The morning for our snowmobiling (雪上汽车) adventure finally arrived, and we set off on the hour-and-a-half drive to the resort(度假地). A fresh powder had fallen the night before, and everything was frosted white. We couldn’t have asked for more perfect conditions. The sun sparkled on the snow, and the trails (路线) were completely empty – not another person or snowmobile in sight. We were thrilled at being the only people for miles around until we got going.
As we drove through the deserted wilderness, my excitement became stone-cold fear. I had no idea what I was afraid of, or why I was afraid, but suddenly every turn, every hill, every steep (陡峭的) side of the mountain frightened me to death. I kept imagine us crashing headlong into a tree or falling off the side of a drop.
But after lunch things changed. We were the only humans who had been there since the snowfall. The peaceful place, the incredible beauty of the landscape, and the almost sacred experience of sharing a mountain with the wildlife touched my very core (核心). My mind cleared and quieted and my muscles relaxed.
As we drove the last leg of the run, I began to resent being afraid to drive. Deep down, I wanted to be in charge of the thing that scared me. It made me angry that fear was keeping me from something I really wanted to do. The day was coming to an end, and the resort was only a few miles away. I knew that if I didn’t take my chance now, I would regret it.
I signaled for my husband to pull over. I wanted to drive, although my heart pounded (重击). I started off slowly and felt the wind in my face. I smiled and sped up a little. With a “Yee-haw!” I went full out, taking my husband on the best ride of the day.
We ended the day on that breathless, carefree(轻松愉快的)note, and I felt proud of myself – proud of overcoming my fear.

Recently I went to the Tsavo National Park in northern Kenya for a film. We set off early for a distant water hole. A huge elephant, covered with dry mud, drank calmly and deeply. He might have traveled 50 km to reach the water. He wasnˈt going to hurry now. Heˈd drink a while and then rest in the shade, and then drink again—or so we thought. What actually happened was that he drank deeply and stepped away. Then he suddenly fell down. Within minutes he was dead.
We called animal doctor Jeremiah Poghon immediately. He removed the head of a poisoned arrow from the elephantˈs body, and let out over 100 litters of pus(脓)—the result of the elephantˈs meeting with a poacher(偷猎者) months before.
Todayˈs poacher shoots from a blind. He fires an arrow, covered with poison, into the body of an elephant. If the poacher is lucky, the elephant might die in an hour or two; if not, he might have to follow the elephant for days before it dies. Often the arrow head fails to kill the elephant at once—it doesnˈt mean the poison wonˈt finally kill the elephant, but it will be a slow death. Living in Tsavo through these times, I could see the results of poaching from time to time.
When I think about the death of that elephant, what stays with me is the extraordinary silence after the shocking sound of his body hitting the ground. I took some comfort from the knowledge that as the dead body returned to the soil, some animals would benefit—but I couldnˈt escape the feeling that with the death of such a large animal, the world seemed a poorer and emptier place.
1.While filming near the water hole, the author and his team ________.
A. knew the elephant was injured
B. found the elephant acted violently
C. thought the elephant was in good condition
D. tried their best to save the elephant
2.Further examination showed that the dead elephant ________.
A. had wounds all over it
B. had suffered a lot
C. had drunk some deadly water
D. had had a good fight with a poacher
3.Further examination showed that the dead elephant ________.
A. Embarrassed.
B. Funny
C. Relieved
D. Upset
4.Why did the author write the text?
A. To introduce African elephant.
B. To ask readers to protect wild animals.
C. To describe his filming experience.
D. To show the cruelty of poaching.

At just 17, McGarry is a rising star of the food world and has been dubbed(……取别名) the “Justin Bieber” of American cooking.
Flynn McGarry's cooking career started when he was 11, partly thanks to his mother. “My mom didn't really like cooking, and when she did cook, I didn't really like her food. I was watching something on the Food Network channel and I thought, ‘I could do this,’ so I went to the bookstore and looked for the biggest cookbook I could find.”
Within a year, he had produced most of its recipes(菜谱) and was ready for a bigger challenge. He said, “I wanted to create my own dishes and I started to cook for more people than just my family too.” His parents allowed him to build a test kitchen in his bedroom. “At first, they were fine with it, but then they asked if I wanted to sleep next to a stove(火炉) and I said yes ! It started off as two tables with some gas burners, my desk and my bed, but then I needed more space for cooking,so I gave up the desk and got a foldaway bed(折叠床).” Then Flynn'S older sister, whose bedroom had more space, went off to college. He moved down to her room and fitted it with a large stove, four work stations, and a long area for preparing the end results on plates.
Flynn and his mother set up Eureka, a supper club pop-up business that organizes monthly events inside his room. Flynn, who has also cooked in top-class restaurants around the US, says he’s not doing it for the money, but because he loves cooking. “At the point in your life where you stop caring if you,re going to be famous or do well, your dream will come to you.
