Mrs Smith trembled with excitement when she was told her fortunes. “Somebody is coming home to you,” Mrs Gray said slowly. “He’s carrying a rifle on his back and he’s almost there.”
Mrs Smith felt as if she could hardly breathe. “And there he is!” Mrs Gray cried, pointing to the road. They all rushed to the door to look.
A man in a blue coat, with a gun on his back, was walking down the road toward the Smith farm. His face was hidden by a large pack on his back.
Laughing and crying, Mrs Smith grabbed her hat and her children and ran out of Mrs Gray’s house. She hurried down the road after him, calling his name and pulling her children along with her. But the soldier was too far away for her voice to reach him.
When she got back to their farm, she saw the man standing by the fence. He was looking at the little house and the field of yellow wheat. The sun was almost touching the hills in the west. The cowbells rang softly as the animals moved toward the barn (畜棚).
“How peaceful it all is,” Private Smith thought. “How far away from the battles, the hospitals, the wounded and the dead. My little farm in Wisconsin. How could I have left it for those years of killing and suffering?”
Trembling and weak with emotion, Mrs Smith hurried up to her husband. Her feet made no sound on the grass, but he turned suddenly to face her. For the rest of his life, he would never forget her face at that moment.
“Emma!” he cried.
The children stood back watching their mother kissing this strange man. He saw them, and kneeling down, he pulled from his pack three huge red apples. In a moment, all three children were in their father’s arms. Together, the family entered the little unpainted farmhouse.
Later that evening, after supper, Smith and his wife went outside. The moon was bright, above the eastern hills. Sweet, peaceful stars filled the sky as the night birds sang softly, and tiny insects buzzed in the soft air.
His farm needed work. His children needed clothing. He was no longer young and strong. But he began to plan for next year. With the same courage he had faced the war, Private Smith faced his difficult future.
1.Why could Mrs Smith hardly breathe when told her fortunes?
A. She had a sudden heart attack and almost lost consciousness.
B. She was shocked by the scene of a man with a rifle on his back.
C. She was overjoyed on hearing the return of her husband.
D. She ran out of the house too fast to catch her breath.

A. The moment expected for years would be a life-long memory.
B. He had almost forgotten her face after those years’ suffering.
C. He was shocked by the excitement written on her face.
D. He was afraid to be apart from her again.
3.What’s Private Smith’s attitude towards the future life?
A. Skeptical. B. Confused. C. Hopeful. D. Concerned.
4.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A. An Unexpected Visitor
B. Husband and Wife
C. The Return of a Private
D. The Smiths

My six-year-old came home from school this week with two envelopes. One was for a donation to help people in the Philippines. The other was to help hungry families have a Thanksgiving meal.
“I’ll put a check in each of these. Then you can add your own money from your piggy bank, okay?” I said, thinking he’d be so excited to put his own stamp on things.
“That’s okay, mom. You put money in. I don’t want to waste mine,” he sweetly sang as he colored. “I want to fill my bank all the way up.”
Ack! I guess I know what our dinnertime discussion will be about tonight, I thought.
I had figured that through watching his parents donate items, helping us take toys from time to time to needy kids and putting money in the basket at church, he would just understand why it was important to help people in need — and even want to do it himself.
But of course he doesn’t really understand yet. “There’s a big disconnect between the people ‘over there’ and my piggy bank,” said parenting educator Vicki Hoefle.
“There’s nothing wrong with the child. There’s just no connection.”
As for having that conversation immediately, or forcing my son to put money into the envelopes: “Try not to do it now,” Hoefle said. Teaching a child about donating their own money or toys or time to people in need “should be a gentle introduction into what we hope will be a way of life for our kids.”
She suggested these things to help children understand the importance of giving:
* Just talk about it. Then explore the issue from a perspective he can understand.
* Use the course of a year to introduce kids to opportunities. That way, they won’t be shocked when you ask them to stuff their own money into an envelope (like this writer just did).
* Pick a family charity for the year and have a conversation about how you all can help throughout the year.
* Think of this not as something you must teach, but as something to expose them to.
At her house, Hoefle said, “When you got something new, you gave something up.” Each birthday, her children would pick what toys they had outgrown and give them away. “There was a comfort in it. It just became a natural part of the kids’ lives.”
So I will fill those envelopes alone this time. But I’ll make sure he understands why they should be filled—gradually.
1.When the writer asked her son to give money to help the poor, he __________.
A. declined to donate
B. sang a sweet song
C. put all his money in a bank
D. seemed very surprised
2.Hoefle’s attitude towards children’s unwillingness to donate money can be best described as “_______”.
A. critical B. tolerant C. positive D. worried
3.Which of the following is Hoefle’s approach to educating kids about charity?
A. Giving courses about charity.
B. Setting a rule for children to give.
C. Inviting a lot of poor people home.
D. Giving children enough real life chances.
4.What can we learn about the writer from the passage?
A. She often makes donations for people in need.
B. She taught her son a lesson over dinner that evening.
C. She is at a loss as for what she should do next.
D. She invited a parenting educator home for advice.
5.What is the best title of the passage?
A. Kids, please help those in need.
B. Why are kids unwilling to donate?
C. Kindness is lost in the young generation.
D. How can we help kids learn generosity?

John Perry decided it was time to go home. It had been a perfect day. He had filled his bag with all sorts of seashells, enough to study for a month. The island had been a good place to find shell but mow the sun was going down, he must leave before it got dark. He came to the sand reef that connected the island and the shore of the mainland. He stopped for a moment to enjoy the sunset on the ocean water. Then he began to walk along the sand reef toward the shore.
He hurried on. Then, suddenly he stepped into the water. Before he knew what had happened, he dropped down and down. The water was covering his head. He rose to the top of the water, struggling to get back on to the dry sand, surprised. To his horror he saw long grey sharks there in the sea, but where was the sand reef? What had happened to it?
He began to walk back toward the island. While he had searched for shells on the island, the strong ocean waves had washed a large part of the sand reef away. He did not know much about Sharks/but he was a good swimmer. He tried to remember what he had read about sharks. Did sharks find their food by smelling it? If they did, it meant they looked for food at all times, even during the night,
①Most of the night he lay down and looked up at the stars thinking. He thought of the people in the village. He was their doctor, the only doctor in the village felt good to be needed. He thought of wood for a fire, wood to signal for help, but there was no wood. At last he thought of sleep. He slept until the sun rose.
②The sharks were there because the fish were there. The same waves that had washed the sand reef away had somehow pushed large schools of fish into the area. He watched the sharks kill.
He looked at the sea, if he swam to shore, he would be in the water 5,6 minutes. A lot could happen during that time. A wind blew across the water. Small waves rushed across the top and stopped him from seeing the bottom. He hoped the wind would stop. Somehow, clear water seemed less dangerous.
③But first, he looked all around before he took off all his clothes He kept only his belt and his small knife. He silently slipped into the water. He went deep down and looked around. He was about to rise to the top and start swimming when he saw a long grey body below him. He kicked himself up to the top and struggled to the sand.
④ He stood up and looked around again. How could he make the sharks move out to sea? He put the knife against his leg and cut deep into the flesh, blood running out. He caught it on his white shirt. When the shirt was red and wet, he tied some cloths around his leg to stop the flow of blood. He tied a long piece of cloth to the shirt, then he threw the shirt into the water and pulled it with a piece of cloth.
The sharks smelled the blood; they came racing toward the shirt. He was leading then away from shore. Suddenly he dropped the cloth turned toward shore and ran as fast as he could He jumped into the water and swam. He kicked and shouted as loud as he could. He touched the shore with his fingers and pulled himself up the stones.
The shark was excited by the smell of blood and the chase went after him; its great body crushed against the stones. The other sharks jumped on it The end came quickly as the sharks’ blood turned the water red. The injured shark was eaten alive as it tried to escape.
Perry slowly got to his feet. So, he said, “you did not get me.”
He looked down at the sharks still eating even though they were full of food.
1.What happened to the sand reef while John Perry was searching for seashells?
A.It was destroyed by the ocean waves.
B.It was covered by the rising tide of the ocean.
C.It fell down hen sharks were running after fishes around
D.It was washed away by the ocean waves created by the sharks.
2.What made him think he was important to the villagers?
A.His seashells. B.His swimming skill.
C.His bravery. D.His occupation.
3.Why didn't he choose to escape in the night?
A.Darkness made no difference to sharks at all.
B.Darkness would increase the risk of his behavior.
C.Sharks could still see him clearly in the darkness
D.Sharks seldom attacked humans during the daytime.
4.Where should the sentence "He decided to swim." be put in the passage?
