Cleaning your plate may not help feed hungry children today, but the timeworn advice of mothers everywhere may help reduce food waste from the farm to the fork, help the environment and make it easier to feed the world’s growing population.
Hard data still being collected, but experts in Chicago said about 30% to 50% of the food produced in the world goes uneaten. The average American throws away 33 pounds of food each month—about $40 worth, which means each person throws away almost 400 pounds of food. The US Department of Agriculture says that 23% of eggs and an even higher percentage of produce ends up in the trash.
“We forget we have all these fresh fruits and vegetables, and at the end of the week we have to throw them away”, said Esther Gove, a mother of three young children in South Berwick, Maine. “Now, I don’t buy as much fresh produce as I used to.”
But the effect of food waste arrives far beyond the kitchen. Agriculture is the world’s largest user of water, a big consumer of energy and major emitter of greenhouse gases during production. Experts say reducing waste is a simple way to cut stress on the environment and can ease pressure on farmers, who will be called on to feed an expected 9 billion people around the world in 2050, compared with nearly 7 billion today.
No matter how sustainable (可持续的) farming is, if the food’s not getting eaten, it’s not sustainable and it’s not a good use of our resources. In richer nations, fruit and vegetables end up in the trash because they aren’t pretty enough to meet companies’ standards, have gone bad in a home refrigerator or aren’t eaten at a restaurant. In developing countries, much food spoils before it gets to market due to poor roads and lack of refrigeration. High food prices are another reason, since some people can’t afford the food that’s produced.
1.From the first paragraph, we know that cleaning your plate ________.
A. is you mother’s best advice for you
B. can solve certain problems for the world
C. can help feed hungry children all over the world
D. helps meet the growing population’s needs

Children today spend less time outdoors than ever before and it may be harmful not only to their physical health, but also to their cognitive (认知的) development.
A year-long study, recently published in the Sciences, found that elementary school children who were exposed to more green space within or directly outside their school showed improved learning and memory. The findings reinforce (加强) that of a recent six-year study on 905 Massachusetts public elementary schools, which found that students in schools that had more “greenness” in their surroundings reported higher scores on standardized testing in English and math. “There is an expanding body of scientific evidence linking the human experience in the natural world to better physical and mental health and improved cognitive abilities,” journalist Richard Louv, co-founder of the Children & Nature Network, said in an email to The Huffington Post. “An increasing number of homeschoolers, nature preschools, independent primary and secondary schools, and forward-thinking public schools are incorporating (并入) nature experience into learning.”
The new study was conducted on more than 2,500 children in second, third and fourth grade at 36 primary schools in Barcelona, Spain. Researchers found that the students who attended schools with more green space showed a 5 percent improvement in the short-term memory that’s critical for reasoning, learning and comprehension. But their inattentiveness decreased slightly.
Spending time outside could have a number of benefits for children beyond improved memory and attention. Another recent study found that adventurous outdoor play such as climbing, rough and tumble (翻筋斗) play, and exploring alone improves children’s physical health while also help them develop creativity and social skills greatly.
Some schools are starting to take notice, creating more space for children to enjoy being in nature, including community gardens, outdoor playgrounds and small parks.
1.What did the study lasting a year find?
A. The cognitive abilities of children today decreased.
B. The findings of another six-year study were incorrect.
C. Being exposed to nature was beneficial to the learning of pupils.
D. Students had higher scores on testing in English and math than before.
2.According to the passage, what can we know about Richard Louv?
A. He discourages students from getting close to nature to gain experience.
B. He is one of the founders of the Children & Nature Network.
C. He conducted the study on 905 Massachusetts public elementary schools.
D. He often contributes articles to The Huffington Post.
3.Spending time in green space may have little effect on children’s __________.
A. inattentiveness B. creativity
C. communication D. learning
4.In which column of a newspaper can you see this article?
A. Entertainment. B. Travel.
C. Parenting. D. Education.

When was the last time you used plastic plates? Next time, why not try some edible ones? You’ll help the environment and your guests won’t go hungry.
“I used to work in school catering and saw a lot of money being thrown away. I thought that was criminal, so I decided to do something about it,” said Italian school chef Tiziano Vicentini.
Now, Vicentini has an amazing range of edible plates for schools. The plates are made out of bread dough, so you can eat them afterwards. “These dishes cost a few pennies each and are either eaten by the kids, or go into recycling bins for animal food,” explained Vicentini, 50, of Milan.
But now other companies are developing edible plates, too. The Edible Plate Company offers edible plates, bowls, trays and cups. Their products are environmentally-friendly, 100% biodegradable and can be used for all types of catering and home use. And they’re made from a natural plant. After use, they can be fed to animals or left to degrade naturally. They also have a range of cutlery (餐具)made from corn and potato starch (淀粉).
These plates will also help reduce the amount of plastic we create. Waste from plastic causes damage to the environment, costing governments millions in waste management. Plastic bags often end up in landfill sites. And the burning of plastic waste causes toxic gases that pollute the air.
In response to this, governments around the world are introducing tough recycling regulations. And many shops are offering biodegradable plastic bags and eco-safe packaging on their products. To help matters, the International Organization for Standardization (the ISO) has also developed a system to evaluate the biodegradability of products, with a certification and logo scheme. Meanwhile, how about a nice plate for lunch?
1.Which of the following is not the advantage of edible plates?
A. They are expensive. B. They can degrade naturally.
C. They are environmentally-friendly. D. They are made from natural plant.
2.Which of the following statements is true?
A. Tiziano is from Germany.
B. Edible plates are only used for school catering,
C. Corn and potato starch can be used to make cutlery.
D. The Edible Plate Company doesn’t produce edible bowls.
3.What does the underlined word “this” refer to?
A. The air pollution.
B. The edible cutlery.
C. The toxic gases caused by the burning of plastic.
D. The damage to the environment caused by plastic waste.
4.What is the main idea of this passage?
A. The measures to stop the pollution.
B. The ways to reduce the plastic waste.
C. How to make edible plates from natural plants.
D. The plate solution to eating and environmental problem.
