That s strange,” Dench thought. But she dutifully took a selfile (自拍) of herself at work and texted it.

You are not my grandma,” Hilton said, “Can I still get a plate there?” Dench was embarrassed at her mistake, but quickly recovered.

Of course you can, ”she wrote back. “That’s what grandmas do... feed everyone.”

Dench is white. Hilton is African American. The student took a screenshot (屏幕截图) of the conversation and posted it on Twitter, where it’s been retweeted (转发) more than 150,000 times.

Dench didn’t know that Hilton had posted their exchange online. Then her phone blew up. In just a few days, she received more than 600 text messages and lots of voicemail because her phone number was included in the screeshot.

“At first I thought, ‘Well, this is annoying,’ until I started reading some of the people’s texts.” she said. Strangers wrote, “Thank you so much. You’re such a kind person to let this young man into your home.” She said, “I think this may be a little more important than what I thought it was because of the racial tension that’s in the country.”

Dench and Hilton met in person on Wednesday night at her home. She formally invited him and his family to Thanksgiving dinner. He accepted.

Have you ever wondered why the roots of the plants always know which way to grow—into the soil but not above it? Some British scientists have recently solved this mystery.

It turns out that roots have special hairs that tie them into the soil and help them grow their way past obstacles, a team at the John Inners Center in Norwich reports in the February 29 issue of Journal Science.

“The key is in the fuzzy(有绒毛的)coat of hairs on the roots of plants,” says professor Liam Dolan. “We have found a growth control system that enables these hairs to find their way and to become longer when their path is clear.”

Root hairs explore the soil in much the same way a person would feel their way in the dark. If they come across an obstacle, they make their way around until they can continue growing in an opening. In the meantime, the plant is held in place as the hairs grip(紧紧抓住)the soil.

The hairs are guided by a clever chemical trick. A protein(蛋白质) at the tip of the root hairs called RHD2 helps them to take calcium(钙) from the soil. Calcium makes the hairs grow, and produce more RHD2, and take more calcium.

But when an obstacle blocks the hair’s path, or the hair reaches the surface of the soil, the cycle is broken and growth starts in another direction.

This system gives plants the flexibility to explore a complex environment and to live in even the most unpromising soils, says Dolan.

In poor soils such as in parts of Australia and Africa, native plants have adapted by producing enormous numbers of root hairs. A better understanding of this adaptation will allow scientists to develop hairy rooted crops that can grow in unfriendly environments.

According to Dolan, “Research in the John Inners Center is taking a breeding approach to increase hair length in wheat but it will be some time before new cultivars(栽培变种) are developed.”

This is a great question that is unfortunately difficult to answer. I can only give you my views on this topic, which may or may not be correct. I know that my sense of humour developed over time.

When I was younger I was not funny at all, now I can easily make people laugh. At the same time, sometimes I say things that I think are very funny but others do not. Improving wit and humour, I believe, is an ongoing process.

Now, there are various forms of humour and everyone has their individual style. Overall, I believe being fluent in a language is very important for being witty or funny. The way we play around with words adds the “funny” tag to an otherwise normal sentence.

Also, seeing irony is very important. I think humour is often the link between two unrelated things.

In my experience, laughing frequently and appreciating other people’s jokes and wit are very important. Within these, finding humour in everyday normal situations is the key.

I often notice what is going on around me and say funny things in my head and laugh to myself. That serves almost as practice for when I am in a group. I watch comedy shows and movies and I am sure that has some effect on helping me improve my sense of humour.

And last, having confidence that you are witty is important. There will always be someone wittier or funnier than you, which is fine. Just work on building your own style.

Remember, if you are trying to be funny and witty in order to break the ice at a business function, be careful.

In those situations, humour has to be mild and politically correct.
