Smart waste can
A company called TOWNEW presented; waste can designed for the home that does a lot of the dirty work on its own. When the can is full, the user touches a button to activate the machine's smart abilities. The device then completely closes off the waste bag inside, puts a new one in place, all by itself, and raises its top so the user can pick up and throw away the bag.
Invisible car hood(引擎盖)
Automobile industry company Continental showed off a new technology that seems to make the front end of a vehicle disappear. The technology, called "Transparent Hood," aims to make driving safer and easier. Cameras provide video of the area underneath the vehicle, permitting the driver to see objects and road conditions that might present danger.
Wearable air purifier
A company called Aō Air introduced a wearable air purifier. Designed to be a high-tech face covering to block pollution, the device pulls air through a filtration(过滤)system and then uses fans to create a small area of clean air at its front, allowing the air to be purified-without the need for a solid container.

Many people traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada last week for the 50th Consumer Electronics Show, or CES. The show is said to have the largest collection of new electronic devices in the world.
The show had many examples of “smart home” devices. “Smart home” technology is designed to make life easier for people by letting computers control many things inside our homes. One such device actually begins working outside the home, when someone arrives and rings the doorbell.
“When someone comes to your front door and rings the doorbell, the light can turn on immediately. I get a notification when I’m halfway around the world that someone came, and I can start talking to the person who’s at my front door, and I can say, ‘Oh, here let me let you in,’ I can unlock the door for them very easily.” Said Vivint, a smart home service provider.
One electronics maker launched a device that lets people see and interact with their animals when they are away. The device, from Petcube, lets you remotely watch and talk to your pet through a personal device, according to a company official. It can even give the pet a treat—if you approve and order it.
For heating or cooling, there is a smart thermostat. This device can also send you a message if a big storm causes leaks of flooding. “We’re trying to catch it with just a few drips before it becomes a real big problem,” said Mike Sale of iDevices.
A concern for many homeowners is the possibility that someone else might find a way to attack these smart home devices. An official from Vivint said his company is sure that only owners of the home can gain use of information on the devices. Warren Katz from iDevices said his company employs engineers from the defense industry to help prevent hacking.
1.What can be learned about the show?
A. It created much attraction to consumers.
B. It has been held in Las Vegas many times.
C. It only exhibited smart home devices.
D. It is the largest show ever held.

A. To explain how to answer the door.
B. To illustrate a smart home device.
C. To tell a story about nice devices.
D. To introduce a home service provider.
3.What may happen in the future according to the given examples?
A. Computers may replace human workers one day.
B. A stranger can come into your house even if you’re out.
C. The house can repair for itself if a storm causes damage.
D. You can take good care of your animals while you’re away.
4.What can be inferred about the smart home device from the last paragraph?
A. Information on the devices is easy to get.
B. Many of the devices are not available now.
C. Homeowners are concerned about its operation.
D. Its safety can be guaranteed at present.

With the development of science and technology, new inventions, especially new electronic products, have made people’s lives easy and convenient. But as the saying puts: A coin has two sides.
One day, I was walking in the park with a friend and his cell phone rang, interrupting our conversation. There we were, walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and…I became invisible, absent from the conversation.
The telephone used to connect you to the absent. Now it makes people sitting next to you feel absent. Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communications technology is a tragedy to the closeness of human interaction. With email and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mom has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine.
As almost every contact we can imagine between human beings gets automated, the alienation(疏远) index goes up. You can't even call a person to get the phone number of another person any more. Directory assistance is almost always fully automated.
Pumping petrol at the station? Why say good morning to the attendant when you can swipe(刷)your credit card at the pump and save yourself the bother of human contact?
Making a deposit at the bank? Why talk to a teller who might live in the neighborhood when you can just insert your card into ATM?
Pretty soon you won’t have the burden of making eye contact at the grocery shop. Some supermarket chains are using a self-scanner so you can check yourself out, avoiding those check-out people who look at you and ask how you are doing.
I am not against modern technology. I own a cell phone, an ATM card, a voice mail system, and an email account. Giving them up isn't wise…they're a great help to us. It's some of their possible consequences that make me feel uneasy.
More and more, I find myself hiding behind e-mail to do a job meant for conversation. Or being relieved that voice mail picked up a call because I didn't really have time to talk. The communications industry devoted to helping me keep in touch is making me lonelier.
So I've put myself on technology restriction: no instant messaging, with people who live near me,no cell phoning in the presence of friends, no letting the voice mail pick up when I'm at home.
1.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A. The Advance of Communications Technology
B. The Consequences of Modern Technology
C. The Process of Communications Revolution
D. The Automation of Modern Communications
2. Paragraphs 5 to 7 are listed as examples, which show that the use of modern communications is ___________.
A. encouraging B. disappointing
C. satisfying D. embarrassing
3.The passage implies that _______________.
A. modern technology is bridging the people
B. modern technology is separating the people
C. modern technology is developing too rapidly
D. modern technology is interrupting our lives
4. What does the writer think to do with the modern technology?
A. We may use them no matter what others are doing.
B. We can throw them away and return to the ancient.
C. We can be far away from them forever.
D. We can use them less and communicate with the people around us.

For much of the 20th century, milk was a simple part of daily life in the U.S, as farmers raised cows, milkmen delivered bottles and children drank it at school. But those days are fading.
America has fallen out of love with drinking milk, as lower-calorie options have increased and people are replacing water bottles with milk cartons. Americans each drink an estimated 146 lb. of fluid milk in 2018, according to the USDA’s Economic Research Service. That may sound like a lot, but it’s down by 26% just since 2000.
The downturn has been tough on dairy processors like Borden and Dean, which buy fresh milk from farms and use techniques like pasteurization (巴氏杀菌) to create a consumer-safe drink with a longer shelf life. For the past five years, thanks to technology that increased milk production, fresh-milk prices were relatively low, which meant processors could still earn some money even despite the decreasing demand. But prices began going up again last year, squeezing the processors’ already tight profits. “Declining sales in a thin-profit business is not a good recipe for success,” says Mark Stephenson, director of dairy policy analysis at the University of Wisconsin.
Milk processors are also facing competition from big retailers, which have set up their own processing plants. In 2018, Walmart opened a milk-processing plant in Indiana to serve hundreds of stores in the Midwest, taking away approximately 95 million gal of milk-processing business from Dean Foods.
On the other end of the supply chain, dairy farms are facing trouble of their own. The low prices left small farmers struggling across the industry. The number of farm bankruptcies (破产) in 2019 was up by 4% from the previous year. “We’re trying our best to hang on,” says Mary Rieckmann, a dairy farmer in Wisconsin whose family has turned to GoFundMe to keep their century-old farm running.
1.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Why some dairy farmers turn to GoFundMe.
B.Why America’s milk industry get into much trouble.
C.Why Americans consume less milk than before.
D.Why big retailers set up their own processing plants.
2.It can be inferred from the passage that _________.
A.An American consumes 146 lb fluid milk every year
B.Technology in milk industry improves the production
C.Walmart is probably not a target customer of Dean Foods now
D.2019 witnessed 4% more farm bankruptcies than the previous year
3.In which section of a newspaper may the passage appear?
A.Health B.Technology C.Life D.Economy

Electronic waste, or e-waste, refers to electronic products that are no longer usable. This can include TVs, cell phones and computers and other office electronics, electronic toys and videos machines. Today, the average turnover(更换)rate for a computer in the United States is every two years, according to the environmental group, Greenpeace.
The group's Dai Yun says e-waste is a global problem. "The electronic industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. The high speed of growth in this industry means more and more electronic products are being wasted and thrown away. If no one decides to retrieve the old products and process them properly, the electronic waste will sweep over the earth like the huge wave behind me and pollute the Earth seriously."
Greenpeace works out that 20 to 50 million tons of e-waste are produced globally each year. The components(部件)in many electronic products contain harmful chemicals that pollute ground water and the environment.
At present , the U.S. has no federal law for the disposal (处理) of e-waste although a few states have e-waste recycling programs in place, but there is no law. The U.S. exports much of its e-waste to third world countries, such as India and China, where workers took apart computers for valuable parts, hoping to sell them for money. But harmful wastes expert, Dr. Bakul Rao, says that's a dangerous practice. "From now on, the recyclers are not very educated. All they know is they can retrieve copper or gold out of it. So, the easiest way to do that is leach (过滤) it out in an acid or burn it off to retrieve it. So, that's where they don't know how to deal with it, neither do they have any health systems in place. So, their exposure is more."
1.What does the underlined word "retrieve" (paragraph 2) probably mean?
A.look into | B.take apart | C.get back | D.throw away |

A.The U.S. has strict national laws for dealing with e-waste. |
B.Third world countries import e-waste to get valuable parts, which is a safe and easy way to make money. |
C.The way uneducated workers deal with old computers does great harm to the environment as well as to their own health. |
D.More and more electronic waste is being wasted and thrown away mainly because of people's bad habits. |
3. What is the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To attract more people's attention to e-waste. |
B.To call on people not to throw away e-waste anywhere. |
C.To tell people what e-waste is and how to deal with it well. |
D.To warn people to break away from the electronic industry. |
4.The next paragraph probably concerns ___.
A.how to deal with e-waste properly |
B.how to protect ourselves from harm by e-waste |
C.How to slow down the development in the electronic industry |
D.how to make full use of e-waste |
