In my high school English class in a small Mississippi town, Miss Denman tried to insert our sleepy heads that every novel had to do one of the three things: tell something; show something; prove something. She then read us one she considered a piece of perfect writing because it achieved all the three things: The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, whose remaining stories and essays have now been published.

As Miss Denman began reading — “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full summer day; the flowers were blossoming(开花)freely and the grass was richly green” — we were calmed into “the square between the post office and the bank” of a small American town, where all 300 citizens are met. Ours was a Gothic world and Shirley Jackson seemed to our ears like Flannery O’Connor without the Georgia accent.

Forty years passed before I read anything else by Shirley Jackson. Then I happened upon her final novel — We Have Always Lived in the Castle, published in 1962, three years before her death in 1965 — a true excellent work　 whose young main female character, Merricat Blackwood, is as precocious(早熟的)and worth remembering as any young people in the 20th-century American novels. She describes: “I dislike washing myself, and dogs, and noise. I like my sister Constance, and my uncle Julian, and the poisonous mushroom. Everyone else in my family is dead.” Six years ago Blackwood’s parents, an aunt, and a younger brother were murdered — poisoned with arsenic(砒霜).

Fifty years after her untimely death, Let Me Tell You, a new reminder of how excellent a writer Shirley Jackson came out. The stories, essays, and lectures in this brilliant new collection include some published before and some able to the public for the first time. The title comes from the book’s only unfinished story, about two 14-year-old friends, the spoiled daughters of rich fathers. Their snobbery(势利)performances counteract beliefs of classlessness in American: “My father is a lawyer. It’s important what your father is. Also it’s important to have a swimming pool, only not the biggest swimming pool of all and of course no one would dream of going near it.” The reader is eager to know what happens but even Jackson’s finished stories are rarely tied up with appropriate endings. She counted on the reader to make an effort.

Let Me Tell You feels like a direct communication from beyond the tomb with the writer. This is especially true of her essays on the skill of writing. With the publication of Let Me Tell You, Shirley Jackson can now enjoy a peace with a new world of readers. The woman of Gothic psychological novel can truly rest in peace.

“I’m the smartest kid in class.” We all want our kids to be self-confident, but unrealistic perception(认知) of their academic abilities, a new study finds, damage a child’s relationship with others in the classroom: The more one student feels unrealistically superior(更好的) to another, the less the two students like each other.

Katrin Rentzsch of Bamberg University in Germany first became interested in the effects of such self-perception when she was studying how people became labeled as nerds(书呆子). “I really got interested in the question of whether it’s OK to boast(吹嘘) about achievements,” she says.

This line of thinking led her towards something psychologists call “self-enhancement” －when a person feels unrealistically superior to someone else. So Rentzsch and her colleague Michela Schroder-Abe decided to take a closer look at how such self-enhancement affects relationships, so they turned to the eighth-grade classroom, somewhere they could measure differences between actual academic performance, and social popularity. The 358 students came from 20 eighth-grade classes in schools in southeast Germany.

The researchers asked each student to rate their classmates, in terms of their likability and of their feelings of academic superiority. They then compared those ratings with the students’ grades in math, physics, German and English. Importantly, they conducted the analysis at two different social levels: “habitual”－the way people act in general, and “relationship”－the way someone acts around a specific individual.

In future work, Rentzsch would like to look at these effects on adults, perhaps specifically in team work. She’s also interested in self-enhancement beyond academic achievements, for example physical attractiveness. And another question to explore is why students overestimate their academic abilities. Perhaps it is because of too much praise from their parents or teachers.

It is very important for people to drink water in our everyday life. Many people believe they are supposed to drink eight glasses of water a day, or about two liters. Why? Because that is what they have been told all their life. But a recent report offers some different advice. Experts say people should obey their bodies; they should drink as much water as they feel like drinking. The report says most healthy people meet their daily needs for liquid by letting thirst be their guide. The report is from the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academies. The report contains some general suggestions. The experts say women should get about 2.7 liters of water daily. Men should get about 3.7 liters. But wait——in each case, that is more than eight glasses.

There is one important difference. The report does not tell people how many glasses of water to drink. In fact, the experts say it may be impossible to know how many glasses are needed to meet these guidelines. This is because the daily water requirement can include the water content in foods. People do not get water only by forcing themselves to drink a set number of glasses per day. People also drink fruit juices and sodas and milk. They drink coffee and tea. These all contain water. Yet some also contain caffeine. This causes the body to expel(排出)more water. But the writers of the report say this does not mean the body loses too much water.

As you might expect, the Institute of Medicine says people need to drink more water when they are physically active. The same is true of those who live in hot climates. Depending on heat and activity, people could need two times as much water as others do. All this, however, does not answer one question. No one seems sure why people have the idea that good health requires eight glasses of water daily.

It may have started with a misunderstanding. In 1945, the National Academy of Sciences published some guidelines. Its Food and Nutrition Board(营养膳食) said a good amount of water for most adults was 2.5 liters daily. This was based on an average of one milliliter(毫升)for each calorie of food eaten. But that was only part of what the board said. It also said that most of this amount is contained in prepared foods.
