Every week in China, millions of people will sit in front of their TVs watching teenagers compete for the title Character Hero, which is a Chinese-style spelling bee (拼写大赛). In this challenge, young competitors must write Chinese characters by hand. To prepare for the competition, the competitors usually spend months studying dictionaries.
Perhaps the show’s popularity should not be a surprise. Along with gunpowder and paper, many Chinese people consider the creation of Chinese calligraphy (书法) to be one of their primary contributions to civilization. Unfortunately, all over the country, Chinese people are forgetting how to write their own language without computerized help. Software on smart phones and computers allows users to type in the basic sound of the word using the Latin alphabet. The correct character is chosen from a list The result? It’s possible to recognize characters without remembering how to write them.
But there’s still hope for the paint brush. China’s Education Ministry wants children to spend more time learning how to write.
In one Beijing primary school we visited, students practice calligraphy every day inside a specially decorated classroom with traditional Chinese paintings hanging on the walls. Soft music plays as a group of six-year-olds dip brush pens into black ink. They look up at the blackboard often to study their teacher’s examples before carefully attempting to reproduce those characters on thin rice paper. “If adults can survive without using handwriting, why bother to teach it now?” we ask the calligraphy teacher, Shen Bin, “The ability to write characters is part of Chinese tradition and culture,” she reasons. “Students must learn now so they don’t forget when they grow up.” says the teacher.
1.What can we learn about the Character Hero? ________
A. It’s the most-viewed TV programs in China.
B. It’s open to people of all ages and all walks.
C. It draws great public attention across the country.
D. It aims to spread Chinese culture to the world.
2.Why are Chinese people forgetting how to write the characters?
A. Chinese people are using the Latin alphabet instead of the characters.
B. Chinese people no longer use brush pens or practice calligraphy.
C. Chinese people needn’t write by hand as often with the help of technology.
D. Chinese people don’t refer to dictionaries very often.
3.According to Shen Bin, being able to write characters by hand is ________.
A. helpful to keep Chinese tradition and culture alive
B. a requirement made by the Education Ministry
C. necessary for adults to survive in China
D. an ability to be developed only when you are students
4.Where does this text probably come from? ________

Jason had been watching the X Games on TV. Athletes from all over the world were competing in the most amazing sports. Just then his grandmother walked into the room. “I want to be extreme. Would you really let me do that? You always worry about my safety!” said Jason.
“You will have to follow some rules,” said his grandmother. “You can only ride in the park — never on the streets. You have to promise to wear a helmet (头盔). If you hurt yourself too much, I have the right to take your skateboard away. Is it a deal?”
“You bet!” Jason was so excited that he jumped off the sofa. A week later he had a board and a helmet.
On Saturday, his grandmother dropped him off near the park. He was happy to have a grandmother who let him try new things.
Kids in the park were moving quickly up and down the ramps (坡道). They flew into the air and landed as easily as birds. When he watched the X games, Jason felt like he was doing the tricks himself. Very slowly he carried his board to the ramp. Taking a deep breath, he put his right foot on the board. He kicked off with his left foot. For a few seconds he glided (滑行) along, just waiting to fall. Then he came to a stop. Kicking off again, he waited for the worst to happen. Again, he stayed up. The third time he kicked, lost his balance, and fell hard on his left knee.
It hurt, but it was no big deal! Why had he been so scared? Now he felt calm because things had gone wrong, and he was fine!

There were many famous poets from different periods of time in Chinese history, and thousands of their poems are still read and appreciated today.
To arouse people’s interest in those classic Chinese poems and promote cultural heritage, China Central Television (CCTV) produced a TV show—Chinese Poetry Competition. The finale (终场) of the hit show’s second season was shown on Feb.7 this year.
Wu Yishu,16,who studies at the High School Affiliated to Fudan University in Shanghai, came out on top. In an earlier episode (一集), Wu wowed the audience when performing in a section entitled “Feihualing”. The game’s theme was “yue”, meaning “moon” or “month” in Chinese. She recited the lines from the Classic of Poetry, the earliest collection of poems in China: “In July, the crickets (蟋蟀) are in the field. In August, they are in the yard. In September, they are at the door. In October, they enter and crawl under our beds.”
“I really admire her knowledge of poems,” said Huang Zijin, 16, a Senior 2 student from Ningbo High School in Zhejiang province, “The first time I saw her wearing traditional Han clothing on TV, I was very impressed by her classical looks. She fulfills all my fantasies for classic Chinese women’s talents. What’s more, she always appears so calm throughout the show, which is very unusual for her age.”
As the old saying goes, “One who is filled with knowledge always behaves with elegance.” “Learning poems isn’t about winning or losing. The power of poetry lies in shaping one’s view of life and developing one’s inner world,” said Li Bo, an expert guest at the Chinese Poetry Competition’s second season.
When it comes to teaching people about poetry, Li Dingguang, the show’s academic advisor, suggested that teachers should explain more about the beauty of the poetry from both the aesthetic (审美的) and emotional sides, and guide the students to lose themselves in the poems’ rhythmic (有节奏的) and rhyming lines.
“Although the amount of ancient Chinese poetry in the textbooks of primary and secondary schools has increased, many students still learn them for exams,” Li Dingguang told China.org.cn. “Therefore, it’s important to help students truly appreciate the artistry and fun of poetry. ”

Uganda is a country in East Africa and,as in many such countries,a high percentage of the population, about 80 percent, are village-dwellers living in huts, which are often no bigger than a garage. The walls of the huts are made of mud, which is held together by reeds and sticks, and the roofs of the older ones are thatched(覆盖)with grass, although an increasing number of newer village houses have roofs made from corrugated(波纹形的)iron.
Several generations of the same family live together in the huts, which are usually divided into two sections by a curtain. The inner section, the one furthest from the open door of the hut,is where everyone sleeps and food is prepared and served in the outer part. If the family owns chickens or goats, they are kept in a small room attached to the main house.
Food is usually prepared on open fires although some people prefer to cook inside. However, this is quite dangerous and also means that the walls of the hut are stained by smoke and the atmosphere is acrid. The family sit in a circle on mats while they eat.
Newer village houses are almost always made of corrugated iron and are bigger, with one or two separate bedrooms and the kitchen in a smaller building beside the main house. But,old or new,the houses are not powered by electricity, and all homes are lit by paraffin(石蜡)candles called “tadobba”.
Nor is there any running water in the houses. Some villages have their own well, but in many cases, collecting water involves a long and arduous walk to a river or spring, carrying plastic containers or pots made of clay.
Children are the ones who have to fetch water, and they have to do this early in the morning before they go to school,or in the evening when they come home. They often have to climb high hills or walk through valleys with narrow paths through dense vegetation. It is no surprise that they grow up muscular and fit after such daily exercise, walking for several kilometres carrying such heavy weights.
