Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their cats are just as used to the warm shelter (住所) as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.
Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you’re cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water.
If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pet’s water. Sometimes owners don’t realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet can’t get anything to drink. Animals that don’t have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.

In a recent study, participants were asked to drink beer from either a straight-sided glass, or a curved “beer glass”. People took about almost twice as long to finish when drinking alcohol from the straight-sided glass, compared with the curved glass. There was no difference in drinking rates from the glasses when the drink was nonalcoholic.
People may drink their alcohol faster from curved glasses because it is more difficult to accurately judge the halfway point of these glasses, the researchers concluded. As a result, drinkers may be less able to measure how much they have consumed. “People often talk of ‘pacing themselves’ when drinking alcohol as a means of controlling levels of drunkenness, but I think the important point to take from our research is that the ability to pace effectively may be compromised when drinking from certain types of glasses,” said study researcher Angela Attwood of the University of Bristol’s School of Experimental Psychology in the United Kingdom.
In another experiment, participants completed a computer task in which they were shown pictures of two glasses containing varying volumes of liquid, and asked to judge whether each glass was more, or less, than half-full. The researchers found people made greater errors in judging the halfway point of the curved glass.
“The participants who showed the greatest error in these judgments also tended to show the greatest changes in their drinking rates,” the researchers said. “The speed at which people drink alcohol influences their level of intoxication (迷醉), and the number of drinks they consume on an occasion. Therefore, slowing down is likely to have a positive impact for the individual, and also at a population level.”
1.If a man finishes drinking alcohol from a curved glass in 30 minutes, from a same-volumed straight glass, he will spend _____.
A. about 15 minutes B. about 60 minutes
C. about 45 minutes D. about 25 minutes
2.According to the passage, the experiment shows that _____.
A. curved glasses mislead people’s judgment
B. people differ greatly when judging the same glass
C. people do computer tasks poorly after drinking
D. the type of liquid influences people’s thinking
3.What advice do the researchers give drinkers?
A. Use a curved “beer glass”.
B. Drink at a slower pace.
C. Drink with positive people.
D. Try different types of alcohol.
4.What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Shape may influence your drinking

It is reported that using a smartphone at mealtimes can lead to an expanding waistline. Researchers have found that men and women consumed 15 percent more calories when looking at their phones while eating. They also ate more fatty food. The groundbreaking study suggests that staring at a phone screen may distract diners from how much food they are actually eating.
"It may prevent the correct understanding of the brain over the amount of food that is eaten," said researchers who filmed 62 volunteers eating alone.
The men and women, aged from 18 to 28, were invited to help themselves to a choice of food 一 ranging from healthy options to soft drinks and chocolates - until they were finally satisfied. In three trials, the volunteers were recorded eating with no distractions, using a smart phone or reading a magazine. According to the study, on average, the volunteers ate 535 calories without the distraction of a smartphone but 591 calories when using a mobile phone instead.
Those in the sample who were classified as overweight ate 616 calories while using their phones. When they were in possession of their mobile phones, the volunteers consumed 10 percent more fatty foods. When reading a magazine, they also ate more compared with no distractions during a meal, but they consume less calories compared with the use of smart phones when having a meal.
"The use of a smart phone during a meal increased calorie and fat intake," said Marcio Gilberto Zangeronimoa, a lead author of the study carried out at the Federal University of Lavras in Brazil and University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands.
He added, "At present, tablets and smart phones have become the main 'distractors' during meals, even early in childhood, and distractors prevent the brain correctly understanding the amount of food ingested, so it is important to pay attention to how this may impact food choices."
1.Which phrase can best replace the underlined word "distract" in the first paragraph?
A.Draw ... to ... B.Give ... out.
C.Bring about... D.Break ... up.
2.According to the study, a lady may consume the least calories during a meal when .
A.eating with no distractions B.eating with a magazine
C.eating with a phone D.eating with a tablet
3.What is Marcio Gilberto Zangeronimoa's attitude to the use of phones during a meal?
A.Favorable. B.Negative. C.Indifferent. D.Surprised.

If ever a drink were invented to satisfy the thirst of social media, this may be it.
With its fantastic name, bright pink and blue twist topped with a pillow of whipped cream, Starbucks’ new Unicom Frappuccino(独角兽星冰乐) practically asks to be posted on social media.
And a glimpse at Twitter shows Unicom Frappuccino is indeed gaining attention.
So what's in it? As Starbucks describes it: “A sweet dusting of pink powder, mixed into a Frappuccino with mango syrup and layered with a pleasantly sour blue drizzle. It is finished with vanilla whipped cream and a sprinkle of sweet pink and sour blue powder topping.”
A look at the ingredients reveals a list less fantastic. The pink powder is actually sugar and "Fruit and Vegetable Color.”
Starbucks advertises the drink “,as rare as a unicorn." But unicorn food is actually a thing. The BBC reports, it's fashionable to post pictures of rainbow colored food which reminds of the fairy tale creature.
Rainbow sushi, anyone?
As for the Unicorn Frappuccino, Lori Aquino said the drink caught her eye on social media. Then people at work were talking about it. “I saw it was coming out today, so I decided to try it,” Aquino said at a Washington D.C. Starbucks. “I'll probably put it on Snapchat or Instagram.”
She bought one to share with her two coworkers.
And the opinion?
“It’s kind of nasty,” Aquino said.
Letitia Winston agreed: "Nope. That will not be something I come looking for."
But Moriam Animashaun was more forgiving. "It's not bad,” she said, “It's just really sweet.”
A 16-ounce medium, or a grande in Starbucks speak, comes in at 410 calories, 59 grams of sugar and 16 grams of fat.
One thing the women agreed on was the drink’s appearance. “It’s pretty," said Animashaun.
“It looks nice," agreed Winston.
And in the age of likes, snaps and tweets, the fantasy image may be all that matters.
The Unicom Frappuccino is available April 19 through April 23 at participating stores in the United Stales, Canada and Mexico.

A survey has shown that what you do on a plane can be determined by which nationality is listed on your passport. According to the results of an international passenger survey, Australians are the biggest drinkers on board with 36 percent choosing to down the hatch, compared to 35 percent of Americans and 33 percent of Brits.
The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) spoke to around 1,500 people aged 18 and older, who have traveled by plane at least once during the last three months and were living in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, China Singapore, Australia and Brazil.
The results found Chinese travelers are most likely to nod off once the seat-belt sign switches off. They are also the first to take out their credit card for some in-flight shopping and the biggest fans of gaming. Americans on the other hand like to use their time in the air more productively—when not drinking—choosing to work while flying at 35,000 feet.
Meanwhile, Brits and Germans are the best at making a chat with random strangers—spending 50 percent more time than any other nationality. Comparatively, Brazilians conduct their conversations online via email, messaging apps or social media.
Despite plane food having a bad reputation, seven out of ten interviewees said they were happy to eat up on the selection of in-flight snacks and meals. In-flight magazines were also popular with four out of five passengers.
The international flyers, who travelled on eight major airlines, did however express their desire for better in-flight entertainment. ''The industry has greatly improved the comfort, entertainment and onboard service, and passengers are accepting those improvements'' said Russell Lemieux, APEX executive director. ''At the same time, passengers are demanding more from their air travel experiences which will drive more improvements touching all aspects of the journey.'' he added.
