Perhaps the most challenging material you read at school is poetry. Though the message of some poems may be very simple, the way poets put words together often makes this message elusive. When you read a poem, you should begin by trying to understand what the poet is saying on the surface, then examine the way the poet expresses this content, and finally decide how the poem's meaning is created. Here are some steps to read a poem.
First, read the poem once slowly aloud without writing or marking anything. Don't stop until you finish the poem, even if you don't know the meaning or pronunciation of a word. When you've finished, think it over for a moment on any words, images, and characters that caught your attention. Then read the poem again silently. When you come to a word you don't know, look it up in the dictionary.
Understand the meaning of figurative (比喻的)language. Figurative language doesn't mean exactly what it says; instead, it suggests meanings. For example, in the line “Love, all alike, no season knows”, the poet doesn't mean love is unfamiliar with four seasons. Love cannot know anything at all; only people can know something. Thus, the poet is personifying(拟人化) love, giving it human qualities.
Examine and think about the poet's use of language. Why, for example, did the poet choose to compare his love to a red rose instead of a tree or a bird? We can use associations: we usually associate roses with beauty and love, but we also know a rose bush has thorns (刺). All of these associations may not be right for a particular poem, but many of them probably will.
Finally, read the poem one more time aloud.Practice using pauses and stress to make the poem's meaning come alive.
1.The underlined word “elusive” in Paragraph 1 probably means “________”.
A.easy B. interesting
C.difficult D. boring

A.The form of the poem.
B.The content of the poem.
C.The meaning of the poem.

Reading is the key to success in all school subjects. With a bit of creativity, you can help your child enjoy reading more, and encourage him to do more!
Buy or borrow a lot of “fun” books. Choose books that are slightly below his level of reading ability. Don’t forget what your child likes to do when choosing books for him. Don’t comment about the books. Simply leave the books lying on the table where your child is sure to see them. Computer games are not as harmful as most parents usually think them to be. Instead, you should take advantage of your child’s love of computer games to purchase those that require a lot of reading and avoid those that are simply computerized video games.
Buy your child a bedside reading lamp, or a tiny book light. Tell him that from now on, he must be in bed by a specific time (say 8:30) and that he can either sleep or read. Most kids will do anything else rather than go to sleep, so there’s a chance you’ll create a new bedtime reading habit.
Many children will read when they are sitting alone having a snack, or when they have a few minutes of unplanned free time. Put a box of books and magazines near the kitchen table so that reading material is accessible.
Often, once children learn to read independently, parents stop reading to them. This change of routine causes great sadness to a child who has come to love falling asleep as you read. Even a teenager will enjoy being read to if you pick books that interest him. Select books together, and make sure they’re ones you enjoy as well, so your enjoyment will come through as you read to them.
1.In order to make children become interested in reading, what should parents do?
A. Tell them what they can learn from these books.
B. Choose books based on their interest.
C. Choose the easiest books for them to read.
D. Always read books together with them.
2.Which of the following is NOT what parents are advised to do?
A. Reduce children’s sleeping time.
B. Read to children when possible.
C. Have reading material available.
D. Pick the right computer games.
3.What attitude do most parents hold towards children playing computer games?
A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Neutral. D. Doubtful.
4.What’s the main purpose of the passage?
A. To help children succeed in school subjects.
B. To give parents advice on how to educate children.
C. To remind parents of the importance of reading.
D. To teach parents how to encourage children to read.

Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is perhaps the most famous portrait in the world, but now some suspect that the woman with the mysterious smile may not be a woman after all. They are suggesting that the Mona Lisa may be a self-portrait, da Vinci in drag (女装).
Italy’s National Committee for Cultural Heritage (INCCH) is carrying out the research. They think the artist, who died in 1519, was buried at a French castle and they plan to dig up his body. Using CSI-style technology, they want to rebuild da Vinci’s face. Jason Rosenfeld, a member of INCCH, says, “ It shows the reason why we preserved Einstein’s brain or King Tut’s mummy (木乃伊), which throws light on the problem we are working on.”
“Now we want to get the body of Leonardo. We want to see what he died of, we want to see his DNA, we want to see the size of his head, and what his facial feature were like, so we can know whether this was a self-portrait.”
The Mona Lisa was painted around 500 years ago. Beyond that, we know almost nothing about the painting that is now on display at the Louvre in Paris.
But will the exhumation (发掘) discover the truth behind the Mona Lisa? Not likely, according to Rosenfeld. “If the French government really wants to help find out what this is about, what they should do is allow us to clean the Mona Lisa. We will learn much more from it and understand it better if we are allowed to clean the painting than by digging up a body.”
1.What can be learnt from the text?
A. The French government will be in charge of digging up da Vinci’s body.
B. The INCCH will learn more if allowed to clean the Mona Lisa painting.
C. The exhumation will help uncover the truth behind the Mona Lisa.
D. The French government wants to help find out the truth.
2.Which of the following is TRUE about the Mona Lisa?
A. It is now preserved in France.
B. It is a self-portrait of da Vinci in drag.
C. It has the same long history as King Tut’s mummy.
D. It was painted in 1519.
3.What’s the question that the INCCH is researching on?
A. What da Vinci died of.
B. Whether da Vinci liked dressing in drag.
C. Whether the Mona Lisa was painted by da Vinci.
D. Whether the Mona Lisa is da Vinci’s self-portrait.
4.What the underlined phrase, “ throws light on”, in the second paragraph mean?
A. Pays attention to.
B. Makes people feel confident.
C. Makes it possible for people to know.
D. Draws people’s attention.
