The Israeli farmers who pioneered the revolutionary technology known as drip irrigation(滴流灌溉) weren’t trying to solve one of the world’s most urgent problems. They were just trying to survive. They lived in the desert, and they didn’t have enough water to grow their crops.
In its simplest form, it was little more than a pipe with holes in it. But behind each hole was a hi-tech dripper that let out just the right amount of water. Snaked along a row of crops so that the holes were positioned directly above the roots, the pipe could direct each precious drop of water directly to the plants, getting a bigger harvest while using a very small amount of water.
Over time, the farmers improved upon the technology, perfecting the drippers that regulated the flow of water, and connecting the pipelines to computers that could determine exactly how much water each plant needed and when.
If the global population kept growing, the rest of the world would increasingly resemble their little community in the desert. So they began selling their irrigation systems in other parts of the world, eventually expanding to more than 110 countries. Netafirm, the company says it’s lifting people out of poverty and conserving water at a time when the importance of doing so has never been clearer.
The mass adoption of drip irrigation won’t save the world by itself. To avoid the coming catastrophe, nearly everybody will, in some way, have to do more with less, perhaps through accepting and using other new technologies. Otherwise, it’s going to get ugly.
1.Why is drip irrigation called “the revolutionary technology”?
A.It saves the world all by itself.
B.It is controlled by computers.
C.It makes irrigation more effective.
D.It provides deserts with water.
2.What does “one of the world’s most urgent problems” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Lacking water. B.Lacking labor.
C.Lacking food. D.Lacking energy.
3.How does the drip irrigation help farmers with crops?
A.By drilling holes on the pipes.
B.By regulating water via drippers.
C.By snaking pipes along the crops.
D.By placing pipes just above roots.
4.Which of the following will be the best slogan for Netafirm to sell the irrigation systems?
A.Less water; More harvest.
B.New technology; New world.
C.More grain; Less starvation.
D.Water saving; World surviving.

Farmers might think the idea of growing food for fun sounds strange. But there are some people who do it all the time. They grow some vegetables because their natural color or shape is pleasing to see. They grow others because scientists have developed new colors or different sizes for traditional vegetables.
One example is the bell pepper. Seed companies sell seeds for several different kinds of bell peppers. One pepper is a weak yellow color when it begins to grow. Then its color changes to white. As it grows, it changes color two more times ﹣ to orange, then red. If you are not interested in peppers that change colors as they grow, you can grow some that remain on color. Each kind of pepper has its own special taste.
Another unusual plant is known as the yard﹣long bean or snake bean. It grows up to one meter in length. It is an important part of the food supply in areas of Asia. American farmers like it because it is different, yet tastes very much like the green beans they traditionally grow. Each bean has from ten to twenty seeds. The outside or pod can be eaten. Some of the very long beans are green outside but have black﹣and﹣white or red seeds.
Gourds (葫芦) are plants that people like to grow because of their many different shapes. They also have many uses. Some round gourds are dried, painted and made into containers. Others have long necks and big bodies. These are dried, cut and made into containers to pour drinking water.

James Bender, in his book How to Talk Well tells the story of a farmer who grew awardwinning corn. Each year he won a blue ribbon. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it.
The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors.“How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?” The reporter asked.“Why,” said the farmer, “didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen(花粉) from the ripening corn and carries it from field to field. If my neighbors grow bad corn, crosspollination(异花受粉) will slowly reduce the quality of my corn.If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn.”
He is very much aware of the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbors' corn also improves. The lesson for each of us is this: If we are to grow good corn, we must help our neighbors grow good corn.

An Israeli law banning too skinny models went into effect with the start of 2013. The law, approved last March in Israel, requires models to prove they have maintained a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 18.5 for three months before a fashion show. That means a woman who is 68 inches tall can weigh no less than 119 pounds.
“This law is another step in the war against eating disorders,” said physician Adatto. “Underweight models,” he explained, “can no longer serve as role models for innocent young people who copy their false image of being skinny.”
But some critics in this country say it is misguided, focusing on weight instead of health. They also say the Israeli ban is bound to fail because of the strong power of the fashion industry. “I think it’s an approach that isn’t going to work.” said eating disorder expert Susan Ice, who worked with an organization which creates a healthy working environment for models.
But Adatto told the reporter that he began to concern the issue after meeting an ambitious model who looked like she needed to be hospitalized. He said. “I realized that only legislation(立法) can change the situation. There was no time to waste; so many girls were dieting to death.”
However, the efforts to regulate models’ weight in Spain and Italy have not resulted in significant changes in part because of difficulties in determining reliable methods of measuring weight and health.
Still, folks including Ice say there’s no denying that images from Hollywood and the fashion industry can be difficult for young women to deal with. “Certainly I don't believe the modeling industry has caused the rise in eating disorders, but it makes it harder,” she says. “It’s a difficult recovery environment, worshiping thinness as the beauty ideal.”
1. One benefit the new Israeli law may bring is ________.
A. to change the working conditions of models
B. to prevent models from suffering from eating disorders
C. to provide guidance for women worshiping thinness
D. to lower the chance of skinny models’ death
2.In the opinion of the critics, the law won’t succeed because .
A. it misleads young women to form a bad eating habit.
B. the fashion industry is much too influential.
C. it doesn’t create a healthy working environment for models.
D. it doesn’t provide a proper approach that can work well.
3. What caused Adatto to think that a law was needed to change the situation?
A. Being interviewed by a reporter.
B. Establishing his fashion model agent.
C. Meeting an ambitious but too skinny model.
D. Seeing a model die from eating disorders.
4.According to the passage, the new Israeli law banning skinny models is .
A. practical B. reasonable

I read a newspaper article about a new concept. The idea is simple, but revolutionary: combining a residential home for the elderly with a nursery school in the same building. The children and the residents (住户) eat lunch together and share activities such as music, painting and gardening. In the afternoons, the residents enjoy reading stories to the children and, if a child is feeling sad or tired, there is always a kind lap to sit on and a hug.
Nowadays there is less and less contact between the old and the young. There are many reasons for this, including the breakdown of the extended family, working parents with no time to care for aging relations, and smaller flats with no room for grandparents. But the result is the same: increasing numbers of children without grandparents and old people who have no contact with children. It’s a major problem in many societies.
That’s why inter-generation (代际的) programs are growing in popularity all over the world. There are examples of successful actions. Using young people to teach IT skills to older people is one obvious example. Using old people as volunteer assistants in schools is another. One successful scheme in London pairs young volunteers with old people who are losing their sight. The young people help with practical things such as writing letters, reading bank statements and helping with shopping, and the older people can pass on their knowledge and experience to their young visitors. For example, a retired judge may be paired with a teenager who wants to study law.
But it isn’t only the individuals concerned who gain from inter-generational activities. The advantages to society are huge too. If older people can understand and accept the youth of today, there will be less conflict in a community. And we can use the strengths of one generation to help another. Then perhaps getting old won’t be so sad after all.
1.Why does the author mention the newspaper article he read?
A. To argue for a new concept. B. To introduce the topic of the text.
C. To show his interest in the topic. D. To draw our attention to a social problem.
2.What is the purpose of the inter-generational programs?
A. To ask the old to care for the young.
B. To teach the young to respect the old.
C. To bring the old and the young together.
D. To provide a good job opportunity for the young.
3.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The examples of inter-generational activities.
B. The inter-generational programs all over the world.
C. The inter-generational programs’ benefits to individuals.
D. The reasons why inter-generational programs enjoy popularity.
4.What may be the best title for the text?
A. Being old is no more sad.
B. Offer a warm home for the young.
C. A new concept in caring for the old is born.
D. Build bridges between the old and the young.

Thomas, the pioneering White House reporter known for putting presidents on the hot seat, died at 92.
To those who regularly watch presidential press conferences, Helen Thomas is a familiar figure. Usually dressed in red and always seated in the front row, she is always the first or second reporter the president calls upon. It is an honour she has earned. Besides, it affords her the perfect opportunity to do what she does best—challenge the president and other public officials to tell the plain truth. She said, “ We reporters’ priority(首要事情) is the people’s right to know---without fear or favor. We are the people’s servants.”
Helen Thomas was born in Kentucky in 1920. All the nine Thomas' children were brought up to value education, and all were expected to make something of themselves through working hard. A woman in the US is able to speak for the first time in 11 years after a pioneering voice box transplant.
Brenda Jensen said the operation was a great success which had saved her life. Thirteen days after the surgery she said her first words: “Good morning, I want to go ” home. ”It is the first time a voice box and windpipe have been transplanted at the same time and only the second time a voice box has ever been transplanted.
Ms. Jensen,52,had been unable to speak on her own since her voice box was damaged during surgery (手术) in 1999. Since then, she has been unable to taste or smell food, could breathe only through a hole in her windpipe and could talk only with the help of an electronic voice box.
In October, doctors at the University of California Davis Medical Centre removed the voice box and 6cm of the windpipe from a donor body. In an 18一hour surgery, this was transplanted into Ms. Jensen's throat and the team connected it to her blood supply and nerves(神经).
Professor Martin Birchall from University College London, who was part of the surgery team, said:”We've learned that we can repair nerves to make even very complex organs function again. It'll open the door to better facial transplants and will be extremely important as tissue (组织) engineering develops. ”
A voice box transplant might be life changing, but it is not life saving. Everyone who receives a transplant must take drugs to control the immune system (免疫系统) for the rest of their lives. These drugs can reduce life expectancy,so they are normally set aside for life saving procedures.
One of the reasons Ms. Jensen was a suitable person for this transplant was that she was already taking immune controlling drugs after a kidney-pancreas transplant four years ago. Professor Peter Belafsky, part of the surgical team, said:“Brenda was an exceptional candidate for the transplant because she was highly motivated. Anyone who's met Brenda knows that she is a strong and determined person with a great attitude towards life in spite of the many physical challenges she's faced over her lifetime. ”
1.The voice transplant surgery is of great importance because it proves that _______.
A. facial transplants are now easier to perform
B. new medical technology is always possible to discover
C. nerve repairing is a breakthrough in tissue engineering
D. the drugs taken after the surgery help the patient live longer
2.Ms. Jensen was a suitable person for this transplant because she was ________.
A. strong—willed and prepared B. experienced and brave
C. seriously ill and motivated D. determined and realistic
3.Which of the following is the fight time order of the event?
a. Ms. Jensen received a voice box transplant operation.
b. Ms. Jensen began to take immune controlling drugs.
c. Doctors removed the voice box from a donor body.
