I hardly have any good memories of my summer holidays two years ago. All I can remember is that I was busy doing drugs with my friends for most of the time. I said to myself that I would give up drugs before I went back to school, but when school started I was still addicted to them.
I went back to school like the other students but I had become a very different person. Most students came back to school with smiles on their faces, but not me. I became a different person that didn't care about anything but drugs. It was like I was walking around in a different body.
I went from being an above average student to a really bad student. I started to do things that I never thought I would do before -like bullying(恐吓)students, and fighting with people just because they looked at me in the wrong way. I rarely smiled or played sports like I used to. I was always moody and angry with my friends and teachers. I started to skip school(逃学)once or twice a week. No one seemed to care,so I was soon absent nearly everyday. I started stealing money from my parents and I lied to other people just to get some money for drugs. When my parents found out that I stole their money and sold their jewellery, they got really angry. I started to hang out with my drug addict friends for days and nights without going back home. I even slept by the side of the road and woke up without caring what people would think about me.
Now I have changed a lot. Drugs are terrible. Stay away from them.
1.Two years ago when the summer holiday was over, the author .
A.made many good friends B.was busy doing his school work
C.kept doing drugs D.gave up drugs
2.When the author was addicted to drugs, he .
A.went to school as usual B.became a top student in his class
C.didn't play sports as before D.liked to sleep by the side of the road
3.From the passage we can infer that once a person is addicted to drugs, .
A.it is difficult to give it up B.it is easy to get rid of it
C.it has no influence on his life D.it will be easy for him to steal money

What is it that makes people laugh? More than two thousand years ago the ancient Greek philosopher (哲学家) Aristotle defined (定义) jokes as the pleasure that results from a feeling of triumph by showing we’re better than someone else in a certain way. According to Aristotle and many other philosophers, all jokes depend mainly on showing inferiority in another person or group of persons — that is,putting it clearly,on showing that they are worse off than ourselves. Jokes raise our good opinion of ourselves at someone else’s expense.
Showing how much better than other people we are is only one reason we like jokes. Someone may also use a joke to express their anger or their cruelty (残酷)or any other kind of action that is not acceptable to us. We feel free to laugh when we hear about someone sliding on a banana skin. The joke lets us express those attitudes which are usually unacceptable to society. This is probably the reason why some of the jokes, especially those involving cruelty, are so popular with certain people.
Besides, all jokes depend on our enjoyment of laughing at something that is strange and out of place because it’s different from things which are happening around it. The same situation can be either sad or pleasant, depending entirely on how strange and out of place it is. If a girl in a bathing suit falls into a swimming pool,we don’t laugh because nothing unusual has happened. But if a man in a smart suit falls in,the situation is at once unusual in a pleasant way and we laugh. A good joke-teller will always try to build up a situation in which one thing is expected until something unexpected suddenly happens, and so we laugh.
1.The underlined word “inferiority” (in Paragraph 1) means ______.
A.someone that is better than someone else
B.something that is better than something else
C.someone that is as good as someone else
D.something that is not as good as something else
2.According to Aristotle, all jokes depend mainly on ______.
A.resulting in a sense of success
B.showing inferiority in another person or group
C.having a good opinion of other people
D.making people laugh unexpectedly
3.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.To express those attitudes usually unacceptable to society is one of the reasons we like jokes.
B.When people are angry, they would like to hear jokes.
C.People who like jokes are usually cruel.
D.Showing we are better than other people is the only one reason we like jokes.
4.What will a good joke-teller always try to do?
A.Make an unexpected thing happen in an expected situation
B.Make different things happen at the same time.
C.Make a sad situation into a pleasant one.
D.Make people laugh at something unusual and out of place.

Many years ago, my dad decided to volunteer at the local children hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He would talk to them and play with them and do arts and crafts with them.
There was a girl, Karen, who had been admitted with a rare disease that paralyzed (使麻痹) her from the neck down. She was very depressed (沮丧的). My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up against a backing, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. Only his head would move. He would visit her whenever he could and paint for her, telling her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.”
At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was discharged (允许出院) because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. Some time later, my dad was at the volunteer counter in the lobby (门厅) of the hospital when Karen came in. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave my dad a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read “Thank you for helping me walk”.
My dad would cry every time he told us this story. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than doctors, and my dad who died just a few months after the little girl gave him the picture—loved every single child in that hospital.

A.Because he liked pictures very much.
B.Because she wanted to thank him for his help.
C.Because he was badly ill.

4.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The girl was discharged after she had recovered from her disease.
B.The girl became a famous painter at the end.
C.The girl who paralyzed from the neck down could do nothing.
D.Love has a magic power and can make wonders.

I have learned something about myself since I moved from Long Island to Florida three years ago. Even though I own a home in Port St. Lucie just minutes from the ocean, an uncontrollable urge wells up to return to Long Island even as others make their way south. I guess I am a snowbird stuck in reverse. Instead of enjoying Florida’s mild winters, I willingly endure the severe weather on Long Island, the place I called home for 65 years.
I’m like a migratory bird (候鸟) that has lost its sense of timing and direction, my wings flapping against season.
So what makes me fly against the tide of snowbirds? The answer has a lot to do with my reluctance to give up the things that define who I am. Once I hear that the temperature on Long Island has dipped into the range of 40 to 50 degrees, I begin to long for the sight and crackling sound of a wood fire. I also long for the bright display of colors -- first in the fall trees, and then in the lights around homes and at Rockefeller Center. Floridians decorate too, but can’t create the special feel of a New England winter.
I suppose the biggest reason why I return is to celebrate the holidays with people I haven’t seen in months. What could be better than sitting with family and friends for a Thanksgiving turkey dinner, or watching neighbors children excitedly open gifts on Christmas? Even the first snowfall seems special. I especially enjoy seeing a bright red bird settling on a snow-covered branch. (My wife and I spend winters at a retirement community in Ridge, and I’m grateful that I don’t have to shovel.)
While these simple pleasures are not unique to Long Island, they are some of the reasons why I come back. Who says you can’t go home?
1.What does the underlined word “reluctance” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Coincidence. B.Expectation. C.Unwillingness. D.Motivation.
2.Which of the following words can best describe the author?
A.Imaginative and outspoken. B.Hard-working and serious.
C.Homesick and easy-going. D.Anxious and painful.
3.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To describe his dream to be a free bird.
B.To explain the reasons for moving from his hometown.
C.To praise the beauty and warmth of his hometown.
D.To express his feeling of missing his hometown.

Rosie Dutton, a teacher from Relax Kids in Tamworth, UK, used two apples to show her students the often unseen but harmful effects of school bullying (欺凌).
She posted the lesson on Facebook, where it's been shared more than 160,000 times. Rosie Dutton explained that during one of her classes she presented the children with two red apples. What the kids didn't know was that before the lesson, she had repeatedly dropped one of the apples on the floor. And yet, on the outside at least, both apples looked perfect.
“I picked up the apple I'd dropped on the floor and started to tell the children how I disliked this apple, “ Dutton wrote. “I told them that because I didn't like it, I didn't want them to like it either, so they should call it names too. “ Some of the children looked at her as if she were “crazy” , but the students passed the apple around the circle, calling it names.
Continuing the exercise, the teacher then passed the second apple around the circle. This apple, however, was showered with words like “Your skin is beautiful” and “What a beautiful colour you have” .
Dutton then showed the students both apples once again, stressing that “there was no change, and both apples still looked the same. “
Finally, Dutton cut both apples open. The apple that the class treated kindly looked fresh inside. But the other apple-the one they'd treated poorly-was bruised(碰伤的)beneath its skin.
“I think there was a light bulb moment for the children immediately, “ Dutton said. “When people are bullied, especially children, they feel horrible inside and sometimes don't show or tell others how they are feeling. If we hadn't cut that apple open, we would never have known how much pain we had caused it. “
Dutton explained how important it is to teach children to stand up for one another, and to stop any form of bullying.
“Let's create a generation of kind caring children, “ the teacher wrote. “The tongue has no bones, but is strong enough to break a heart. So be careful with your words. “
1.What had the teacher done to the first apple before the lesson?
A.She had introduced it to the kids. B.She had coloured it bright.
C.She had made it look perfect. D.She had damaged it purposely.
2.What does the underlined part “call it names” (Para. 3) mean?
A.Shout at it. B.Make fun of it. C.Cheer for it. D.Say rude things.
3.What did the teacher tell the kids to do with the second apple?
A.Drop it. B.Praise it. C.Ignore it. D.Respect it.
4.What's the purpose of the teacher's using two apples in class?
A.To draw the kids’ attention.
